Amebic liver abscess was seen in 35 patients over a ten-year period at Cook County and the University of Illinois hospitals, Chicago; 32 had immigrated from an area of endemic amebiasis, but three were natives of Chicago. Typically they had right upper-quadrant abdominal pain and fever of short duration (nine days); on physical examination, upper abdominal tenderness and hepatomegaly were usually present. Home health care (HHC) is a well-established model of caring for patients in their homes, which has not been robustly applied to benefit patients without regular access to shelter. This article describes Chicago Street Medicine, an organization that implements HHC to improve health outcomes and care continuity for patients experiencing homelessness.

This article reports the findings of a study of the attitudes of 1,017 younger men toward pregnancy, family planning, and sexuality. Chronic pulmonary blastomycosis is often misdiagnosed and treated as tuberculosis in disease-endemic and non-disease-endemic areas. We report the case of a 32-year-old man who after visiting Chicago, Illinois, USA, returned to India and received treatment for tuberculosis for 12 months before receiving the correct diagnosis of blastomycosis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and types of injury and illness treated during a multiday recreational bicycling tour.
METHODS: In July 2001, 2100 bicyclists rode 520 miles from Minneapolis, MN, to Chicago, IL, during the 2001 Heartland AIDS Ride. A volunteer medical staff provided medical care along the route. All patient encounters were recorded in an injury and illness log. Information from the log was used to describe the incidence and types of injury and illness treated during the event.
