Complex Medium-Chain Triglycerides Mitigate Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus Infection in Piglets by Enhancing Anti-Inflammation, Antioxidation, and Intestinal Barrier Function.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), a highly contagious enteric disease caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, leading to high mortality in newborn piglets and significant economic losses in the swine industry. The shortage of effective PED vaccines emphasizes the need to explore potent natural compounds for therapeutic intervention. It has been shown that glycerol monolaurate (GML) effectively inhibits PEDV replication in vivo and in vitro. Further investigation is needed to assess whether complex medium-chain triglycerides

Positive nasal Staphylococcus aureus polymerase chain reaction assay is not sensitive in predicting concurrent or subsequent Staphylococcus aureus infection in critically ill patients.

Staphylococcal infection is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Using data from 16,681 patients who had a nasal Staphylococcus aureus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Royal Perth Hospital between March 2006 and September 2016, this retrospective cohort study assessed whether nasal S. aureus colonisation on admission to an ICU was predictive of concurrent or subsequent S. aureus infections. Culture-proven S. aureus infections were identified using the hospital microbiology database. Of the 16,681 p

Diagnosing Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhi Infections by Polymerase Chain Reaction Using EDTA Blood Samples of Febrile Patients From Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Globally, there are an estimated 22 million cases of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi infection each year. However, this figure is likely to be an underestimate due to the low sensitivity of blood culture in S. Typhi diagnosis. The aim of this study was to diagnose S. Typhi by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using patient's blood preserved with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). METHODS: From April 2012 to September 2013, typhoid fever surveillance was conducted in Polesgo and Nioko, 2 dry slum areas in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Blood culture was performed for

Fast, sensitive and specific diagnosis of infections with Leishmania spp. in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded skin biopsies by cytochrome b polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: Northern spread of sandflies and Leishmania spp. has been observed in Europe. Diagnosis can be difficult owing to the various clinical manifestations. Species identification is important for patient management and therapy. Molecular diagnostics is increasingly used for pan-Leishmania detection but species identification remains challenging in formalin-fixed material. OBJECTIVES: To apply cytochrome b (cytb) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing for identification of Leishmania species on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) skin biopsies; and to identify species-speci

Mitochondrial DNA depletion and respiratory chain enzyme deficiencies are present in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HIV-infected patients with HAART-related lipodystrophy.

The main objective of the present study was to ascertain if mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion as reported in HIV-infected patients with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-related lipodystrophy (LD) implies any degree of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) dysfunction. For this purpose, we evaluated HIV patients on different HAART schedules with LD (group A; n=12) and on HAART but without LD (group B; n=12), and untreated HIV-infected patients as controls (group C; n=24). mtDNA content was determined on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with a real-time PCR method. Estimation of vector infectivity rates for plague by means of a standard curve-based competitive polymerase chain reaction method to quantify Yersinia pestis in fleas.

The prevalence of infectivity within a vector population is a critical factor in arthropod-borne disease epidemiology but it is difficult to estimate. In the case of bubonic plague, infective flea vectors contain large numbers of Yersinia pestis within a bacterial mass that blocks the flea's foregut, and only such blocked fleas are important for biologic transmission. A bacterial quantitation method could therefore be used to assess the prevalence of plague-infective (blocked) fleas in a population. We developed a standard, curve-based, competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure to

Pool screen polymerase chain reaction for estimating the prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus infection in Simulium damnosum sensu lato: results of a field trial in an area subject to successful vector control.

Detection of infective parasites in the vector population can be an early indicator of recrudescence in areas freed of new cases of onchocerciasis. However, dissection of vector black flies is inefficient in areas subject to effective control. Recently, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay has been used to detect a single Onchocerca volvulus-infected black fly in pools containing large numbers of uninfected flies. This method had not been validated on wild-caught black flies in an area subject to effective vector control. Here, we report a method of restricting the pool screen PCR ass

[Transient pure red cell aplasia in an adult with acute parvovirus B19 infection: observation of PVB19 DNA by polymerase chain reaction, viral antibody and erythroid cells in the bone marrow].

A 35-year-old female was referred to our hospital for fever and anemia. Physical examination was unremarkable. Complete blood count revealed microcytic hypochromic anemia and reticulocytopenia. The bone marrow cellularity was normal. Some giant pronormoblasts were seen but other erythroid cells were absent. No stainable iron was seen. Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) DNA was detectable by polymerase chain reaction. Anti-PVB19 IgM-antibody was also positive in the serum on admission. Antibodies against rubella, measles, mumps, EB virus and HBs were negative and HBs antigen was also negative. Thus the dia

Exploration of materials suitable for single-chain variable fragment (scFv)-conjugated affinity silk and its novel application in preventing bacterial infections in ornamental fish.

The ornamental fish industry is highly prone to disease outbreaks caused by pathogenic microorganisms and parasites. Affinity silk is a material that contains a fibroin L-chain fused to a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) derived from a mouse monoclonal antibody (mAb). It is an effective affinity material with innovative potential for efficiently preventing infectious diseases in aquarium water. In this study, we explored materials suitable for developing anti-Aeromonas salmonicida affinity silk, associated devices for trapping pathogens in water, and the early detection of pathogens direc

Multidrug-resistant livestock-associated ST9-MRSA causing severe human infection without animal exposure: the food chain as a potential transmission route in China.

ST9 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a typical livestock-associated lineage in Asia and represents an important reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, its contribution to human infection and its transmission pathways remain incompletely understood. Here, we characterized a multidrug-resistant ST9-MRSA isolate (SAH77) recovered from a severe skin infection in a patient without occupational animal exposure, aiming to assess its antimicrobial resistance, genomic features, and pathogenic potential. Phylogenetic analysis based on a dataset of 218 Chinese ST9 S. a
