Pain assessment and management practices in Hungarian neonatal intensive care units: a nationwide survey.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) are frequently exposed to painful procedures. Despite increasing evidence regarding the adverse short- and long-term consequences of untreated neonatal pain, pain assessment and management remain inadequate worldwide. This study aimed to describe neonatal pain assessment and management practices in Hungarian level III NICUs. METHODS: A prospective multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted between June and October 2023. An anonymous online questionnaire was distributed to the heads of all Hungarian level III NI

Nesfatin-1 across human reproduction and early life: implications for infertility, pregnancy complications, and lactation.

Nesfatin-1, a peptide derived from nucleobindin-2 (NUCB2), is a widely expressed neuroendocrine factor originally identified for its anorexigenic effects in the central nervous system. Beyond energy homeostasis, accumulating evidence implicates nesfatin-1 in the regulation of glucose metabolism, stress-axis activity, inflammation, and reproductive function. These properties make nesfatin-1 particularly relevant to human reproduction and early life, physiological states characterized by profound metabolic and endocrine adaptations. The objective of this review is to examine whether nesfatin-1 f

Retrorsine in breast milk influences copper handling in suckling rat pups.

AIMS: To explore the hypothesis that a second xenobiotic agent is required with excess copper to produce Indian Childhood Cirrhosis, this study investigated the effect of the pyrrolizidine alkaloid retrorsine fed to the mother during the suckling period upon the serial changes in neonatal copper status. METHODS: Female Wistar rats with new-born litters were fed either a control or a retrorsine (50 mg/kg) diet. At 0, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18 and 21 days, pups from each litter were weighed, sacrificed and their livers removed for copper, DNA and metallothionein analysis. Serum samples were assayed for

Perfluorooctanoic acid-induced inhibition of placental prolactin-family hormone and fetal growth retardation in mice.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent pollutant worldwide and even found in human cord blood and breast milk. Some animal studies have reported that PFOA causes developmental toxicity such as fetal weight loss, but the mechanism is still unclear. This study focused on developmental toxicity of PFOA, particularly impacts of PFOA on placental endocrine function such as placental prolactin (PRL)-family hormone gene expression and fetal growth in mouse. Time-mated CD-1 mice were dosed by gavage with 0, 2, 10 and 25 mg/kg B.W/day of PFOA (n-10) dissolved with de-ionized water from gestation

Mouse mammary tumor virus is implicated in severity of colitis and dysbiosis in the IL-10-/- mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Following viral infection, genetically manipulated mice lacking immunoregulatory function may develop colitis and dysbiosis in a strain-specific fashion that serves as a model for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We found that one such model of spontaneous colitis, the interleukin (IL)-10 knockout (IL-10-/-) model derived from the SvEv mouse, had evidence of increased Mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) viral RNA expression compared to the SvEv wild type. MMTV is endemic in several mouse strains as an endogenously encoded Betaretrovirus that is passaged as an exogenous agent in breas

Does Caesarean Section or Preterm Delivery Influence TGF-β2 Concentrations in Human Colostrum?

Human colostrum (HC) is a rich source of immune mediators that play a role in immune defences of a newly born infant. The mediators include transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) which exists in three isoforms that regulate cellular homeostasis and inflammation, can induce or suppress immune responses, limit T helper 1 cells (Th1) reactions and stimulate secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) production. Human milk TGF-β also decreases apoptosis of intestinal cells and suppresses macrophage cytokine expression. The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of TGF-β2 in HC obtained from the m

Effect of Continuous Lipopolysaccharide Induction on Oxidative Stress and Heart Injury in Weaned Piglets.

After weaning, piglets no longer consume breast milk, and their immune system is not yet fully developed. At this time, if weaned piglets are infected with E. coli, their subsequent growth will be seriously affected. In the present study, 48 healthy 28-day-old weaned piglets (6.65 ± 1.19 kg, Duroc × Landrace × Large White) were randomly divided into an LPS group and control group. Piglets in the LPS group were intraperitoneally injected with an LPS solution (LPS was dissolved in sterile saline to form a solution of 100 μg/mL and injected at a dose of 1 mL per kilogram of body weight) for 13 co

Dose-Dependent Neuroprotective Effects of Bovine Lactoferrin Following Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia in the Immature Rat Brain.

Injuries to the developing brain due to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) are common causes of neurological disabilities in preterm babies. HI, with oxygen deprivation to the brain or reduced cerebral blood perfusion due to birth asphyxia, often leads to severe brain damage and sequelae. Injury mechanisms include glutamate excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, and exacerbated inflammation. Nutritional intervention is emerging as a therapeutic alternative to prevent and rescue brain from HI injury. Lactoferrin (Lf) is an iron-binding protein present in saliva, tears, and breast

Avoidance of bottles during the establishment of breastfeeds in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants often start milk feeds by gavage tube. As they mature, sucking feeds are gradually introduced. Women with preterm infants may not always be in hospital to breastfeed their baby and need an alternative approach to feeding. Most commonly, milk (expressed breast milk or formula) is given by bottle. Whether using bottles during establishment of breastfeeds is detrimental to breastfeeding success is a topic of ongoing debate. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of avoidance of bottle feeds during establishment of breastfeeding on the likelihood of successful breastfeedi

Factors associated with post-neonatal mortality in Ethiopia: Using the 2019 Ethiopia mini demographic and health survey.

BACKGROUND: Post-neonatal mortality is the number of deaths of infants aged 28 days through 11 months and is expressed as post-neonatal deaths per 1000 live births per year. This study aimed to identify the factors that influence post-neonatal death using the 2019 Ethiopia mini demographic and health survey (EMDHS2019). METHODS: The study included 2126 post neonates born from mothers who had been interviewed about births in the five years before the survey. The survey gathering period was carried out from March 21, 2019, to June 28, 2019. The data were first analyzed with a chi-square test of

[Viral superantigens].

Superantigens (SAgs) are microbial proteins produced by various microorganisms that elicit excessive and strong stimulation of T cells via an unconventional mechanism. They cause polyclonal activation of T cells in a non-specific manner, by binding to a particular variable-beta (Vβ) chain of T-cell receptor (TCR) and MHC class II molecule, in unprocessed form and outside of peptide-binding cleft, forming a bridge between the antigen presenting cell and the T cell. SAgs are classified into three groups, namely 1) exogenous (soluble proteins and exotoxins secreted by microorganisms), 2) endogeno

A systematic review of structured versus non-structured breastfeeding programmes to support the initiation and duration of exclusive breastfeeding in acute and primary healthcare settings.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Background: Breastfeeding has many important health benefits for the woman and her baby. Despite evidence of benefit from a large number of well conducted studies, breastfeeding uptake and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding remain low in many countries. In order to improve breastfeeding rates, policy and guidelines at global, individual country level and in local healthcare settings have recommended that structured programmes to support breastfeeding should be introduced. The objective of this review was to consider the evidence of outcomes of structured compared with n

S100A8 and S100A9 Are Important for Postnatal Development of Gut Microbiota and Immune System in Mice and Infants.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: After birth, the immune system matures via interactions with microbes in the gut. The S100 calcium binding proteins S100A8 and S100A9, and their extracellular complex form, S100A8-A9, are found in high amounts in human breast milk. We studied levels of S100A8-A9 in fecal samples (also called fecal calprotectin) from newborns and during infancy, and their effects on development of the intestinal microbiota and mucosal immune system. METHODS: We collected stool samples (n = 517) from full-term (n = 72) and preterm infants (n = 49) at different timepoints over the first year o

Environmental cancer in the Indian context.

There is increasing global concern on the upward trend of cancer attributable to environmental causes. This has found articulate expression in the intensive action programme initiated in developed countries to carry out systematic epidemiological surveillance studies on environmental based cancer, to conduct both short-term and long-term studies on experimental animals on the mechanism of induction and to search for preventive measures. Of all environmental agents, chemicals which have been introduced by man have received the maximum attention on account of the fact that besides functioning pe
