[Traumatic subluxation of the cervical spine in an 1-year-old alpaca mare].

A 1-year-old alpaca mare was presented due to lateral deviation of the cervical spine which had been present for a period of 2 weeks. Based on the previous report, a traumatic event was assumed. Feed and water intake were unremarkable, the gait was altered due to slight ataxic movements in all 4 limbs. The animal showed no further neurological deficits on initial presentation. Radiographs revealed a displacement of the cervical vertebrae to the left as part of a subluxation of the articular processes of the cervical vertebrae C4 and C5. During the course of conservative treatment with pain med…

Somatosensory-Auditory Processing of the Fifth Cervical Nerve in Tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spinal nerve projections influence auditory responses and play a role in the pathology of tinnitus. OBJECTIVES: The … patients still had benefit. Less hearing at 1 kHz together with a large spur in front of the fifth cervical vertebrae forecasted a beneficial effect of the C5 therapy on tinnitus at 7 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Treating cervical spine complaints can lessen tinnitus. Therapy of C5 resulted in less tinnitus for 30% of the tinnitus patients. However, selection of tinnitus p …

Reduced T-cell receptor CD3zeta-chain protein and sustained CD3epsilon expression at the site of mycobacterial infection.

Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis is an enigmatic theropod dinosaur from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) of Morocco, originally based on a few isolated cervical vertebrae. Ever since its original description, both its taxonomic validity and systematic affinities were contentious. Originally considered to represent its own family, Sigilmassasauridae, the genus has variously been suggested to represent a carcharodontosaurid, an ornithischian, and, more recently, a spinosaurid. Here we describe new remains referrable to this taxon and re-evaluate its taxonomic status and systematic affinities. …

Acute respiratory compromise associated with flexed cervical traction after C2 fractures.

STUDY DESIGN: Acute respiratory compromise is occasionally observed in a subgroup of patients with upper spinal injuries involving the C2 vertebrae. A retrospective review was performed to identify fracture types and risk factors for early respiratory deterioration following injury to the upper cervical spine. OBJECTIVES: To examine the frequency of respiratory complications encountered following traction manipulation of specific upper cervical spinal injuries involving the C2 vertebrae. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Major complications related to cervical skeletal traction are uncommon. Respi

C7 vertebra homeotic transformation in domestic dogs - are Pug dogs breaking mammalian evolutionary constraints?

The number of cervical vertebrae in mammals is almost constant at seven, regardless of their neck length, implying that there is selection against variation in this number. Homebox (Hox) genes are involved in this evolutionary mammalian conservation, and homeotic transformation of cervical into thoracic vertebrae (cervical ribs) is a common phenotypic abnormality when Hox gene expression is altered. This relatively benign phenotypic change can be associated with fatal traits in humans. Mutations in genes upstream of Hox, inbreeding and stressors during organogenesis can also cause cervical rib…

The effects of bite line deviation on lateral cervical radiographs when upper cervical joint dysfunction exists: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the impact of inconsistent bite line positioning during pre and post lateral cervical radiographic examinations and to suggest certain additional imaging studies if the bite line cannot be consistently maintained. METHODS: Radiographic measurements of relative flexion and extension in the atlantal-occipital (AO) and atlantal-axial (AA) joints were taken from neutral lateral cervical and cervical flexion and extension radiographs of 20 subjects. RESULTS: The average relative AO flexion was -0.9 degrees and 12.0 degrees of extension, while the average relative AA flexio

High-resolution CT scanning in the evaluation of cervical spine fractures: comparison with plain film examinations.

Forty-nine patients with cervical spine fractures were identified among 160 patients who underwent CT of the cervical spine for blunt trauma. Although there was a high index of suspicion on the plain film interpretation, as well as a large percentage of false positives, many fractures were found on CT that were not suggested, even in retrospect, on the plain radiographs. Of the 136 fractures ultimately identified in these patients, CT detected 135 (99%) while only 64 (47%) were seen or suspected on the initial screening radiographs. At first glance, this might appear to discredit the plain fil

X-linked skeletal dysplasia with mental retardation.

A syndrome compatible with an X-linked trait is described, affecting four male cousins in three sibships. The body had skeletal anomalies, including short stature, ridging of the metopic suture, fusion of cervical vertebrae, thoracic hemivertebrae, scoliosis, sarcral hypoplasia and short middle phalanges. In addition, they had moderate developmental retardation, and abducens palsies. Three of the four had glucose intolerance, and one was born with an imperforate anus. Of five female obligate carriers studied, three had fusion of cervical vertebrae, three had some shortening of the middle phala…

[Anterior and posterior stabilization after resection of thyroid carcinoma destroying several cervical segments].

CASE REPORT: Authors report a case of thyroid gland carcinoma. The tumor had metastases into the CV-VI-VII vertebras. Through an anterior approach, they removed the malignant tumor together with the bodies of the affected cervical vertebras and a two stage combined (anterior and posterior) cervical instrumentation was performed. The anterior fusion was carried out with iliac crest bone grafting and plate fixation. After four years the patient is alive and well, without symptoms of tumor recurrence or neurologic deficiency. The ventral fusion is stable. CONCLUSIONS: Authors present a case of a

Cervical digit in a child: A case report.

BACKGROUND: A "digit-like" bone is a rare developmental anomaly that is usually seen in the pelvic or thoracic regions. Such an anomaly in the cervical spine is extremely rare and few cases have been reported. We present a patient with an anomalous bone posterior to a cervical vertebra. The patient was admitted to our hospital with a gradually growing hard neck mass and esthetic complaints. Physical examination, radiographs, reconstructed computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a digit-like bone posterior to the cervical spine. The patient was diagnosed with a "cervical di

The Chiari II malformation: Part IV. The hindbrain deformity.

Computed tomography successfully delineates the multiple components of the Chiari II malformation at the craniocervical junction, the hindbrain, and the cervical spinal cord. These include wide foramen magnum and upper cervical spinal canal; incomplete fusions of the posterior arches of C1 and lower cervical vertebrae; cascading protrusions of vermis, fourth ventricle, medulla, and cervical cord into the spinal canal; cervicomedullary "kinking"; anterior displacement and sequential sagittal compression of each protrusion by the protrusions posterior to it; compression of all protrusions by the…

Cervical Flexion Myelopathy Eleven Years after a Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

We herein describe a 37-year-old man who developed cervical flexion myelopathy 11 years after suffering a cervical spinal cord injury. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging 11 years after the accident demonstrated atrophy and hyperintense lesions at the C6 and C7 levels in the cervical cord with an abnormal alignment of the vertebrae. In the neck flexion position, an anterior shift of the cervical cord was evident. Our patient's condition suggests that an abnormal alignment of the cervical spine and spinal cord injury due to a traumatic accident could be risk factors in the subsequent developmen

Cause of death in judicial hanging: a review and case study.

The cause of death in judicial hanging is controversial and often attributed to 'hangman's fracture' of the second cervical vertebra. Research has shown that such fractures are the exception in judicial hangings and the cause of death can be attributed to a range of head and neck injuries, particularly compression or rupture of the vertebral and carotid arteries leading to cerebral ischaemia. The rapidity of loss of consciousness and death is highly dependent upon knot positioning and the length of drop which has varied through the history of hanging as a capital punishment in the UK. The skel
