The concave versus convex approach for minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion for thoracolumbar degenerative scoliosis.

We retrospectively reviewed patient charts to compare the approach-related (convex versus concave) neurological complications and magnitude of correction in patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). It is yet to be quantitatively determined if correction of adult degenerative scoliosis from either side of the curve apex using a LLIF results in a reduction in complications and/or improved corrective ability. The inclusion criteria for this study were patients who underwent a LLIF for adult degenerative thoracolumbar scoliosis and had the LLIF prior to any other supplemental pr

The retrosigmoid intradural suprameatal approach to posterior cavernous sinus: microsurgical anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: The retrosigmoid intradural suprameatal approach includes the standard retrosigmoid suboccipital route with drilling of the petrous bone above and anterior of the internal auditory meatus, allowing for exposure of the trigeminal nerve within the Meckel's cave and of the middle fossa. In this study, the authors analyzed the potential use of an extended variation of the suprameatal route to approach the posterior cavernous sinus for microsurgery of, e.g., petroclival meningiomas and trigeminal schwannomas. METHODS: The microsurgical anatomy of the retrosigmoid suprameatal approach wa

Histoplasmosis in Africa: a review.

Classical histoplasmosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, and African histoplasmosis caused by H. capsulatum var. duboisii are both endemic in Africa. In South Africa, only classical histoplasmosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum is known to occur and cases are seen frequently. It occurs sporadically in several other African countries. Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum is known to occur naturally in caves inhabited by bats in some parts of South Africa, namely, Transvaal and Cape province, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. Outbreaks of histoplasmosis have been repor…

Asperger syndrome, alexithymia and perception of sleep.

SCUBA diving explorations of three islands off Dumont d'Urville Station at the coast of Adélie Land, East Antarctica, enabled the observation of marine ice caves. Sampling in this unusual habitat yielded a total of three species of Mysidae, altogether previously poorly known or unknown to science. Pseudommakryotroglodytum sp. nov. is described, based on the structure of the antennal scale, telson and on cornea-like lateral portions set off against the main body of eyeplates. Mysidetesilligi is re-established at species level after almost a century in synonymy. Re-descriptions are provided for …

Reconcilable differences: Using retrospective photogrammetry to bridge the divide between analogue and digital site data collected during long-term excavation projects.

Over the last 30 years, high-resolution site documentation has rapidly developed, with analogue drawings and film photography being replaced with high-precision digital recordings. Today, most archaeological field data sets are produced using digital tools that store spatial and visual information in various digital formats directly, i.e., born-digital. A fully digital workflow makes the process of combining, comparing, and integrating field datasets quicker, easier, and potentially more analytically powerful. However, at sites where both analogue and born-digital data sets have been produced,

Evolutionary modifications of Astyanax larval prey capture (LPC) in a dark environment.

Feeding strategies of an organism depend on the multimodal sensory processing that most efficiently integrates available visual, chemosensory, and/or mechanoreceptive cues as part of their environmental adaptation. The blind cavefish morph of Astyanax mexicanus has developed sensory-dependent behaviors to find food more efficiently than their eyed, surface-morph counterparts while in darkness. In the absence of light, adult cavefish have evolved enhanced behaviors, such as vibration attraction behavior (VAB), and changes in feeding angle. Here, we identified evolved differences in cavefish lar

Bartonella and Rickettsia Infections in Haematophagous Spinturnix myoti Mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) and their Bat Host, Myotis myotis (Yangochiroptera: Vespertilionidae), from Poland.

Hematophagous Spinturnix myoti mites and their host, the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), were tested for the presence of Bartonella spp., Rickettsia spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In total, Bartonella spp. DNA was amplified in 28% of 134 mite pools and in 25% of 59 bats tested by PCR targeting a fragment of citrate synthase gltA gen. Adult mites were at least threefold more frequently infected compared to immature stages. The overall infection prevalence among mite pools from cave-dwelling bats was higher than for those collected from attic shelters. Three distinct genotypes wer

A new cavernicolous sand fly from Cambodia: Idiophlebotomus nicolegerae n. sp. (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cambodia is an area considered free of leishmaniasis and consequently little is known of its' phlebotomine sand fly fauna. Only six species of sand flies have previously been recorded: Sergentomyia barraudi, Sergentomyia pertubans, Sergentomyia bailyi, Sergentomyia silvatica, Sergentomyia khawi and Grassomyia indica and none belonging to the genus Phlebotomus. During an inventory carried out in Cambodia, we caught a new species, belonging to the genus Idiophlebotomus, in a cave. We describe the new species in this paper and also report three other new species for the country: Sergentomyia anod

A Case of Imported Leptospirosis: Rhabdomyolysis and Severe Hyperbilirubinemia in a Traveler Returning From Puerto Rico.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis transmitted through human contact with the urine or fecal material of infected animals. Here, we report the case of a young male who presented with hyperbilirubinemia and rhabdomyolysis after returning from Puerto Rico which was confirmed to be severe leptospirosis. An 18-year-old Caucasian male was admitted due to a four-day history of jaundice, fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, dark urine, and pain in his calves. Two weeks before, in Puerto Rico, he swam in caves and at the shoreline in an area recently impacted by a hurricane. Laboratory studies demonstr…

Subsistence and Behavioral Variation in the Neolithic Meuse Basin (BE): Insights From Dental Collections.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the Neolithic subsistence and population diversity in the 4th and 3rd millennia bce within Belgium's Meuse basin. The main objectives are to shed light on lifeways and cultural differences among groups known from collective cave burials. It focuses on dietary habits and behavioral practices through dental anthropology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Commingled dental collections from four cave sites (Ben Ahin, La Faucille, Maurenne, and Bois Madame) were analyzed. A total of 1916 permanent teeth were examined for various oral conditions, including caries, ca

Genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity drive troglomorphic character development in European cavefish.

The Aach cave loach (Barbatula barbatula), a recently discovered member of the Nemacheilidae family, offers a unique opportunity to understand the mechanisms underlying evolutionary change. In a common garden experiment, we reared groups of laboratory-bred cave, surface, and hybrid loach under different light conditions. Troglomorphic characters varied significantly among the fish, influenced to a different extent by parental origin and light conditions. Cavefish progeny consistently exhibited smaller eyes, lighter pigmentation, longer barbels, and larger olfactory epithelia than surface fish,

Craniofacial skeleton of MEXICAN tetra (Astyanax mexicanus): As a bone disease model.

A small fresh water fish, the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is a novel animal model in evolutionary developmental biology. The existence of morphologically distinct surface and cave morphs of this species allows simultaneous comparative analysis of phenotypic changes at different life stages. The cavefish harbors many favorable constructive traits (i.e., large jaws with an increased number of teeth, neuromast cells, enlarged olfactory pits and excess storage of adipose tissues) and regressive traits (i.e., reduced eye structures and pigmentation) which are essential for cave adaptation. A

Retrosigmoid Intradural Suprameatal-Inframeatal Approach for Complete Surgical Removal of a Giant Recurrent Vestibular Schwannoma with Severe Petrous Bone Involvement: Technical Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of giant vestibular schwannomas with severe petrous bone involvement remains challenging due to the high risk of complications. The retrosigmoid intradural suprameatal-inframeatal approach (RISIA) allows for safe exposure extending from Meckel's cave to the petrous internal carotid artery (ICA). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 27-year-old man presented with recurrence of a giant vestibular schwannoma (4.5 cm) invading Meckel's cave and the left petrous ICA. Symptoms included complete left facial palsy and hearing loss due to tumor invasion and previous operations, as well as

Primary malignant lymphoma of the trigeminal region treated with rapid infusion of high-dose MTX and radiation: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Extra-axial primary CNS lymphoma, considered rare, mainly arise in the white matter of the brain. Though the tumor responds well to radiation and chemotherapy, the prognosis of primary CNS lymphoma remains poor. We report a case of primary lymphoma of Meckel's cave mimicking a trigeminal schwannoma radiographically, which achieved complete remission through use of rapid high-dose MTX therapy and radiation therapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, a 55-year-old Japanese male, presented left trigeminal neuralgia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass lesion in the left side

Disruption of carotenoid metabolism in cavefish via loss of beta-carotene oxygenase 2a.

Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient that supports vision, immunity, and development, yet excess vitamin A can be toxic. Most vertebrates … lerate carotenoid accumulation and may benefit from elevated carotenoid stores in nutrient-variable caves. Our findings reveal that the vitamin A regulatory system is evolutionarily flexible and provide a framework for understanding how animals balance essential nutrient thresholds in extreme environments. VIDEO ABSTRACT.
