Nanozyme-based therapeutic strategies for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent chronic autoimmune disease that leads to severe joint damage and disability. Conventional treatment options are limited by their efficacy and side effect profiles. Nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities, offer a novel therapeutic approach for RA. This review summarizes recent advances in nanozyme-based treatments, focusing on their antioxidant and immunomodulatory roles in mitigating RA. We discuss various nanozymes, including those based on cerium, iron, manganese, silver, copper, platinum, rhodium, and multi-metallic nanozymes, which mim…

A highly active Ca/Cu/YCeO2-TiO2 catalyst for the transient reduction of NO with CO and naphthalene under oxidizing conditions.

The transient combustion of biomass leads to the evolution of a variety of pollutants (NO, CO, organic compounds, and many others) that can react with each other on a suitable catalyst to generate compounds of lower toxicity. Here, the transient reduction of NO with CO and naphthalene in the presence of oxygen was studied on a Ca/Cu/YCeO2-TiO2 catalyst. Response surface methodology was used to identify the optimum amounts of calcium, copper, and cerium. The optimized Ca/Cu/YCeO2-TiO2 catalyst was then extensively studied and characterized. The coupling of yttrium-stabilized ceria with TiO2 pro…

Di-metal-doped sulfur resisting perovskite catalysts for highly efficient H2-SCR of NO.

Lanthanide perovskite catalysts doped with limited palladium (to improve activity) and cerium (to improve sulfur resistance) were prepared using sol-gel method. In different B sites, lanthanide perovskites were studied at harsh conditions for H2 selective catalytic reduction of NO. The activity sequence was as follows: LaCeMnPd > LaCeCoPd > LaCeFePd. LaCeMnPd had a high NO conversion of 96.6% at only 150 °C. And it also had a surprising SO2 resistance in different SO2 concentrations. After cutting out SO2, NO conversion recovered rapidly to its original level, indicating that the slight deacti…

Synthesis, spectral, and anti-microbial studies of thioiminium iodides and amine hydrochlorides.

To avoid the undesired deprotonation during the addition of organolithium and organomagnesium reagents to ketones, the thioiminium salts, easily prepared from lactams and amides are converted into 2,2-disubstituted and 2-monosubstituted amines by reaction with simple nucleophiles such as organocerium and organocopper reagents. The reaction of thioiminium iodides with organocerium reagents derived by transmetalation of corresponding lithium reagents with anhydrous cerium(III) chloride has been investigated. These thioiminium iodides act as good electrophiles and accept alkylceriums towards bisa…

Persistent Luminescence in Non-Eu2+-Doped Compounds: A Review.

During the past few decades, the research on persistent luminescent materials has focused mainly on Eu2+-doped compounds. However, the yearly number of publications on non-Eu2+-based materials has also increased steadily. By now, the number of known persistent phosphors has increased to over 200, of which over 80% are not based on Eu2+, but rather, on intrinsic host defects, transition metals (manganese, chromium, copper, etc.) or trivalent rare earths (cerium, terbium, dysprosium, etc.). In this review, we present an overview of these non-Eu2+-based persistent luminescent materials and their …

Restrictive cardiomyopathy in India: the story of a vanishing mystery.

Endomyocardial fibrosis is the most common restrictive cardiomyopathy observed world wide. The disease occurs in its classical endemic form in the selected coastal belt in Kerala, India, affecting young people of lower socioeconomic families, and attracting worldwide attention. Geographical identification of high levels of cerium in the soil samples of this coastal belt generated a new "geochemical hypothesis" for endocardial injury. Endocardial calcification, a pathognomonic, but less common feature of the disease, may share the same pathobiology of vascular and valvar calcification occurring…

In vivo measurement of radius calcium/phosphorus ratio by X-ray absorptiometry.

We describe a new method for assessing the skeletal Ca/P ratio in vivo using X-ray absorptiometry. By placing cerium (Ce) and samarium (Sm) filters in the X-ray beam from a commercial X-ray source (Norland), mean photon energies of 39 and 89 keV were obtained. The instrument was designed to take measurements of the forearm, at a site located at the distal 1/3 of the radius. The system was calibrated with three bone phantoms: Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ca(HPO4)(H2O)2 and Ca(HPO4)2(H2O)). The precision for measuring the Ca/P ratio in the human radius was 2.3% CV for a skin dose to the forearm ranging from…

Cascade-Therapeutic Nanozyme Hydrogel Mediates Hypoxia Alleviation and Angiogenesis Promotion To Accelerate Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic wounds exhibit prolonged inflammation and excessive oxidative stress, impairing tissue repair. Chronic hypoxia arises from vascular dysfunction and metabolic dysregulation, creating a pathological cycle of oxidative damage, defective angiogenesis, and persistent inflammation. To address these challenges, we develop the multifunctional rosmarinic acid-cerium nanozyme (RA-Ce NP) hydrogel composites designed for diabetic wound therapy. The system integrates RA-Ce NPs, phenylboronic acid-grafted poly-l-lysine, and oxidized hyaluronic acid into a dynamically crosslinked hydrogel network th…

Intravesical delivery of mucoadhesive and tumor-selective-penetrating nanozymes for enhancing the PDT of bladder cancer.

Intravesical photodynamic therapy (PDT) emerges as a promising modality for bladder cancer treatment, yet its efficacy is often curtailed by weak muco-adhesion, poor muco-penetration, low tumor-targeting and intra-tumoral oxygen scarcity. In this work, we introduce a drug delivery system leveraging cerium oxide (CeO2) nanozymes as the core, polyarginine peptides R11 as the tumor-targeting ligands, and indocyanine green (ICG) as the photosensitizers, with the latter two components assembled on the particle surface. Intravesical ICG@R11-CeO2 nanoparticles displayed enhanced mucoadhesive, mucus-p…

Evolution of Strategies Toward the Total Synthesis of Aleutianamine.

A full account of our total synthesis of aleutianamine (1) is disclosed. An initial α-thioketone derivatization approach was thwarted by a f … of aleutianamine including the challenging bridgehead sulfide. Following construction of the core, cerium-mediated oxidative amination and palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative pinacol-type rearrangement enabled chemoselective introduction of the C10 aniline and alkenyl bromide, leading to the total synthesis of aleutianamine.

Revealing the Dynamic Behavior of Active Sites on Acid-Functionalized CeO2 Catalysts for NOx Reduction.

Unraveling the dynamics of the active sites upon CeO2-based catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH3-SC … ted acid sites significantly affects the NOx removal. Moreover, acid functionalization promotes the cerium species cycle between Ce4+ and Ce3+ for the NOx reduction. This work is critical to deeply understanding the natural properties of active sites, and it also provides new insights into the mechanism for NH3-SCR over CeO2-based catalysts.

[Five-ring analogs of nifedipine. 3. Synthesis and reactions of 1,4-dihydropyridines with 4-(4-nitro-5-imidazolyl)-substituents].

In the Hantzsch pyridine synthesis the 4-nitro-5-imidazolylcarbaldehydes 4 react with methyl 3-aminocrotonate or 3-aminocrotononitrile in acetic acid to yield the 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHP) 5 and 6. The corresponding pyridines 7 and 8 are obtained by oxidation with cerium(IV) or chromium(VI), respectively. Reduction of the nitro group in 7 with iron in acetic acid leads to the lactames 9, while from 8a the imidazolylamine 10 is isolated. Compound 8a reacts with dithionite to yield the cyclic amidine 11. Irradiation of the DHP 5 and 6b with UV-A light affords the 4-nitroso-5-imidazolyl-pyridine…

Glucose-6-phosphatase is present in normal and pre-eclamptic placental trophoblasts: ultrastructural enzyme-histochemical evidence.

The purpose of the present study was to localize glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activity in the human placenta at various gestational stages and to compare them to pre-eclamptic placenta activity. Ultrastructural enzyme-histochemical analysis of G6Pase was performed using cerium and lead as capturing agents. Precipitates indicative of G6Pase activity were observed in the endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope of the syncytiotrophoblasts in near-term placenta obtained from women with normal pregnancies. In placenta taken from women with severe pre-eclampsia, the localization pattern, en…

Ultracytochemical demonstration of ouabain-sensitive, K(+)-dependent, p-nitrophenylphosphatase (Na-K ATPase) activity in cat facial nerve.

Ouabain-sensitive, K(+)-dependent, p-nitrophenylphosphatase (K-NPPase) is the second dephosphorylative property of the Na-K ATPase complex. Localization of its activity in the horizontal portion of the facial nerve in 11 normal cats was studied ultracytochemically using a cerium-based method. The fine granular reaction product of the K-NPPase activity was observed on the cytoplasmic side of the axolemma of the axon cylinder. Enzyme activity was also detected on the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane of Schmidt-Lanterman incisures and nodes of Ranvier. No reaction product was detected on t…

Ceo2 /Cus Nanoplates Electroreduce Co2 to Ethanol with Stabilized Cu+ Species.

Copper-based electrocatalysts effectively produce multicarbon (C2+ ) compounds during the electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2 RR). However, big challenges still remain because of the chemically unstable active sites. Here, cerium is used as a self-sacrificing agent to stabilize the Cu+ of CuS, due to the facile Ce3+ /Ce4+ redox. CeO2 -modified CuS nanoplates achieve high ethanol selectivity, with FE up to 54% and FEC2+ ≈ 75% in a flow cell. Moreover, in situ Raman spectroscopy and in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that the stable Cu+ species promote CC coupling step unde…

Astrocyte-Targeted Nanotherapeutics Modulate Iron Homeostasis in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy by Restoring the Astrocytic Trafficking Hub Function.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is increasingly prevalent, and it is characterized by frequent recurrence and complex etiology. Aberrant ceruloplasmin (Cp) localization at the astrocytic endfeet, coupled with oxidative stress-induced dysregulation of iron regulatory proteins, is a central trigger of the iron dyshomeostasis that drives CAA progression. However, therapeutic strategies that specifically target iron transport regulation in astrocytes remain lacking. Here, we develop lattice-expanded Au/CeO2 with strong antioxidant capacity validated by DFT calculations. Its mesoporous architectu

Turning Color Confusion to Clarity: A Layered Ce-Based Nanozyme Drives Rapid Wavelength Transition for Discriminative Detection of Nerve Agent during Decontamination.

Organophosphate (OP)-based nerve agents (NAs) pose serious risks to human life, demanding materials that facilitate rapid decontamination and reliable detection with selectivity. Ce-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising candidates due to their high reactivity. However, their intrinsic yellow color misleads detection of NAs such as paraoxon, which releases yellow p-nitrophenol. Here, we report a bioinspired 2D metal-organic layer (MOL) construct, Ce-BTB-MOL, a phosphotriesterase nanozyme with abundant binding sites that not only facilitate rapid degradation of paraox
