Assessing the relationship between the distress levels in patients with irreversible terminal delirium and the good quality of death from the perspective of bereaved family.

BACKGROUND: Research on achieving a good death for terminally delirious patients is scarce, with limited knowledge about the level of good death and influencing factors. This study investigates the level of good death among delirium patients, factors influencing it, and the correlation between distress, end-of-life care needs, and achieving a good death by surveying bereaved family members of deceased patients in Chinese hospitals. METHODS: This cross-sectional study from January 2022 to January 2024 was conducted among bereaved family members of patients using an online questionnaire. The qu

Are cancer patients living alone more or less likely to achieve a good death? Two cross-sectional surveys of bereaved families.

This study examined differences in sociodemographic characteristics and the achievement of a good death between cancer patients who live alone and those who do not live alone prior to death in different settings. Secondary analysis of data collected across two cross-sectional self-reported questionnaire surveys was undertaken. The participants were bereaved family members of cancer patients who had died in palliative care units (PCUs), acute hospitals or homes. We stratified the data by the place of death and examined the differences in sociodemographic characteristics to determine the relatio

Internet-based grief therapy for bereaved individuals after loss due to Haematological cancer: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of the individuals experiencing the death of a loved one develop prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after bereavement. Family members of haematological cancer patients might be particularly burdened since their loss experience is preceded by a very strenuous time of disease and aggressive treatment. However, support needs of relatives of cancer patients often remain unmet, also after the death of the patient. Therapeutic possibilities are enhanced by providing easily available and accessible Internet-based therapies. This study will adapt and evaluate an Internet-base…

Thriving without driving: Exploring the impact of a driving retirement intervention on older adults through a dual process model of coping with bereavement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Driving retirement is an increasingly significant life transition for older adults, yet few plan for this change despite its emotional, practical, and social implications. Older adults commonly experience mobility challenges, diminished well-being, and strong negative emotions-including grief, frustration, and loss of identity-when they stop driving. The dual process model of coping with bereavement offers a useful framework for understanding this transition, as it distinguishes between loss-oriented stressors (emotional reactions to giving up driving) and restoratio…

What is known about the health service use and follow-up of immediate family members bereaved by suicide? Scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide remains a major public health issue around the world. People bereaved by suicide are a vulnerable group who are at considerable risk of developing mental and physical health problems, such as complicated grief, post-traumatic stress disorder or cardiovascular disease. Many unanswered questions remain, in particular, in terms of their use of healthcare services. This protocol describes how we aim to systematically scope the existing literature on the professional follow-up and health service use by families bereaved by suicide. The scoping review will help to identify rese

Eighteen months after the Sewol ferry disaster, 107 subjects who experienced traumatic losses as a result of the accident completed a mental and medical survey as well as laboratory tests for lipid profiles. At 30 months after the trauma, a total of 64 individuals completed a follow-up psychometric survey and biochemical measurements. The contributions of family care-givers at end of life: A national post-bereavement census survey of cancer carers' hours of care and expenditures.

BackgroundFamily members provide vital care at end of life, enabling patients to remain at home. Such informal care contributes significantly to the economy while supporting patients' preferences and government policy. However, the value of care-givers' contributions is often underestimated or overlooked in evaluations. Without information on the activities and expenditures involved in informal care-giving, it is impossible to provide an accurate assessment of carers' contribution to end-of-life care.AimThe aim of this study was to investigate the contributions and expenditure of informal, fam

'A short time but a lovely little short time': Bereaved parents' experiences of having a child with spinal muscular atrophy type 1.

AIM: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 is a relatively common, untreatable and invariably fatal neuromuscular disorder of early childhood. Psychosocial care is vital in management of families affected by this disease. There are few studies examining the impact of having a family member with a neuromuscular disorder, and none describing parents' experiences of having a child with SMA type 1. This study explored parents' perspectives of having a child with SMA type 1, from diagnosis to bereavement, in order to inform clinical practice by identifying aspects most meaningful to parents and to a…
