Shape deformations of the basal ganglia in patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia: a cross-sectional evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the involvement of subcortical brain structures in the pathogenesis of classic trigeminal neuralgia (CTN), the details … to healthy controls. Besides, the patient group exhibited shape expansion in the head of the right caudate nucleus compared to healthy subjects. In addition, shape deformation in the head of the right caudate nucleus was positively associated with VAS score in CTN. CONCLUSION: The patients with CTN display shape alterations in the specific subregions of basal g …

Morphological development of the human fetal striatum during the second trimester.

The morphological development of the fetal striatum during the second trimester has remained poorly described. We manually segmented the striatum using 7.0-T MR images of the fetal specimens ranging from 14 to 22 gestational weeks. The global development of the striatum was evaluated by volume measurement. The absolute volume (Vabs) of the caudate nucleus (CN) increased linearly with gestational age, while the relative volume (Vrel) showed a quadratic growth. Both Vabs and Vrel of putamen increased linearly. Through shape analysis, the changes of local structure in developing striatum were spe…

Case report of anorexia nervosa showing periventricular gliosis at autopsy.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and extreme weight loss. It has the highest mortality ra … significant. Severe fibrillary gliosis was prominent around periventricular regions, including the caudate nucleus and nucleus accumbens, which are associated with cognition, emotion, and emotional behaviors via the dopaminergic pathways. These findings indicate that prolonged malnutrition in AN patients may induce brain damage, leading to dysfunction of the rew …

FDG PET brain scan demonstrated glucose hypometabolism of bilateral caudate nuclei and putamina in a patient with chorea-acanthocytosis.

Chorea-acanthocytosis is 1 type of neuroacanthocytosis that is a group of rare, hereditary neurodegenerative disorders. We presented a brain FDG PET finding of a 31-year-old woman with chorea-acanthocytosis. The images demonstrated significant hypometabolism in bilateral caudate nuclei and putamina. The finding of FDG PET is more prominent than that of MRI. Another interesting observation is the mildly increased FDG uptake in pituitary gland, although its relationship with the disease is unclear.

[Pathogenetic mechanisms and therapy of a subclinical form of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome].

The results of clinical, experimental psychological and biochemical studies of patients with a subclinical form of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome suggested a reduction of the inhibitory influence of the caudate nucleus due to incomplete genetic defect of Hg-PRTase and related disorders of other types of metabolism in the area of basal ganglia as one of the links of pathogenesis. The pathogenetic therapy is based on maintaining high activity of Hg-PRTase by dietary treatment with limited intake of exogenous purines.

On the learning of addictive behavior: Sensation-seeking propensity predicts dopamine turnover in dorsal striatum.

We asked if sensation-seeking is linked to premorbid personality characteristics in patients with addictive disorders, or the characteristic … y positron emission tomography of 18 men with tracer fluorodopa (FDOPA). We detected a site in left caudate nucleus where the volume of distribution of FDOPA-derived metabolites correlated negatively with FDOPA metabolite turnover, consistent with decreased metabolite breakdown in highly sensation-seeking subjects. High rates of sensation-seeking attenuated the d …

The effect of distress on the balance between goal-directed and habit networks in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The classical cognitive-behavioral theory of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) holds that compulsions are performed to reduce distress tha … luated through cortisol levels, blood pressure, and anxiety ratings. Functional connectivity of the caudate nucleus and posterior putamen was assessed using seed region analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, which are hubs of the goal-directed and habit network, respectively. Stress induction increased blood pressure and psychologic …

Neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion alters the dopamine content in the limbic regions in postpubertal rats.

The neonatal ventral Hippocampus (nVH) lesion in rats has been used as a model to test the hypothesis that early neurodevelopmental abnormalities lead to behavioral changes putatively linked to schizophrenia. The schizophrenic patients tend to social isolation. In addition, considerable evidence from behavioral and neurochemistry studies strongly implicate the dopamine (DA) system and the medial part of the prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the pathophysiology of the social isolation syndrome. In order to assess effects of the postweaning social isolation (pwSI) on the DA system of the nVH lesions,

Regional analyses revealed that this association was driven by the caudate nucleus. Furthermore, greater caudate compared to putaminal involvement, reflected by a higher putaminal/caudate uptake ratio, was related to longer disease duration and increased mortality. Impulsivity in ADHD and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review of Gray and White Matter Variations.

Introduction: Impulsivity is one of the overlapping symptoms common to borderline personality disorder (BPD) and attention deficit hyperacti … sivity. In contrast, impulsivity associated with ADHD was associated with structural changes in the caudate nucleus and frontal-striatal pathways. Despite the overlapping symptoms of impulsivity, the neurobiological mechanisms appeared to differ between the two disorders. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the distinct neurostructural correlates of impulsivity …
