Association Between Artificially Sweetened Beverage Consumption During Pregnancy and Infant Body Mass Index.

IMPORTANCE: The consumption of artificial sweeteners has increased substantially in recent decades, including among pregnant women. Animal studies suggest that exposure to artificial sweeteners in utero may predispose offspring to develop obesity; however, to our knowledge, this has never been studied in humans. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether maternal consumption of artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy is associated with infant body mass index (BMI [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared]). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study incl…

Sugar-sweetened beverage intake in relation to semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in young men.

STUDY QUESTION: Is consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) associated with semen quality? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher consumption of SSB was associated with lower sperm motility among healthy, young men. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The existing literature on the potential role of SSBs on male reproductive function is scarce and primarily focused on the relation between caffeinated beverages and semen quality. However, a rodent model suggests that SSBs may hamper male fertility. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: The Rochester Young Men's Study; a cross-sectional study of 189 healthy young men carri…

On-demand, thermally triggered burst release of essential oils via native complex coacervate-stabilized emulsion gels in instant beverages.

The application of grapefruit essential oil (GEO) in acidic, high-sugar syrups is hindered by the release paradox: the need for structural confinement during storage versus rapid aroma liberation upon consumption. This study developed a marine-derived liquid encapsulation platform using fish gelatin-fucoidan complex coacervates (COA). Optimized at pH 3.3, the COA formed robust interfacial multilayers, achieving 96.1% encapsulation efficiency at 60% GEO content. Unlike conventional powders, GEO-COA maintained homogeneous dispersion and structural integrity, suppressing GEO release to <10.3% ove

Evaluation of tensile strength and knot security of commonly used sutures in commonly consumed beverages, an in-vitro study.

Suture selection significantly impacts surgical outcomes, with tensile strength and knot security being critical factors. This study investigated the influence of suture material and environmental factors on these parameters. We compared four suture types: polyglactin 910 (PG), polypropylene (PP), silk (SK) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Tensile strength was assessed initially and during two weeks of immersion in various media (saliva, tea, coffee and cola). Knot security, specifically knot slippage and breakage, was evaluated across the different suture materials and media. Prolene displ

Influence of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the compressive strength of core build-up bulk-fill resin materials.

BACKGROUND: In the oral cavity, restorations and teeth are subject to occlusal stresses, as well as physiological and chemical wear processes. The consumption of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is popular among adolescents, and this habit often persists into adulthood, contributing to tooth erosion. The erosive potential of these beverages is influenced by various factors, including the pH, acid type, buffer capacity, adhesion, chelating effect, and phosphate or calcium or fluoride content of the drink. Several studies have confirmed that the excessive consumption of alcoholic and non-al…
