[Radiological and clinical aspects of bronchogenic lung cysts: 4 case reports].

Bronchogenic lung cysts are exceptional. We report four cases which raised a problem of differential diagnosis. Our patients included four w … rmed for the case with an air-filled cavity and tumorectomy for the other cases. Pathology reported bronchogenic cyst in all cases. The radiological and clinical presentations observed in patients with bronchogenic lung cysts, with or without tracheobronchial communication, are polymorphous, often raising problems of differential diagnosis.

[Surgical treatment of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst in the adult: a report of 10 cases].

The mediastinal bronchogenic cyst is one of rare congenital foregut anomalies, with low frequency and usually asymptomatic. When secondary infection develops, it rapidly increases in size and may compress the respiratory system, and cause acute respiratory distress, in that condition, emergency surgical intervention will be necessary. After operation which includes a complete cystectomy or a partial resection of the cyst, the prognosis is good. It is difficult to differentiate the bronchogenic cyst from the esophageal cyst on the basis of clinical examination. Correct diagnosis depends on the …

Bronchogenic Cyst at the Terminal Ileum Presenting as an Enteric Duplication: A Case Report.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital foregut malformations most often found in the mediastinum or lung parenchyma. Abdominal locations are exceedingly rare and most commonly found in the left retroperitoneum. They may mimic other intra-abdominal masses and pose a preoperative diagnostic challenge. A 17-year-old female presented with 4 days of diffuse, mild abdominal pain. Ultrasound and MRI identified a 5.5 × 3.8 × 3.1 cm unilocular, hypoechoic cyst adjacent to the terminal ileum at the ileocecal valve. Preoperative differential diagnoses included an ileal duplication cyst. Single-incision laparo…

Bronchogenic Cyst with Degeneration of the Adjacent Membranous Portion of the Trachea: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital, benign cystic lesions that develop in the mediastinum. Many patients are asymptomatic, and conservative observation is often chosen in clinical practice. However, delayed surgical resection following cyst enlargement and compression of the adjacent membranous portion of the trachea can result in perioperative challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who had been under observation for 10 years for an asymptomatic mediastinal mass. The mass enlarged gradually and caused persistent cough along with obstructive venti…

Case report: Two rare new cases of diaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts.

The bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a type of congenital anomaly that is most usually found in the mediastinum and lung, and rarely in the diaphragm. We report two cases of bronchogenic cysts originating from the left diaphragm. Case 1 involved a 50-year-old man who underwent computed tomography (CT) of the adrenal glands for hypertension, showing left adrenal changes. An adrenal CT at our hospital showed a space-occupying lesion above the left diaphragm. We performed a left-sided thoracotomy in the seventh intercostal space and found that the mass was entirely located in the diaphragm. Case 2 was a…

Endoscopic Ultrasound Through-the-Needle Biopsy for the Diagnosis of an Abdominal Bronchogenic Cyst.

A 57-year-old woman with epigastric pain was diagnosed with a 6-cm abdominal cystic lesion of unclear origin on cross-sectional imaging. End … d by "respiratory-type" epithelium with ciliated columnar cells, consistent with the diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst. Laparoscopic excision was performed, and the diagnosis was confirmed based on the findings of the surgical specimen. Abdominal bronchogenic cysts are extremely uncommon, and a definitive diagnosis is commonly obtained after the examination of surgi …

Resection of Bronchogenic Cysts in Symptomatic Versus Asymptomatic Patients: An Outcome Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The natural evolution of bronchogenic cysts (BCs) is unpredictable. Although most surgeons agree that symptomatic BCs should be resected, questions remain regarding the optimal management of asymptomatic mediastinal cysts. We present a case series of BCs to compare patients who underwent preventive operation with those who underwent surgical procedure after symptom onset. METHODS: This 15-year multicenter retrospective study included 114 patients (32 children and 82 adults). Data on clinical history, pathology, mean hospital stay, intraoperative and postoperative complications, an…

Palliative fenestration for a symptomatic subcarinal bronchogenic cyst by the prone position approach.

A complete excision is the most reliable therapy for bronchogenic cysts (BC) but is often accompanied by technical difficulties due to severe adhesions. An 83-year-old-woman with poorly controlled diabetes noted worsening upper abdominal pain after meals and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass in the subcarinal region, and she underwent a thoracoscopic prone position surgery. The cyst wall was found to have strictly adhered to the adjacent organs, and the lesion was not amenable to a complete excision. We performed a fenestration of the cyst wall w…

Video-assisted thoracic surgery for bronchogenic cysts: is this the surgical approach of choice?

OBJECTIVES: Although there is no consensus on the management of bronchogenic cyst, most surgeons advocate early removal, even in asymptomatic patients. To evaluate the feasibility and safety of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in the management of bronchogenic cysts and long-term follow-up, a retrospective analysis was performed. METHODS: From January 1995 to April 2013, we retrospectively reviewed the charts of 113 patients who underwent VATS resection of bronchogenic cysts in our institution. Resection of the bronchogenic cysts by VATS was initially performed in patients who had a cys…

Bronchogenic cyst of stomach: two cases report and review of the English literature.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are a rare clinical entity because of anomalism of foregut in the embryonic stage. They have been described mostly within the mediastinum and are uncommon reported arising from the stomach. In this article, we report two cases of BC of stomach identified by pathological examination after surgical resection. It is extremely difficult to make a definitive diagnosis preoperatively just based on imaging findings. Surgical resection may be indicated if malignancy is suspected, or the cyst is enlarging or infected or causing symptoms.

Retroperitoneoscopic and laparoscopic removal of periadrenally located bronchogenic cysts--a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts (BC) are rare clinical entities and may mimic an adrenal mass. Laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic approach is widely-used in adrenal surgery. However minimally-invasive resection of a periadrenally located BC has been reported rarely. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed has been performed using the following search strategy: bronchogenic cyst AND (adrenal OR retroperitoneal OR subdiaphragmatic). 18 BC being removed via minimally invasive approach have been found. Including our own case 7 were removed retroperitoneoscopically an…

A pitfall in the diagnosis of giant bronchogenic cyst presented as loculated pleural effusion.

Being considered as an uncommon congenital anomaly, pulmonary bronchogenic cyst requires surgical treatment due to its rarity and mortality especially in complicated forms. In the present paper, we are presenting a case report of a giant pulmonary bronchogenic cyst (18 cm × 15 cm × 10 cm) misdiagnosed with loculated pleural effusion. Because of unsuccessful treatment of tube thoracostomy, the patient was scheduled for left thoracotomy. Later giant pulmonary cyst was removed completely without any complications. Histopathology studies revealed a giant bronchogenic cyst with abscess formation.

Bronchogenic cysts as a cause of infantile stridor: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic lesions related to the upper airway are an unusual cause of infantile stridor. Such a lesion may exert a mass effect, w … rina. The mediastinal lesion was excised via an external approach. The histological diagnosis was a bronchogenic cyst. CONCLUSION: Bronchogenic cysts are a rare cause of infantile stridor, and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic cervical and mediastinal masses. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice.

Video-assisted mediastinoscopic resection of two bronchogenic cysts: a novel approach.

The treatment of bronchogenic cysts (BCs) is still controversial. Many authors advocate the complete surgical excision of cysts [by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or thoracotomy] to prevent their high rate of recurrence. Nevertheless, some recent works have attracted attention to a less invasive endoscopic management of benign mediastinal cysts. Here, we report a novel, safe, effective and minimally invasive mediastinoscopic technique used in the complete resection of two mediastinal BCs. We believe that this approach can be applied, with some restrictions: lesions located in the …

Laparoscopic excision of subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst occurring in the retroperitoneum: report of a case.

Although bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are benign congenital malformations usually occur in thoracic cavity, retroperitoneal location is extremely uncommon. We reported a case of BC occurred in the retroperitoneum, which was excised laparoscopically. A 64-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to the hospital because of submucosal tumor in the upper part of the stomach. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor located just distal to the esophagogastric junction. The abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a cystic mass located in contact with lesser curvature of the stomach…
