Surgical trends in Bankart repair: an analysis of data from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery certification examination.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic Bankart repair emerged in the 1990s as a minimally invasive alternative to open repair. The optimal technique of surgical stabilization of the unstable glenohumeral joint remains controversial. HYPOTHESIS: A review of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) data would show a trend toward an increasing number of arthroscopic versus open Bankart procedures. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: A query of the ABOS database for all cases of open or arthroscopic Bankart repair from 2003 through 2008 was performed, as the CPT (Current Procedural

Piloting of a surveillance system for acute respiratory diseases: COVID-19 monitoring using Sick Leave Certificates.

With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and the decreasing significance of official reporting figures, the Lower Saxony State Health Office developed and tested a new indicator: the "7-day sick leave incidence". Unlike previous surveillance indicators, it is intended for syndromic surveillance of COVID-19. This article explains the methodological development as well as its benefits, possible applications, and limitations. The indicator is based on the weekly number of sick leaves due to COVID-19 per 100,000 health insurance members entitled to sickness benefits (KGbM) of the AOK Lower Saxony (AOK

Mortality incidence estimation using federal death certificate and natality data with an application to Tay-Sachs disease.

For confidentiality reasons, US federal death certificate data are incomplete with regards to the dates of birth and death for the decedents, making calculation of total lifetime of a decedent impossible and thus estimation of mortality incidence difficult. This paper proposes the use of natality data and an imputation-based method to estimate age-specific mortality incidence rates in the face of this missing information. By utilizing previously determined probabilities of birth, a birth date and death date are imputed for every decedent in the dataset. Thus, the birth cohort of each individua

Specific causes of death in patients with bullous pemphigoid as measured by death certificate data: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mortality rates in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) are higher than those in age-matched counterparts. However, the specific causes of death in BP subjects have not been evaluated systematically. OBJECTIVES: We sought to characterize the causes of death in patients with BP as recorded by death certificate and to compare these with death data for age- and location-matched control subjects. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort analysis conducted in a large tertiary referral center. Twenty-seven participants who had a confirmed antemortem diagnosis of BP, were residents of

Using the economics of certification to improve the safety and quality of male circumcision in developing countries: three models of implementation.

Although male circumcision (MC) has been a widespread practice in some regions, while relatively new in others, it has recently ascended in … , I borrow from a classic economics approach and advocate a new application in the form of provider certification. Building on some experience in the healthcare systems and economic rationale of high-income counties, I explore the potential for certifying providers of MC in low-income countries and compare and contrast three models of implementation: government …

Association of Cancer Care Quality Certification With Survival Across Multiple Cancer Types: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan.

Cancer remains a major global health burden. Taiwan launched the Cancer Care Quality Certification (CCQC) program in 2008; however, comprehensive evaluations of its association with survival across multiple cancer types remain limited. A total of 294,323 patients diagnosed with one of eight cancer types between 2011 and 2017 were identified from the Taiwan Cancer Registry Database. Overall survival among patients treated at certified versus non-certified hospitals was compared using Cox proportional hazards models incorporating a hospital-level shared frailty to account for institutional heter…

Exploratory 6-year prediction of LTCI certification using KCL data: A decision tree analysis in a retrospective observational study.

Amid the progression of an aging society, it is essential to develop a long-term predictive model capable of distinguishing between older adults with high and low risks of requiring Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) services. However, previous models were limited in that they could not simultaneously examine multiple and heterogeneous relationships, despite the fact that risk factors interact in complex and multifaceted ways. In addition, the existing model was restricted to a short-term prediction span. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for LTCI certification using Kihon Checklist …
