Mammographic and sonographic findings of steatocystoma multiplex presenting as breast lumps.

Steatocystoma multiplex (SM) is an uncommon cutaneous disorder characterised by multiple intradermal cysts distributed over the trunk and proximal extremities. This condition affects both genders and is often inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, although sporadic cases have been described. This report describes the mammographic and sonographic features of the cysts, which presented as breast lumps, for evaluation. The cysts appeared as numerous well-circumscribed, radiolucent nodules with thin radiodense rims on mammography. On sonography, the cysts could be hypoechoic, isoechoic or demon

[Ultrasound mammography: development, current status and limits].

Starting with a survey of the historical development of ultrasound-mammography the current status of this method within other diagnostic procedures of the breast is defined. Basing on over 1000 examinations since 1975 we report the sonographic possibilities in demonstrating different normal and pathologic breast structures. Pathologic structures are: Dudectasy, Cysts, Mastitis, Fibroadenoma, Carcinoma and Gynaecomasty. Own results are reported and the future of ultrasound mammography is discussed.

beta-Glucuronidase levels in patients with fibrocystic breast disease.

Certain enzymes in tissues and body fluids may, through reversal of the detoxification process, influence the composition and availability of steroid hormones, toxins, and carcinogens. The ubiquitous enzyme beta-glucuronidase, which hydrolyzes glucuronide conjugates, thereby reversing one of the main detoxification and excretion pathways, was found to vary in concentration in different cysts over a 300-fold range. The distribution was a continuum, devoid of discrete sub-populations. Evidence obtained on selected cyst fluids of high and low beta-glucuronidase activities indicated that the level

[Dual-energy subtraction radiography of the breast].

Dual-energy projection radiography was applied to breast examination. To perform the dual-energy subtraction radiography using a digital radiography unit, high and low-energy exposures were made at an appropriate time interval under differing X-ray exposure conditions. Dual-energy subtraction radiography was performed in 41 cancer patients in whom the tumor shadow was equivocal or the border of cancer infiltration was not clearly demonstrated by compression mammography, and 15 patients with benign diseases such as fibrocystic disease, cyst and fibroadenoma. In 21 cases out of the 41 cancer pat

Kunitz type protease inhibitor EgKI-1 from the canine tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus as a promising therapeutic against breast cancer.

EgKI-1, a member of the Kunitz type protease inhibitor family, is highly expressed by the oncosphere of the canine tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, the stage that is infectious to humans and ungulates, giving rise to a hydatid cyst localized to the liver and other organs. Larval protoscoleces, which develop within the hydatid cyst, have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties, although the precise molecules involved have not been identified. We show that recombinant EgKI-1 inhibits the growth and migration of a range of human cancers including breast, melanoma and cervical cancer cell li

Cystic hygroma of the breast in a 5 year old boy presenting as a gynecomastia.

Cystic hygroma, also known as lymphangioma, are unusual congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. Cystic lymphangioma is a rare lesion in the breast of children. Only a few cases have been documented in literature. We report a rare case of a 5-year-old boy presented with a gradually enlarging, painless breast mass which was identified sonographically and histologically as a breast lymphangioma and treated by surgical excision. A local excision of the lump was performed and a diagnosis of cystic lymphangioma was made. Cyst was surgically removed, with preservation of normal tissue, and

Imaging of giant breast masses with pathological correlation.

Ultrasonography (US) and mammography are the two basic techniques for routine imaging in the diagnosis of breast diseases. A wide variety of breast conditions such as lipoma, hamartoma, cyst, fibroadenoma, phyllodes tumour, haematoma, abscess and carcinoma can result in solitary or multiple giant masses. These conditions may appear similar on physical examination. The clinical significance of these entities is that some lesions necessitate mastectomy but some lesions may require only local excision, aspiration or even conservative management. Imaging has enhanced our ability to characterise th

Steatocystoma multiplex: appearance at mammography.

The authors present mammographic findings in a patient with steatocystoma multiplex. Numerous oil cysts were seen in both breasts at mammography. The mammographic appearance is characteristic of, if not pathognomonic for, steatocystoma multiplex.

Beyond the uterus: Metastatic leiomyoma.

Uterine leiomyomas are common benign smooth muscle tumors typically confined to the uterus and hormonally responsive to estrogen and progesterone, typically regressing after menopause. Rarely, they demonstrate metastatic behavior despite benign histology, a condition known as benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML). BML is exceedingly rare and can mimic malignancy, posing diagnostic challenges. We report a rare case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of hysterectomy for leiomyomas who presented with dyspnea and chest pain. Imaging revealed numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules, later confirmed

Patient characteristics and age-dependent sub-populations in severe fibrocystic breast disease--the Hjørring project.

This study aimed at providing a detailed anamnestic, clinical, and mammographical characterization of 109 patients with fibrocystic breast disease, who were selected on the basis of pronounced mastodynia, prominent palpable structure and mammographical confirmation of the clinical diagnosis. Since these patients were selected for subsequent therapy, and most of them also underwent various hormonal investigations, accurate differential diagnosis was considered essential. Therefore, X-ray mammography was supplemented as required with adenography, galactography, and aspiration of cysts followed b

[ASYMPTOMATIC ADULT RETROGASTRIC BRONCHOGENIC CYST: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT CONSIDERATION BY ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASOUND FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION (EUS-FNA)].

BACKGROUND: Adult bronchogenic cysts are rare. Retrogastric bronchogenic cysts are even rarer with only over 30 cases being reported in the English literature. These foregut cysts can be confused with cystic tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a large gastric bronchogenic cyst in an asymptomatic 61-year-old woman who underwent an abdominal computerized tomography as part of a routine follow-up after lumpectomy due to breast cancer. Final diagnosis was made by endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) which led to conservative management of the patient who has remai

Crystallizing galactocele: A rare case report and review of literature.

Crystallizing galactocele is an uncommon condition that produces a viscous, chalky substance on fine needle aspiration cytology. (FNAC). Both the diagnosis and the management of this illness include the use of FNAC. Here, we discuss the case of a 25-year-old nursing woman who experienced left breast edema lump for two years. The upper outer quadrant of the leftt breast was involved by the hard, small, non-tender, and movable enlargement. The lesion's FNAC produced a thick, milky, and chalky substance. Numerous semi-transparent crystals of various sizes and shapes with angulated edges could be

Hyperprolactinemia and galactocele formation after augmentation mammoplasty.

Galactorrhea and galactocele formation are rare complications of augmentation mammoplasty. A number of case reports have been published in the literature; however, the etiology remains unclear. A case is presented of a unilateral galactocele associated with transient hyperprolactinemia after augmentation mammoplasty.

Breast calcifications: mammographic evaluation.

Breast calcifications may be categorized as benign, probably benign, and suggestive of malignancy. The interpretation scheme presented here utilizes a systematic structured approach: identify characteristically benign calcifications, for which no further evaluation is needed; define as suggestive of malignancy those remaining calcifications that present as isolated parenchymal clusters of tiny calcific particles; and (optional) attempt to downgrade some of these suspicious calcifications into the "probably benign" category, so that they can be managed by periodic mammographic follow-up rather

Continuous ultrasound B-scanning of palpable breast masses.

Of 210 pathologically confirmed palpable breast masses examined by continuous ultrasound B-scanning using a 2.5- or 7-MHz transducer and mammography, fluid filled cysts more than 1 cm in diameter were diagnosed accurately in 75 cases. Of the 103 solid masses studied by echography, 31 were circumscribed (29 benign fibroadenomas and 2 circumscribed medullary carcinomas) and 72 were not. Infiltrating carcinoma represented the majority of the latter type, although 2 cases of chronic inflammation had the same echographic appearance. Thirty palpable breast masses less than 2 cm in diameter were not
