[Sudden death and obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy].

Sudden death is the most common cause of death in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathies. Ventricular arrhythmias appear to be involved most frequently. The typical clinical picture is that of a young, asymptomatic male subject with a family history of sudden death and obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The electrocardiogram at rest, the left ventricular pressure gradient, and the width of the septum are not good predictive criteria. Holter monitoring with the discovery of a run of ventricular tachycardia is the only method which identifies a subgroup at high risk for sudden death. Tr

Autonomic dysfunction and vasoregulation in long COVID-19 are linked to anti-GPCR autoantibodies.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-triggered autoantibodies (AABs) targeting G protein-coupled receptors have been suggested to contribute to the post-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (or post-COVID-19 syndrome [PCS]). OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize AABs involved in autonomic dysfunction such as rhythm control and vasoregulation in patients with PCS and profile the peripheral B- and T-cell receptor (BCR/TCR) architecture to identify immunogenetic imprints of autoimmunity. METHODS: Anti-G protein-coupled receptor AABs were characterized in patients wit

Temporal Alpha Dissimilarity of ADHD Brain Network in Comparison With CPT and CATA.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurological and psychiatric disorder that affects children during their development. To find neural patterns for ADHD and provide subjective features as decision references to assist specialists and physicians. Many studies have been devoted to investigating the neural dynamics of the brain through resting-state or continuous performance tests (CPT) with EEG or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The present study used coherence, which is one of the functional connectivity (FC) methods, to analyze the neural patterns of ch

Effects of left atrial compliance on left atrial pressure in pure mitral stenosis.

In mitral stenosis (MS), left atrial (LA) pressure is commonly elevated because of increased LA afterload. There is a wide spectrum of LA pressure in patients with MS, however, despite a similar mitral valve orifice area. LA compliance is an important determinant of both cardiovascular performance and pathological physiology. Few data are available, however, regarding the effects of LA compliance on LA pressure. We hypothesized that LA pressure may be higher in patients with decreased LA compliance. We analyzed the right heart and transseptal catheterization data in 47 patients (41 female, mea

Emotional expressions modulate low α and β oscillations in a cortically blind patient.

Studies of cortical blindness have suggested that some residual visual function may persist without perceptual awareness, a condition known as blindsight. To investigate electrophysiological evidence of unconscious processing of emotional stimuli, we examined the event-related oscillations (EROs) in a 62year-old male patient (TN) with affective blindsight during random stimulation of three facial expressions (fearful, happy and neutral). Spectral power analysis in response to the different emotions revealed significant differences between fearful and happy faces over the right frontal regions

[The EEG of patients with tetralogy of Fallot with and without hypoxemic seizures].

Electroencephalograms were recorded of 135 children with TOF. They were normal in 51%, slightly disturbed in one-third, and severe disorders were seen in 16% of patients. Although not statistically significant, cyanotic spells tend to be associated with more severe impairment of the bioelectrical brain function. As far as patients develop additional neurological complications, these result in severe electro-encephalographic changes. Thus, electroencephalographic findings suggest early corrective surgery.

Influence of Different Lactation Stages on Circadian Rhythmicity of Metabolic Biomarkers in Dairy Cows: A Pilot Study.

Currently, subclinical metabolic imbalances at the individual cow and herd level are detected by measuring biomarkers in single blood samples. However, diurnal variations have not been fully described yet but need to be considered when sampling for a robust ad consistent analysis. The study describes the influence of lactation phases on circadian rhythms and diurnal variations for non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), total bilirubin (tBIL) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in dairy cows. In an observational pilot study, we used 16 clinically healthy Simmental dairy

Bimodal circadian secretion of melatonin from the pineal gland in a living CBA mouse.

Circadian melatonin secretion is the best-known output signal from the circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus that indicates internal conditions of the body. We have established a system that enables long-term monitoring of melatonin secretion by implanting a transverse microdialysis probe in or near the pineal gland in a freely moving mouse. This in vivo method enabled continuous measurement of melatonin secretion over a period of >20 days in individual CBA mice, with simultaneous recording of the locomotor activity. Pineal melatonin secretion was completely matched to the circadi

Dysregulation of the molecular clock by blood-borne factors in Alzheimer's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Circadian disruptions are increasingly recognized in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and may influence disease onset and progression. This study examines how AD pathology affects blood-borne factors that regulate circadian rhythms. METHODS: Eighty-five participants from the Sino Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Decline were enrolled: 35 amyloid-beta negative normal controls (Aβ- NCs), 23 amyloid-beta positive normal controls (Aβ+ NCs), 15 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and 12 with Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). Patients with aMCI and ADD were groupe

Activity Tracker-Based Metrics as Digital Markers of Cardiometabolic Health in Working Adults: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Greater adoption of wearable devices with multiple sensors may enhance personalized health monitoring, facilitate early detection of some diseases, and further scale up population health screening. However, few studies have explored the utility of data from wearable fitness trackers in cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk prediction. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between a range of activity metrics derived from a wearable consumer-grade fitness tracker and major modifiable biomarkers of cardiometabolic disease in a working-age population. Top-down signal transmission and global hyperconnectivity in auditory-visual synesthesia: Evidence from a functional EEG resting-state study.

Auditory-visual (AV) synesthesia is a rare phenomenon in which an auditory stimulus induces a "concurrent" color sensation. Current neurophysiological models of synesthesia mainly hypothesize "hyperconnected" and "hyperactivated" brains, but differ in the directionality of signal transmission. The two-stage model proposes bottom-up signal transmission from inducer- to concurrent- to higher-order brain areas, whereas the disinhibited feedback model postulates top-down signal transmission from inducer- to higher-order- to concurrent brain areas. To test the different models of synesthesia, we es

Evaluation of Cognitive Function When Hearing One's Own Name in Patients With Brain Injuries in Early Developmental Stages.

PURPOSE: The level of residual cognitive function in patients with early brain injury is a key factor limiting rehabilitation and the quality of life. Although understanding residual function is necessary for appropriate rehabilitation, the extent of its effects on cognitive improvement remains unknown. This study evaluated cognitive function in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities after early brain injuries due to cerebral hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia. We focused on neural responses to hearing the subject's own name (SON). According to previous studies, diffe

Synchronization of fronto-parietal beta and theta networks as a signature of visual awareness in neglect.

In the neglect syndrome, the perceptual deficit for contra-lesional hemi-space is increasingly viewed as a dysfunction of fronto-parietal cortical networks, the disruption of which has been described in neuroanatomical and hemodynamic studies. Here we exploit the superior temporal resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) to study dynamic transient connectivity of fronto-parietal circuits at early stages of visual perception in neglect. As reflected by inter-regional phase synchronization in a full-field attention task, two functionally distinct fronto-parietal networks, in beta (15-25Hz) and

Central neural mechanisms of interindividual difference in discomfort during sensorimotor incongruence in healthy volunteers: an experimental study.

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that disturbance in sensory and motor function may induce sensorimotor incongruence and produce pain, discomfort and other sensations in healthy volunteers. One study suggested that sensorimotor incongruent information to healthy subjects results in increased neuronal activity in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex; however, this study did not take into consideration the discomfort induced by sensorimotor incongruence. The present study attempted to characterize intracortical electrical activities for sensorimotor incongruence

Enhanced biological motion perception in deaf native signers.

We conducted two studies to test how deaf signed language users perceive biological motions. We created 18 Biological Motion point-light displays (PLDs) depicting everyday human actions, and 18 Scrambled control PLDs. First, we conducted an online behavioral rating survey, in which deaf and hearing raters identified the biological motion PLDs and rated how easy it was for them to identify the actions. Then, we conducted an EEG study in which Deaf Signers and Hearing Non-Signers watched both the Biological Motion PLDs and the Scrambled PLDs, and we computed the time-frequency responses within t

Reduced firing rates of pyramidal cells in the frontal cortex of APP/PS1 can be restored by acute treatment with levetiracetam.

In recent years, aberrant neural oscillations in various cortical areas have emerged as a common physiological hallmark across mouse models … ely firing pyramidal cells phase-lock their spiking activity more strongly to the ongoing theta and beta rhythms. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the antiepileptic drug, levetiracetam, counteracts these effects by increasing pyramidal cell firing rates in APP/PS1 mice and uncoupling pyramidal cells and interneurons. Overall, our results highlight reduced fi …

[Arrhythmias in pregnancy. How and when to treat?].

Cardiac arrhythmias can develop during pregnancy. The risk of arrhythmias is relatively higher during labor and delivery. Potential factors that can promote arrhythmias in pregnancy or during labor and delivery, include the direct cardiac electrophysiological effects of hormones, changes in autonomic tone, hemodynamic perturbations, hypokalemia, and underlying heart disease. In this review, the basis for treatment of supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias are described. No drug therapy is usually needed for the management of supraventricular or ventricular premature beats, but potential

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Effectiveness of Intravenous Magnesium Sulphate in the Treatment of Acute Fast Atrial Fibrillation in Non-surgical Adult Patients.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder in the elderly, and it contributes significantly to patient morbidity and mortality. A variety of medications, including amiodarone, beta-blockers, and calcium channel blockers, are commonly used to manage AF. Often, intravenous magnesium (IV Mg) is used as an adjunctive therapy for rate and rhythm control; however, its efficacy in managing fast AF has been controversial, with previous meta-analyses yielding conflicting results. This meta-analysis sought to establish the effectiveness of IV Mg in the treatment of fast AF by inco
