OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of the inferior wall cartilage of the auditory meatus in surgical treatment of congenital first branchial cleft anomalies (CFBCAs) in children.
METHODS: Twenty children diagnosed with CFBCAs who underwent surgery between December 2018 and June 2022 at our hospital were retrospectively analyzed and classified according to their Work lesion type. Developing structures such as hindbrain, neural crest cells or spinal cord express Hoxa3. Here, we have investigated the regulatory role of a 2-kb fragment spanning the proximal promoter of Hoxa3 by a reporter-based approach in mice. We show that this fragment promotes reporter activity in ganglionic and branchial compartments known to express Hoxa3 but for which no cis-regulatory elements have been identified so far. We also show that the 2-kb promoter fragment is active in rhombomere 4 and in the ganglion of the cranial nerve complex VII/VIII that are devoid of Hoxa3 expression.

Members of the Tshz gene family encode putative zinc fingers transcription factors that are broadly expressed during mouse embryogenesis. Tshz1 is detected from E9.5 in the somites, the spinal cord, the limb buds and the branchial arches. In order to assess the function of Tshz1 during mouse development, we generated Tshz1-deficient mice. Tshz1 inactivation leads to neonatal lethality and causes multiple developmental defects. This report describes the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings in 21 cases of a highly distinctive tumor with a strong predilection for the lower neck region of adult males. PURPOSE: Major neck surgeries are conventionally performed under general anesthesia. To receive general anesthesia, patients must meet certain criteria that have attendant limitations. The role of the Hippo signaling pathway in cranial neural crest (CNC) development is poorly understood. We used the Wnt1(Cre) and Wnt1(Cre2SOR) drivers to conditionally ablate both Yap and Taz in the CNC of mice. When using either Cre driver, Yap and Taz deficiency in the CNC resulted in enlarged, hemorrhaging branchial arch blood vessels and hydrocephalus. OBJECTIVES: This study explores application of selective neck dissection technique in recurrent second, third, and fourth branchial cleft deformities.
METHODS: A total of 19 cases of recurrent second, third, and fourth branchial cleft deformities were treated using the selective neck dissection technique, during which the sternocleidomastoid muscle, cervical anterior muscle, and carotid sheath were contoured. The lesion above the prevertebral fascia was then resected en bloc. Finally, the opening of the internal fistula was ligated and sutured using the purse-string approach.

Embryological abnormalities of the branchial apparatus present an interesting diagnostic and surgical challenge. Thymic cysts are a rare form of branchial apparatus anomaly, resulting from abnormal development of the third pharyngeal pouch. We present two cases of a thymic cyst coexisting with a non recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRILN), two anomalies that to our knowledge have not been associated previously. A possible embryological explication for this double abnormality is discussed, while the clinical implications of this association are presented.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of vrk1 gene in two Chinese pedigrees of the first and second branchial arch syndrome.
METHOD: Sixty members in 2 Chinese pedigrees were recruited. The exon 2 -13 were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing.
RESULT: We found a new SNP in proband of Shandong pedigree.
CONCLUSION: vrk1 gene mutation can be excluded in 2 Chinese pedigrees of the first and second branchial arch syndrome.

We experienced 87 anesthetic managements of 26 patients with first and second brachial arch syndrome in the past 20 years. The migration pathways and spatial distribution of neural crest cells largely depend on the embryonic architecture.
