Prevalence and breed predisposition for spinal diseases in pugs and French bulldogs.

BACKGROUND: Pugs and French bulldogs (FBDs) are commonly presented for spinal disease. The aim of this study was to define the most common spinal diseases in both breeds. METHODS: This was a monocentric retrospective study including pugs and FBDs presenting with clinical signs consistent with spinal disease between 2010 and 2022. The information collected included signalment, onset of clinical signs, presence of spinal pain, progression of clinical signs, presence of urinary or faecal incontinence and neurological examination findings. RESULTS: A total of 439 FBDs with 448 diagnoses and 106

Spinal Neuronavigation for Lumbar Plate Fixation in Miniature Breed Dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of spinal neuronavigation for plate fixation of lumbar vertebrae in miniature breed dogs using a surgical navigation system in combination with a custom-made reference array. STUDY DESIGN: This was an experimental cadaveric study in five miniature breed dogs. METHODS: A 4-hole locking plate with four 2.0-mm locking screws was placed on two adjacent lumbar vertebrae using a neuronavigation system consisting of a mobile cone beam computed tomography linked to a navigation system. The procedure was performed by a novice s

Retained cartilaginous core in the distal radius of a small breed dog.

A 5-month-old castrated male Smooth Fox Terrier presented for a 1-month history of right thoracic limb lameness. Physical examination revealed right elbow pain on extension and mild soft tissue swelling of the distal antebrachium. Radiographs and computed tomography showed elongated focal radiolucent regions in the distal radial metaphysis. There was incongruity of the right elbow with a short radius. Bone biopsy and histopathology of the regions confirmed a retained cartilaginous core characterised by bony trabeculae with frequently retained central cartilaginous cores. A dynamic proximal uln

Inheritance of Monogenic Hereditary Skin Disease and Related Canine Breeds.

The plasticity of the genome is an evolutionary factor in all animal species, including canines, but it can also be the origin of diseases caused by hereditary genetic mutation. Genetic changes, or mutations, that give rise to a pathology in most cases result from recessive alleles that are normally found with minority allelic frequency. The use of genetic improvement increases the consanguinity within canine breeds and, on many occasions, also increases the frequency of these recessive alleles, increasing the prevalence of these pathologies. This prevalence has been known for a long time, but

Digital Lesions in Dogs: A Statistical Breed Analysis of 2912 Cases.

Breed predispositions to canine digital neoplasms are well known. However, there is currently no statistical analysis identifying the least affected breeds. To this end, 2912 canine amputated digits submitted from 2014-2019 to the Laboklin GmbH & Co. KG for routine diagnostics were statistically analyzed. The study population consisted of 155 different breeds (most common: 634 Mongrels, 411 Schnauzers, 197 Labrador Retrievers, 93 Golden Retrievers). Non-neoplastic processes were present in 1246 (43%), tumor-like lesions in 138 (5%), and neoplasms in 1528 cases (52%). Benign tumors (n = 335) we

Characterization of Breed Specific Differences in Spermatozoal Transcriptomes of Sheep in Australia.

Reduced reproductive efficiency results in economic losses to the Australian sheep industry. Reproductive success, particularly after artificial insemination, is dependent on a number of contributing factors on both ewe and ram sides. Despite considerable emphasis placed on characterising ewe side contributions, little emphasis has been placed on characterising ram side contributions to conception success. Over 14,000 transcripts are in spermatozoa of other species, which are transferred to the ova on fertilisation. These transcripts conceivably influence early embryonic development and whethe

Genetics of bull semen characteristics in a multi-breed cattle population.

Little is known of the genetic variability in semen quality traits in cattle and their inter-relationships. The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for a range of semen quality measures. The data consisted of 35,573 ejaculates from 787 artificial insemination bulls of 16 breeds. Genetic parameters were estimated using a repeatability animal linear mixed model. Large breed differences were detected with Belgian Blue bulls, on average, producing lesser semen volume than all other breeds while the Charolais bulls, on average, produced semen with fewer live sperm and

Comparison of markers predicting litter size in different pig breeds.

To overcome the limitations of conventional analysis of male fertility in animals and humans, proteomic studies have been performed to develop fertility-related biomarkers for prognosis and diagnosis of male fertility. However, the studies were focused on specific species or breeds. Therefore, a study is required to validate whether fertility-related markers would apply to other breeds in pigs. In this study, previously developed fertility-related biomarkers from Landrace were validated to use for prognosis of male fertility in commercially available breeds. Expression level of eight biomarker

Thermoregulation of male sheep of indigenous or exotic breeds in a tropical environment.

Climate change has intensified the frequency of heat waves in the world, thereby exposing farm animals to stressful conditions. For better productive performance it is important to identify the most resilient genotypes. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the thermoregulatory responses of rams of tropical indigenous (Morada Nova and Santa Inês) and exotic breeds (Dorper and Texel), by monitoring the environmental and physiological indicators related to heat tolerance. The experiment was carried out in a tropical climate region (Cwa), in Brazil, for twelve months, which comprised spring, summer

Microbiological characterization of a newly established pig breed, Aachen Minipigs.

BACKGROUND: To alleviate the shortage of human donor organs or tissues for the treatment of organ and tissue failure including diabetes, pigs are considered suitable donor animals. As organs from conventional pigs are usually too large, those from minipigs may be better suited. We recently characterized the Göttingen Minipigs, a breed well characterized concerning the presence of zoonotic microorganisms and found hepatitis E virus (HEV) and porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) in some animals. Here, we characterize another minipig, the Aachen Minipig (AaMP), a pig breed recently established close to

Analysis of risk factors for elbow dysplasia in giant breed dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Identify radiographic risk factors for development of elbow dysplasia in giant breed dogs less than one year of age. METHODS: Twenty-five giant breed puppies (Bernese Mountain dogs, English Mastiff, and Newfoundland) were studied. Both elbows of each dog were radiographed monthly from two to six months of age, then every other month until radial and ulnar physeal closure, followed two months later by bilateral elbow computed tomography. Radiographic parameters measured included the presence or absence of a separate centre of ossification of the anconeal process (SCOAP), medial coro

Comparison of tibial plateau angles in small and large breed dogs.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease can affect dogs of all sizes. The literature describing tibial plateau angle (TPA) in small breed dogs is limited. A retrospective study was conducted in unselected dogs presented for stifle or tibial examination to compare TPA in small breed dogs (n = 146 dogs, 185 stifles) versus large breed dogs (n = 200 dogs, 265 stifles). Small breed dogs had a mean TPA 3.1° ± 0.6° higher than large breed dogs. There were higher TPAs in spayed females and castrated males for all dogs compared with intact males (3.6° ± 1.0° and 2.7° ± 1.0°, respectively). Dogs with u

Breed and sex risk factors for canine babesiosis in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, canine babesiosis typically is an acute disease in susceptible individuals and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of the disease, there have been no large studies that have examined the influence of breed and sex on disease susceptibility. HYPOTHESIS: Toy breeds have a lower risk of babesiosis than working dogs. ANIMALS: A total of 1,222 dogs diagnosed with canine babesiosis and 11,484 noninfected dogs presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital's small animal outpatient clinic between 2004 and 2010. METHODS: Retr

Parasitism by Oestrus ovis: influence of sheep breed and nematode infections.

Previous studies showed that Santa Ines (SI) hair sheep were more resistant to gastrointestinal nematode infections (GIN) than Ile de France (IF) sheep. The present experiment aimed to evaluate if that reported resistance difference against GIN also occurred against Oestrus ovis infestation and also to evaluate the influence of O. ovis infestation on the gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) infections. SI (n=12) and IF (n=12) young male lambs were weaned at 2 months of age and moved to a paddock (0.3 ha) with Brachiaria decumbens grass, where they also received concentrate ration. The animals were

Osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral head in two small-breed dogs.

Shoulder pathology consistent with osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral head was diagnosed in two small-breed dogs. In both cases, the diagnosis was made tentatively on the basis of radiography and confirmed by arthroscopy of the affected shoulder joint. Both dogs were successfully treated by surgical removal of a flap of cartilage from the affected area. Clinical and radiographic follow-up was available in both cases. The excised cartilage flaps were examined histopathologically and showed the same characteristics as cartilage flaps from dogs of large breeds prone to developing osteochond

Immunophenotypic and cytomorphologic subclassification of T-cell lymphoma in the boxer breed.

The boxer breed is at high risk for developing lymphoma and, in contrast to the general canine population, is predisposed to the T-cell variant of the disease. The purpose of this study was to more accurately classify lymphoma in this breed. Clinical, cytomorphologic and immunophenotypic data were examined in 43 boxers with lymphoma. Twenty-five cases were collected prospectively and a further 18 cases were obtained retrospectively. Lymphomas were classified as multicentric (n=29), mediastinal (n=6) and intestinal (n=8). Of the 40 immunophenotyped samples, 34 (85%) were T-cell, 5 (12.5%) were
