Cumulative Adverse Childhood Experiences and Frequency of Substance Use Among US High School Students.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have lasting effects into adulthood. This study examines the relationship between ACEs and the frequency of substance use among high school students in the United States. Data were drawn from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative survey of high school students. A cumulative ACE score was calculated based on 8 self-reported lifetime experiences. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between cumulative ACEs and substance use (alcohol, binge drinking, cannabis, and e-cigarettes). A significan…

Substance Use Among African American College Students: Testing the Theory of African American Offending.

BACKGROUND: General criminological theories contend that African Americans' substance use is due to overexposure to criminological risk fact … tudents who reported marijuana use had less confidence in the police and those who engaged in heavy/binge drinking reported more negative emotions and negative encounters with the police. Additionally, negative police encounters and racial socialization practices increased the odds of heavy/binge drinking, whereas religiosity decreased the odds of heavy/binge dr …

A new method of prenatal alcohol classification accounting for dose, pattern and timing of exposure: improving our ability to examine fetal effects from low to moderate alcohol.

BACKGROUND: When examining the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal effects, the timing and intensity of exposure have been ignored in epidemiological studies. The effect of using dose, pattern and timing of consumption ("composite" method) was investigated in this study, to examine the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal effects. METHODS: The composite method resulted in six categories of exposure (abstinent, low, moderate, binge <weekly, binge 1-2×/week and heavy). The odds of language delay and child behaviour problems were calculated for the composit

Single ethanol binge causes severe liver injury in mice fed Western diet.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and NAFLD often coexist in Western societies that consume energy-rich and cholesterol-containing Western diets. Increased rates of ALD mortality in young people in these societies are likely attributable to binge drinking. It is largely unknown how alcohol binge causes liver damage in the setting of Western diets. APPROACH AND RESULTS: In this study, we showed that a single ethanol binge (5 g/kg body weight) induced severe liver injury as shown by marked increases in serum activities of the 2 aminotransferases AST and ALT in C57BL/6J…

A mouse model of binge alcohol consumption and Burkholderia infection.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking, an increasingly common form of alcohol consumption, is associated with increased mortality and morbidity; yet, its effects on the immune system's ability to defend against infectious agents are poorly understood. Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis can occur in healthy humans, yet binge alcohol use is progressively being recognized as a major risk factor. Although our previous studies demonstrated that binge alcohol exposure results in reduced alveolar macrophage function and increased Burkholderia virulence in vitro, no experimental studie…

Effects of nicotine on ethanol dependence and brain damage.

Almost all alcoholics (80%-95%) smoke tobacco. When alcoholics binge, they achieve high, sustained blood alcohol levels, become physically dependent, and often suffer loss of cognition and other higher cortical functions. Nicotine could have a modulatory effect on ethanol drinking behavior and ethanol-induced brain damage through its cholinergic actions. To determine whether nicotine altered alcohol dependence, alcohol-induced brain damage, or both, a rat model of binge drinking was used to study the effects of nicotine on the alcohol withdrawal syndrome and its associated brain damage. After …

Most, 95 %, of the partners reported alcohol consumption before pregnancy; 18 % were binge drinking (6 standard drinks or more per occasion, each drink containing 12 grams of pure alcohol) at least once every month during the last year. Dose- and sex-related effects of the MAGL inhibitor MCH11 on binge-like ethanol consumption in mice.

The effects of MCH11, a novel monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitor, were evaluated on binge-like ethanol consumption using the drinking-in-the-dark paradigm in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Rodents underwent 4 weeks of binge drinking, and MCH11 (20 and 40 mg kg-1, i.p.) was administered acutely (day 4, DID-3) or repeatedly (days 1-4, DID-4). Quantitative PCR assessed tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA); dopamine receptor 2 (Drd2) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc); and mu-opioid receptor (Oprm1), cannabinoid 1 (Cnr1), and cannabinoid 2 (Cnr2) rec…

The brain age gap as a predictor of alcohol initiation in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests regional and network-level brain imaging features in late childhood are predictive of alcohol use in adolescence. However, the directionality of these effects (i.e. whether they reflect accelerated or delayed neuromaturation) are mixed. We applied a Brain Age Gap Estimation (BrainAGE) model to examine whether overall deviations from typical brain aging trajectories are predictive of (1) alcohol initiation and (2) use behaviour (experimentation versus binge drinking) in adolescence. METHODS: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study releas…

Oscillatory and behavioral indices of cognitive control dysregulation in young adult binge drinkers are influenced by sex differences.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking, defined as episodic alcohol intake reaching intoxication, is prevalent among young adults and linked to impaired cognitive control and risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Even though executive deficits contribute to addiction, evidence on their alterations in young adult binge drinkers (BDs) as a function of biological sex remains limited. This study examined cognitive and motor aspects of decision making as reflected in event-related theta and beta oscillations, respectively. The executive neurobehavioral markers were analyzed in conjunction with alcohol-related a…

RESULTS: Menstrual cycle phases were significantly associated with binge drinking and progesterone-to-estradiol ratio. During the late luteal phase, females showed a lower predicted binge drinking probability of 13% and a higher predicted marginal mean of progesterone-to-estradiol ratio of 95 compared with during the menstrual, f …

Prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption and health-risk behaviors among high school students in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking is a significant social and public health problem in Thailand. We report the prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption and associated health-risk behaviors using data from a 2007-2008 national school survey. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among 50,033 high school and vocational college students from 201 schools in 40 provinces between December 2007 and February 2008. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of past-year drinking, past-30-day binge drinking, and drinking until intoxication were 25.5, 9.5, and 17.3…

Predictors of Empirically Derived Substance Use Patterns Among Sexual and Gender Minority Populations of a Rural Midwestern State.
