Precision medicine is shifting from a single-biomarker paradigm toward multimodal integration of molecular, imaging, and clinical data, with artificial intelligence (AI) serving as a key enabling technology. Multimodal imaging, computational pathology, spatial omics and liquid biopsy have all become more adept at capturing disease and biological variation, and foundation models, especially vision-language models, are now creating a common language between histology, molecular and biomedical text. AI-powered pipelines are also improving data quality upstream, which ultimately means that multimo

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is listed in CITES Appendix II and is protected under the Bern Convention and the EU Habitats Directive, yet it remains a frequent target of wildlife crime, highlighting the urgent need for reliable identification methods. This study focuses on determination and DNA quantification of the Lynx spp. using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The Llynx Qplex quantification multiplex system effectively distinguishes Lynx spp. from other Feliformia species by targeting mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Additionally, we present the results of the developmental validation

Tumor organoids have been pushed forward as advanced model systems for in vitro oncology drug testing, with the eventual goal to direct personalized cancer treatments. However, drug testing efforts suffer from a large variation in experimental conditions for organoid culturing and organoid treatment. Moreover, most drug tests are restricted to whole-well viability as the sole read-out, thereby losing important information about key biological aspects that might be impacted due to the use of administered drugs. These bulk read-outs also discard potential inter-organoid heterogeneity in drug res

The heterogeneity of biological processes driving the severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as reflected in the transcriptome and the relationship between the pathways involved are not well established. Well-defined associations between gene expression profiles and disease progression would benefit efforts to develop novel therapies and to understand disease heterogeneity. We analyzed hepatic gene expression in controls and a cohort with the full histological spectrum of NAFLD. Protein-protein interaction and gene set variation analysis revealed distinct sets of coordinately reg

In the past years, canine and human cases of infestation by Dirofilaria repens (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) have been increasingly reported in several European countries. Subcutaneous dirofilariosis by D. repens may either be asymptomatic in dogs or may be characterized by subcutaneous nodules and other symptoms. Information on the periodicity of D. repens microfilariae in naturally infested animals is scant, and this might impair the accurate diagnosis of subcutaneous dirofilariosis and appropriate control plans. In the present study, eight dogs infested with D. repens were sampled twice daily

The availability of sequenced genomes of human and many experimental animals necessitated the development of new technologies and powerful computational tools that are capable of exploiting these genomic data and ask intriguing questions about complex nature of biological processes. This gave impetus for developing whole genome approaches that can produce functional information of genes in the form of expression profiles and unscramble the relationships between variation in gene expression and the resulting physiological outcome. These profiles represent genetic fingerprints or catalogue of ge

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of urethral instrumentation on pressure-flow study values and subsequent grading of bladder outflow obstruction (BOO) in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) using suprapubic intravesical pressure monitoring.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-two men with LUTS underwent pressure-flow study using suprapubic intravesical pressure monitoring. The urethra was then instrumented successively with a 12 F catheter and a 17 F cystoscope, and a further pressure-flow study recorded after each procedure. Standard pressure-flow variables were measured for the three r

Keeping pace with the rapid growth of proteomic data, the integration of multiproteomic data can improve biomarker identification and cancer diagnosis. However, the data integration needs to overcome substantial challenges owing to considerable variability among diverse data set sources and the extensive range of protein expression levels. In this study, with serum and urine from the same individuals, we established two in-depth paired proteome databases, including 956 serum proteins and 4730 urine proteins. To integrate multiproteomic data, we developed a proteomic-based transfer learning neu

Breast cancer is a heterogenous disease with significant variations in biologic potential, ranging from small, low-grade, DCIS discovered mammographically with essentially no impact on patient survival to rapidly growing, palpable, locally advanced invasive breast cancer with clinically palpable nodal metastasis. The current challenge is to identify the clinical, pathologic, and molecular factors that determine the biologic potential of a particular breast cancer. Although size, nodal status, histologic grade, age, surgical margin, and hormone receptor status of breast cancer are the most impo

PURPOSE: We hypothesize that changes in the transcription of up-regulated genes are biologically meaningful and may be linked to variations in tumor behavior and clinical features. This study aimed to find individual up-regulated genes responsible for clinicopathologic variations in human colorectal cancer.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Genes up-regulated concurrently in four microarray experiments were taken as candidate genes; 20 candidate genes were verified using real-time reverse transcription-PCR in these four experiments, along with 27 new samples. The presence or absence of up-regulation of th

The three general principles of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) are: justification, optimisation (ALARA) and dose limitation. The principle application of optimisation (ALARA) for occupational exposures of workers or the public to external radiation is reliant on low doses being assessed accurately, which could be achieved using biological dosimetry. Although cytogenetic analyses for dicentrics and translocations are the most useful techniques for biological dosimetry, these were initially developed for and have been applied to middle and high range dose exposure

When individuals are accidentally overexposed to ionising radiations, follow-up investigations may include dose assessment by cytogenetics. Scoring of unstable chromosome aberrations (dicentrics, centric rings and acentrics) in peripheral blood lymphocytes is regarded as the most specific method to estimate the exposure dose. It has acquired, in some countries, a medico-legal recognition. Paradoxically, there is no universally adopted technique and so important variations occur in methods and these may influence the quality of results. The only published documents supplying some standardizatio

Microorganisms are key decomposers of vertebrate mortalities, breaking down body tissues and impacting decomposition progress. During human decomposition, both extrinsic environmental factors and intrinsic cadaver-related factors have the potential to impact microbial decomposers either directly or indirectly via altered physical or chemical conditions. While extrinsic factors (e.g., temperature, humidity) explain some variation in microbial response during human decomposition in terrestrial settings, recent work has noted that even under the same environmental conditions, individuals can have

The present cross-sectional descriptive study examined the attitudes and behaviors of health-care providers toward LGBT patients in Lebanon. Participants (N = 141) generally showed positive attitudes and behaviors toward LGBT patients. Mental health providers were significantly less likely to believe that homosexuality is a mental health disorder or that it is unnatural to identify with a gender identity other than one's biological sex when compared to non-mental health providers. Mental health providers were also more likely to be willing to address transgender people by their gender pronouns

BACKGROUND: Estrogen is a vital hormone that regulates many biological functions within the body. These include roles in the development of the secondary sexual organs in both sexes, plus uterine angiogenesis and proliferation during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy in women. The varied biological roles of estrogens in human health also make them a therapeutic target for contraception, mitigation of the adverse effects of the menopause, and treatment of estrogen-responsive tumours. In addition, endogenous (e.g. genetic variation) and external (e.g. exposure to estrogen-like chemicals) factors

INTRODUCTION: Pure invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) is a special type of breast carcinoma characterised by clusters of cells presenting polarity abnormalities. The biological alterations underlying this pattern remain unknown.
METHODS: Pangenomic analysis (n=39), TP53 (n=43) and PIK3CA (n=41) sequencing in a series of IMPCs were performed. A subset of cases was also analysed with whole-exome sequencing (n=4) and RNA sequencing (n=6). Copy number variation profiles were compared with those of oestrogen receptors and grade-matched invasive ductal carcinomas (IDCs) of no special type.

Robust biological systems are expected to accumulate cryptic genetic variation that does not affect the system output in standard conditions yet may play an evolutionary role once phenotypically expressed under a strong perturbation. Genetic variation that is cryptic relative to a robust trait may accumulate neutrally as it does not change the phenotype, yet it could also evolve under selection if it affects traits related to fitness in addition to its cryptic effect. Cryptic variation affecting the vulval intercellular signaling network was previously uncovered among wild isolates of Caenorha
