Mental health providers' perceptions of restrictive eating disorders: Relationship with client body weight.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether mental health providers have different diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations for patients with restrictive eating disorders, depending on the patient's body weight. METHOD: Participants were given one of three versions of a vignette depicting a patient who meets DSM-5 criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical AN with the patient's weight described as either below, within, or above the average range for her age and height. Participants were then asked to respond to a series of questions about diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment reco…

Evaluating the effect of targeting body shape concerns on long-term weight change.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this follow-up to a randomized proof-of-concept study was to determine if targeting body shape concern (BSC) has a clinically significant impact on long-term weight change among adult women of higher body weight with BSC. A secondary aim was to observe the maintenance of body image improvements during follow-up. METHOD: In the original 4-week trial, women were randomized to behavioral weight loss recommendations alone (control; n = 15) or combined with the evidence-based body project intervention (n = 17). All participants were directed to continue monitoring diet and e…

POMC Neuron BBSome Regulation of Body Weight is Independent of its Ciliary Function.

The BBSome, a complex of several Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins including BBS1, has emerged as a critical regulator of energy homeostasis. Although the BBSome is best known for its involvement in cilia trafficking, through a process that involve BBS3, it also regulates the localization of cell membrane receptors underlying metabolic regulation. Here, we show that inducible Bbs1 gene deletion selectively in proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons cause a gradual increase in body weight, which was associated with higher fat mass. In contrast, inducible deletion of Bbs3 gene in POMC neurons fail…

Ileal Microbiota Alters the Immunity Statues to Affect Body Weight in Muscovy Ducks.

The ileum is mainly responsible for food absorption and nutrients transportation. The microbes in its intestinal lumen play an essential role in the growth and health of the host. However, it is still unknown how the ileal microbes affect the body weight of the host. In this study, we used Muscovy ducks as an animal model to investigate the relationship between the ileal microbes and body weight and further explore the potential mechanism. The ileum tissue and ileal contents of 200 Muscovy ducks were collected for mRNA extraction and real-time quantitative PCR, as well as DNA separation and 16…

Reconsidering the Edelman equation: impact of plasma sodium concentration, edema and body weight.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend treatment of dysnatremias to be guided by formulas based on the Edelman equation. This equation describes the relation between plasma sodium concentration and exchangeable cations. However, this formula does not take into account clinical parameters that have recently been associated with local tissue sodium accumulation, which occurs without concurrent water retention. We investigated to what extent such clinical factors affect the Edelman equation and dysnatremia treatment. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis with original data of the Edelman study. Li

Gestational weight gain in uncomplicated twin pregnancies by pre-pregnancy body mass index.

In 2009, the Institute of Medicine provided provisional guidelines for gestational weight gain (GWG) in twin gestations, citing limited research. We examined GWG by pre-pregnancy body mass index in a retrospective cohort of twin births uncomplicated by infant mortality, preterm birth, or low birth weight from Massachusetts in 2006-2017 (N = 273). Median (inter-quartile range [IQR]) GWG was 20.4 kg (IQR: 17.2-25.9 kg) for women who were normal weight pre-pregnancy, 21.3 kg (IQR: 17.2-25.9 kg) for women with overweight pre-pregnancy, and 13.6 kg (IQR: 8.6-20.9 kg) for women with obesity pre-preg

Influence of xanthine oxidoreductase inhibitor, topiroxostat, on body weight of diabetic obese mice.

Plasma xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity is high in metabolic disorders such as diabetic mellitus, obesity, or overweight. Thus, this study investigated whether the XOR inhibitor, topiroxostat, affected body weight. Male db/db mice were fed standard diets with or without topiroxostat for 4 weeks. Body weight and food intake were constantly monitored, along with monitoring plasma biochemical markers, including insulin and XOR activity. Additionally, hepatic hypoxanthine and XOR activity were also documented. Single regression analysis was performed to determine the mechanism. Topiroxostat …

Effect of posture and body weight loading on spinal posterior root reflex responses.

The posterior root muscle response (PRM) is a monosynaptic reflex that is evoked by single pulse transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS). The main aim of this work was to analyse how body weight loading influences PRM reflex threshold measured from several lower limb muscles in healthy participants. PRM reflex responses were evoked with 1-ms rectangular monophasic pulses applied at an interval of 6 s via a self-adhesive electrode (9 × 5 cm) at the T11-T12 vertebral level. Surface electromyographic activity of lower limb muscles was recorded during four different conditions, one in decubi…

Acculturation, food-related and general parenting, and body weight in Chinese-American children.

Parents' food-related and general parenting behaviors may vary according to cultural background, with consequences for child eating behavior and weight. A better understanding of food-related and general parenting behaviors adopted by Chinese-American parents, and the relationships of all of these behaviors with child weight, is essential to aid the development of culturally appropriate interventions to prevent obesity in Chinese-American children. We investigated cross-sectional relationships of acculturation with parental feeding behaviors assessed with the Child Feeding Questionnaire, Paren

Haematologic Markers and Tonsil-to-Body Weight Ratio to Assist Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: In 1998, thalidomide (Thalomid), a known human teratogen, was approved by the US FDA for the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum. To prevent fetal exposure to thalidomide, a restricted distribution risk management programme, the System for Thalidomide Education and Prescribing Safety (S.T.E.P.S.), was implemented. All clinicians, pharmacists and patients who prescribe, dispense and receive thalidomide, respectively, are required to enroll in S.T.E.P.S. Sexually active females of childbearing potential must use two methods of birth control before, during and after treatment. Th

Direct oral anticoagulants in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and extreme body weight.

BACKGROUND: Limited clinical data exist describing the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patient with extreme body weight. Thus, the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) recommends avoiding DOACs in patients with weight >120 Kg, and on the contrary, no restrictions exist for underweight patients. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of extreme body weight on DOAC activity and to compare the clinical outcomes of patients with an extreme body weight versus patients with a normal weight (61-119 Kg) treated with DOACs. METHODS: Single tertiary care Italian centre m…

Fc-GDF15 glyco-engineering and receptor binding affinity optimization for body weight regulation.

GDF15 is a distant TGF-β family member that induces anorexia and weight loss. Due to its function, GDF15 has attracted attention as a potential therapeutic for the treatment of obesity and its associated metabolic diseases. However, the pharmacokinetic and physicochemical properties of GDF15 present several challenges for its development as a therapeutic, including a short half-life, high aggregation propensity, and protease susceptibility in serum. Here, we report the design, characterization and optimization of GDF15 in an Fc-fusion protein format with improved therapeutic properties. Using

A Case Series: Continuous Kidney Replacement Therapy in Neonates With Low Body Weight.

Emerging data indicate that acute kidney injury (AKI) may contribute to a worse prognosis in the infant population. Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) can be used to treat patients with AKI; however, this technique is challenging in patients in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) due to the low body weights and blood volumes in this population. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a potential modality since it is technically less challenging. However, PD has been associated with several disadvantages, including poor fluid status control, catheter-associated leakage, and peritonitis. Unfortunately, …

Body Mass Index and Lymphedema Morbidity: Comparison of Obese versus Normal-Weight Patients.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for the development of secondary lymphedema after axillary lymphadenectomy and radiation therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether obesity influences the morbidity of lymphedema in patients who have the condition. METHODS: Two cohorts of patients were compared: group 1, normal weight (body mass index ≤25 kg/m); and group 2, obese (body mass index ≥30 kg/m). Inclusion criteria were patients aged 21 years or older with lymphedema confirmed by lymphoscintigraphy. Covariates included age, sex, lymphedema type (primary or secondary), location,

Menstrual dysfunction and body weight dissatisfaction among Finnish young athletes and non-athletes.

To determine the prevalence of menstrual dysfunction (MD; ie, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea) and attitudes toward body weight among athletes and non-athletes, we studied a cohort of athletes and non-athletes, in adolescence (14-16 years) and subsequently in young adulthood (18-20 years). We further studied the differences between athletes reporting MD and eumenorrheic athletes at both time periods and identified physical and behavioral characteristics that might predict MD in young adulthood. Data were collected using questionnaires, accelerometers, and a pre-participation screening. In adolesc…

Revisiting Weight-Normalized SUV and Lean-Body-Mass-Normalized SUV in PET Studies.

SUV normalized by total body weight is affected by the amount of body fat. The SUV of normal tissues and lesions is higher (overestimated) in obese patients than in patients with a normal body mass index (BMI). SUL (SUV normalized by lean body mass [LBM]) is recommended for more accurate SUV results. Given the importance of a quantitative PET parameter, particularly when comparing PET studies, we aimed to revisit the effect of obesity on SUV, measuring SUL in normal-BMI patients and obese patients and testing the effect of the amount of LBM. Methods: 18F-FDG whole-body images of adult patients…

Feasibility and safety of using low-body-weight donors in pediatric liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Donors with low-body-weight were previously reported to be related to inferior recipient outcomes in pediatric liver transplantation. However, the scarce availability of age and size-matched organs has encouraged us to re-evaluate the feasibility and safety of using low-body-weight donors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 91 deceased donor pediatric liver transplantation between January 2014 and December 2016, donor weight less than 5 kg was defined as low-body-weight donors. The recipients were divided into two groups according to donor weight. (≤5 kg and 5 kg < to ≤20 kg). D
