In California, suspected pesticide-related illnesses and suspected work-related illnesses and injuries are reportable conditions. On July 31, 1998, the Occupational Health Branch of the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) received a report from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) of a pesticide exposure incident in Fresno County involving 34 farm workers. Mebendazole (methyl-5-benzoylbenzimidazole-2-carbamate: Vermox), a broad spectrum anthelmintic, cured 22 (88%) children with symptomatic trichuriasis when given as a single 6-day course in a dosage of 100 mg twice daily. A further 3 (12%) were cured after a repeat 6-day course of therapy. Thus complete parasite eradication was achieved in all. The administration of an antidiarrheal agent, loperamide hydrochloride (Imodium), appeared to enhance the efficacy of mebendazole. Both drugs were well tolerated and completely free of any toxic effects.

After a single oral dosage of 40 mg thiophanate/kg in cattle, sheep and goats, the parent compound and its main metabolite: ethyl benzimidazol-1H-yl-2-carbamate (EBC) are evidenced in plasma by HPLC analysis for 60 to 72 hours. The rate of metabolic change of thiophanate into EBC is 34% in sheep, 52% in goats and 57% in cattle. At this dosage, thiophanate seems to be effective against Dicrocoelium in sheep. On the contrary, EBC is uneffective at 15 mg/kg while it seems undetectable in plasma at any time.

Within the framework of studying the influence of alterations of the connecting chain in the group of local anaesthetics a series of 24 compounds of 1-propoxymethyl-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl), 2-(1-piperidino)-, and 2-(1-perhydroazepinyl)-ethyl esters of o- and m-alkoxyphenylcarbamic acid were prepared. Studied compounds show a high index of relative local anaesthetic activity as compared to the standards cocaine and procaine, at a relatively low acute toxicity.
