Bioconversion of C1-gases by mixotrophic co-cultures fermentation with C. carboxidivorans and C. beijerinkii.

The development of newfangled bioprocess strategies for the capture of C1-gases (CO and CO2) and their bioconversion into valuable products is currently one of the main focuses of research in order to achieve a more resilient world. This work analyses the viability of the co-culture C. carboxidivorans and C. beijerinkii to produce bioproducts (bioalcohols and organic acids) in mixotrophic conditions. In this way, the bioconversion of C1 gases (CO and CO2), in the presence of Fe0, using mixotrophic co-culture fermentation by C. carboxidivorans and C. beijerinkii, was evaluated, analyzing the in

Extraction of Lipids from Chlorella saccharophila Using High-Pressure Homogenization Followed by Three Phase Partitioning.

Commercial exploitation of microalgae for biofuel and food ingredients is hindered due to laborious extraction protocols and use of hazardous chemicals. Production of lipids in the microalga grown in modified BG11 medium was evaluated to arrive at the appropriate harvesting conditions. The use of three phase partitioning (TPP) as a green approach for extraction of lipids from Chlorella saccharophila was investigated. Cells disrupted by probe sonication were used for separation of lipids by TPP. The TPP-optimized conditions of 30 % ammonium sulfate, using slurry/t-butanol of 1:0.75 for 60 min a

[Increase in lipophilicity of enalaprilat by complexation with copper(II) or zinc(II) Ions].

Enalaprilat (H2L), which is the active metabolite of the pro-drug enalapril, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. Some side effects such as neurodegeneration and taste disorder can be related to copper or zinc deficiency, which would be caused by the metal complex formation of dianionic elalaprilat (L(2-)). For a better understanding of this phenomenon, we investigated the solution species of enalaprilat in the presence of copper(II) or zinc(II) ions by pH titration analysis with I=0.10 M (NaCl) at 25℃. The 1:1 complex formation constants (KML=[ML]/[M(2+)][L(2-)] M(-1)) of 10(7.4) fo

Role of some organic inhibitors on the oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide by oxygen in rainwater medium.

In August 2012, eight rainwater samples were collected and analyzed for pH and metal ions, viz., iron, copper, and manganese. The pH was within the range 6.84-7.65. The rate of oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide was determined using these rainwater samples as reaction medium. Kinetics was defined by the rate law: -d[S(IV)]/dt = R o = k o[S(IV)]], where k o is the first-order rate constant and R o is the rate of the reaction. The effect of two volatile organic compounds-ethanol and 2-butanol-was examined and found to inhibit the oxidation as defined by the rate law: k obs = k o/(1 + B [Inh])

Rapid tolerance and cross-tolerance as predictors of chronic tolerance and cross-tolerance.

Hypothermia and motor impairment (tilt-plane) tests were used to assess the phenomenon of rapid tolerance to ethanol and cross-tolerance to various alcohols, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates that differ in lipid:water partition coefficients. The hypothermic and motor impairment responses to ethanol were significantly reduced on day 2 in rats receiving ethanol (2 doses of 2 g/kg each for the hypothermia test and 2.3 and 1.7 g/kg for the tilt-plane test) 24 and 22 h earlier compared to the control group pretreated with saline. Ethanol pretreatment resulted in rapid cross-tolerance, on both test

Pyrrolidone carboxylyl peptidase in Streptococcus cremoris: dependence on an interaction with membrane components.

A study of the distribution of pyrrolidone carboxylyl peptidase (PCP) activity among cell fractions of Streptococcus cremoris HP revealed that this enzyme is associated with a particulate fraction, which mainly consists of membrane material. This location could only be established using a gentle nonmechanical method for the disruption of spheroplasts under the conditions of which intracellular marker enzymes are released. The effect of monovalent anions and treatments, which do not destroy covalent binding, suggests an association of the enzyme with surrounding structures determined by both hy

Flavin secretion of Clostridium acetobutylicum in a bioelectrochemical system - Is an iron limitation involved?

A flavin-based extracellular electron transfer mechanism (EET) has recently been described for the gram-positive Listeria monocytogenes. The gram-positive, solvent producing Clostridium acetobutylicum is a known flavin producer. Since flavin secretion in C. acetobutylicum can be triggered by a low-iron environment, the interaction of iron with an electrochemical system as well as the consequences for flavin production are investigated. It is shown that iron adsorbs onto the electrode's surface in the form of iron phosphorus compounds but that this iron is still bioavailable. Moreover, a shift

[The resolution of racemic sec-phenethyl alcohol on cellulose tribenzoate-based CSP: influence of different alcohols in the mobile phase].

Several primary and secondary alcohols (ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol) were used as the mobile phase components separately, to investigate their effects on the capacity factor and stereoselectivity of sec-phenethyl alcohol enantiomers on cellulose tribenzoate-based CSP. The chiral recognition mechanism for the enantiomeric aromatic alcohols studied may involve: (1) the aromatic portion of the solute may insert into a chiral cavity of the CSP through a hydrogen bonding interaction between the solute's alcoholic hydrogen and the ester carbonyl group on the CSP; (2) the mobile phase
