Diet Quality and Micronutrient Intake among Long-Term Weight Loss Maintainers.

Inadequate vitamin and mineral intake is documented among individuals with obesity, but is unknown among long-term weight loss maintainers (WLM). This study examined dietary quality and micronutrient adequacy among WLMs in a commercial weight management program. Participants were 1207 WLM in Weight Watchers (WW) who had maintained a 9.1 kg or greater weight loss (29.7 kg on average) for 3.4 years and had a body mass index (BMI) of 28.3 kg/m2. A control group of weight stable adults with obesity (controls; N = 102) had a BMI of 41.1 kg/m2. Measures included the Diet History Questionnaire-II, He

Building research in diet and cognition: The BRIDGE randomized controlled trial.

Obesity has been linked to cognitive impairment, cognitive decline and dementia. Given that 38.5% of U.S. adults 60years and older are obese and these numbers are rapidly increasing, strategies to decouple obesity from cognitive decline are needed. Innovative lifestyle strategies that may postpone the onset of subclinical symptoms or even arrest the transition to overt dementia in at-risk individuals are critically needed. Poor diet is central to the development of obesity and diet may affect cognition. Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is associated with reduced risk of cognitive im

Effects of diet on pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital in healthy dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of various diets on the pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital and the interactive effects of changes in body composition and metabolic rate. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 27 healthy sexually intact adult female Beagles. PROCEDURE: Pharmacokinetic studies of phenobarbital were performed before and 2 months after dogs were fed 1 of 3 diets (group 1, maintenance diet; group 2, protein-restricted diet; group 3, fat- and protein-restricted diet) and treated with phenobarbital (approx 3 mg/kg [1.4 mg/lb] of body weight, p.o., q 12 h). Effects of a low-carbohydrate diet on insulin-resistant dyslipoproteinemia-a randomized controlled feeding trial.

BACKGROUND: Carbohydrate restriction shows promise for diabetes, but concerns regarding high saturated fat content of low-carbohydrate diets limit widespread adoption. OBJECTIVES: This preplanned ancillary study aimed to determine how diets varying widely in carbohydrate and saturated fat affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors during weight-loss maintenance. METHODS: After 10-14% weight loss on a run-in diet, 164 participants (70% female; BMI = 32.4 ± 4.8 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to 3 weight-loss maintenance diets for 20 wk. The prepared diets contained 20% protein and differe

Beneficial effects of environmental enrichment and food entrainment in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: In addition to their cognitive and motor deficits, R6/2 mice show a progressive disintegration in circadian rhythms that mirrors the problems associated with sleep-wake disturbances experienced by patients with Huntington's disease (HD). It has been shown previously that motor and cognitive performance, as well as survival, can be improved in transgenic mouse models of HD through the provision of environmental enrichment. METHODS: We compared the effect of two different overnight entrainment paradigms presented either separately or in combination. The first was environmental enric

Are marked body shape concerns associated with poorer outcomes at the one-year follow-up in anorexia nervosa?

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex disease in which obsessive thoughts about body image, shape, or weight are expressed. The intensity of these concerns varies among individuals, and only a few studies have focused on their impact on patients' clinical course when patients are treated on an outpatient basis. Our study aimed to determine whether marked body concerns at inclusion were predictive of the one-year follow-up. METHOD: Participants (N = 72) were women seeking treatment for AN in a specialized unit for eating disorder management. All participants were assessed at inclusion

Megestrol acetate in a moderate dose for the treatment of malnutrition-inflammation complex in maintenance dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome and anorexia, common conditions in maintenance dialysis patients, are strongly associated with higher mortality and hospitalization and lower quality of life (QoL) in this population. Megestrol acetate, 800 mg/day, has been shown to increase appetite and food intake and to mitigate inflammation in cachectic AIDS and cancer patients, leading to weight gain, but it is also associated with side effects at this dose. METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of the oral solution of megestrol acetate in half of its conventional dose in improving the

Medical nutrition therapy in incretin-treated obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and dual agonists of the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptors, exemplified by semaglutide and tirzepatide, respectively, have reshaped care for obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Their benefits extend beyond weight reduction to symptoms and physical function and, for tirzepatide, a lower risk of worsening heart failure. Yet kilograms lost do not reveal whether treatment preferentially reduces harmful adiposity, preserves muscle function, or maintains nutritional adequacy

Maternal low sodium intake and early postnatal diuretics program metabolic and ventilatory dysfunction in mice.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal disruption of sodium homeostasis, which is critical for organ and cell function, may impact growth, metabolism, and pulmonary function. METHODS: Two murine models were studied. First, maternal mice were supplied with a standard (0.15%) or low sodium (0.04% Na) diet from embryonic day 18 until postnatal day 21 (E18-P21). Second, offspring of mothers on standard Na were administered daily furosemide (30 mg/kg ip) on P10-P13 or sham injection. All pups received 0.15% Na diet at weaning. In male offspring, weight and body composition were serially measured while total energy

[Clinical effectiveness of N-oleyl-phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (NOPE) in obesity: our experience].

Adjustment and maintenance of body weight are the result of many process combination, that affect both the gastrointestinal system and other mechanisms in the central nervous system. Often a diet modification alone is not sufficient to guarantee significant changes in body weight. For this reason, it sometimes necessary to make other interventions, in order to help an individual to adhere to the diet as much as possible and to achieve the objectives established. The N-oleyl-phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (NOPE) is a phospholipid. It can be endogenous or exogenous, and it is present in cell membrane

Modified Proximal Gastrectomy and D2 Lymphadenectomy Is an Oncologically Sound Operation for Locally Advanced Proximal and GEJ Adenocarcinoma.

Background: Proximal gastrectomy (PG) with double tract reconstruction (DTR) offers organ preservation for early gastric cancers, leading to reduced vitamin B12 deficiency, less weight loss, and improved quality of life. The JCOG1401 study confirmed excellent long-term outcomes for PG in stage I gastric cancer. However, in locally advanced proximal gastric cancer (LAPGC), preserving the gastric body and lymph node station 4d may compromise margin clearance and adequate lymphadenectomy. Methods: We propose a modified PG that removes the distal esophagus, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), cardia,

Weight Management and Physical Activity for Breast Cancer Prevention and Control.

Observational evidence has consistently linked excess adiposity and inactivity to increased breast cancer risk and to poor outcomes in individuals diagnosed with early-stage, potentially curable breast cancer. There is less information from clinical trials testing the effect of weight management or physical activity interventions on breast cancer risk or outcomes, but a number of ongoing trials will test the impact of weight loss and other lifestyle changes after cancer diagnosis on the risk of breast cancer recurrence. Lifestyle changes have additional benefits beyond their potential to decre

Sleep disorders in children.

Although sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are common in both children and adults, the clinical features and treatments for these conditions differ considerably between these two populations. Whereas an adult with obstructive sleep apnea typically presents with a history of obesity, snoring, and prominent daytime somnolence, a child with the condition is more likely to present with normal body weight, tonsillar hypertrophy, and inattentiveness during school classes. The adult with suspected sleep apnea almost always undergoes a baseline polysomnogram and proceeds to

Periodontitis as a component of hyperinflammation: treating periodontitis in obese diabetic patients.

Increasing evidence points to periodontal disease as a significant risk factor in the etiology of other diseases with inflammatory components, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thus, it may be possible to reduce the risk for other diseases with an inflammatory component by maintaining a healthy periodontium. In addition to plaque and calculus, other factors such as diet, body weight, lifestyle, and environmental stress complicate the maintenance of a healthy periodontium. It is becoming more important for the general dentist to address these additional risk factors i

Mechanisms of islet amyloidosis toxicity in type 2 diabetes.

Amyloid formation by the neuropancreatic hormone, islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP or amylin), one of the most amyloidogenic sequences known, leads to islet amyloidosis in type 2 diabetes and to islet transplant failure. Under normal conditions, IAPP plays a role in the maintenance of energy homeostasis by regulating several metabolic parameters, such as satiety, blood glucose levels, adiposity and body weight. The mechanisms of IAPP amyloid formation, the nature of IAPP toxic species and the cellular pathways that lead to pancreatic β-cell toxicity are not well characterized. Several mechanism
