The "Pearls" of Multidisciplinary Team: Conquering the Uncommon Rosette Rash.

Linear IgA disease of childhood (LAD) also known as chronic bullous disease of childhood is an autoimmune disease with IgA deposition at the … espread painful rash and pyrexia. The rash transformed into painful blisters. A recent contact with chickenpox was present. She remained apyrexial but hemodynamically stable and was treated as chickenpox patient with secondary infection. Due to persistent symptoms after repeated attendance she was reviewed by Dermatology team and diagnosed with linear IgA di …

The number of cases of rubella, chickenpox, influenza and measles was ascertained for each month for the 15-year period. RESULTS: Exposures during the sixth month of pregnancy to the peaks of chickenpox [odds ratio (OR) 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-2.0] and rubella infections (OR 1 …

Breakthrough varicella in a cancer patient with persistent varicella antibody after one varicella vaccination.

A boy with Hodgkin disease contracted breakthrough varicella from his father, who had chickenpox. The boy had received a single varicella vaccination and was seropositive by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before being diagnosed with breakthrough varicella. Seropositivity after a single varicella vaccination does not guarantee complete protection in an immunocompromised child.

Hemorrhagic varicella: a case report and review of the complications of varicella in children.

The case of a previously healthy child who developed progressive systemic varicella with purpura is reported. The clinical course of this patient is outlined, and the range of potential complications of chickenpox in children is reviewed. Familiarity with the usual uncomplicated natural history of primary varicella infection should alert the clinician to signs and symptoms that signal significant systemic involvement.

Varicella optic neuritis.

A 14-year-old girl developed severe bilateral optic neuritis 1 week after the onset of chickenpox. Though previous case reports state that complete recovery is the rule, this child had a persistent decrease in visual acuity in the right eye and loss of color vision and defects in visual fields in both eyes.

Immunogenicity and safety of a live attenuated varicella vaccine in healthy subjects aged between 13 to 55 years: a double-blind, randomized, active-controlled phase III clinical trial in China.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and adults who contract chickenpox are at a higher risk of severe complications. Vaccination with the varicella vaccine (VarV) effectively prevents chickenpox. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this phase III, single-center, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled trial, 1,200 healthy participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive two doses of either the test vaccine or the active control vaccine. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antibody was detected before vaccination and 42 days after the two doses of vaccination. RESULTS: The lower limits of the 95% C…

Conjunctival Lesions Secondary to Systemic Varicella Zoster Virus Infection.

PURPOSE: To report and present images of a case in which discrete conjunctival lesions developed in the setting of primary varicella zoster virus infection (ie, chickenpox). METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: This report describes a young, unvaccinated male who developed an acutely painful, red eye in the setting of disseminated primary varicella zoster infection. The cutaneous rash was widespread and included lesions on both eyelids. The patient was found to have multiple discrete de-epithelialized lesions involving the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva. Throughout the dise…

The effects of school holidays on transmission of varicella zoster virus, England and Wales, 1967-2008.

BACKGROUND: Changes in children's contact patterns between termtime and school holidays affect the transmission of several respiratory-spread infections. Transmission of varicella zoster virus (VZV), the causative agent of chickenpox, has also been linked to the school calendar in several settings, but temporal changes in the proportion of young children attending childcare centres may have influenced this relationship. METHODS: We used two modelling methods (a simple difference equations model and a Time series Susceptible Infectious Recovered (TSIR) model) to estimate fortnightly values of …

10: Herpes simplex and varicella-zoster virus infections.

Any new patient with suspected genital herpes should have diagnostic testing with virus identification. Type-specific serological tests that … apy is available for initial and recurrent non-genital herpes simplex. Primary varicella infection (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles) are usually diagnosed clinically, but can be confirmed by detection of varicella-zoster virus antigens or nucleic acid from swabs of lesions or by antibody tests. Antiviral therapy should be considered in chickenpox if …

Ulcerative stomatitis, gingivitis, and skin lesions. An unusual case of primary herpes simplex infection.

A 2-year-old white girl had acute oral ulceration, gingivitis, pyrexia, cervical lymph node enlargement, and a generalized, initially macular and later purpuric rash. None of the common oral viral infections, with the exception of chickenpox, is usually associated with a rash. This presented a diagnostic dilemma that appears not previously to have been reported in the dental literature.

Varicella-zoster virus infection in children with malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Immunocompromised children are potentially threatened by infections, among which, the highly contagious chickenpox infection is the most common. In the past six months, there has been a spate of five chickenpox infections in children with malignancy, all of whom were receiving chemotherapy at that time. METHODS: The cases of 17 children with malignancies, who suffered from varicella-zoster infection during a period of chemotherapy at Taichung Veterans General Hospital were reviewed. RESULTS: The diagnoses of their neoplasms were 12 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 2 lymphoma, …

Herpes zoster vaccination.

Varicella (chickenpox) is a highly contagious airborne disease caused by primary infection with the varicella zoster virus (VZV). Following the resolution of chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in the dorsal sensory and cranial ganglion for decades. Shingles (herpes zoster [HZ]) is a neurocutaneous disease caused by reactivation of latent VZV and may progress to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is characterized by dermatomal pain persisting for more than 120 days after the onset of HZ rash, or "well-established PHN", which persist for more than 180 days. Vaccination with an attenuated …

Infectibility of separated peripheral blood mononuclear cell subpopulations by varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

Varicella zoster-virus (VZV) is a humanpathogenic alpha-Herpesvirus that causes chickenpox after primary infection. The virus spreads by aerosol or direct contact with infectious vesical fluids, it enters the body via the respiratory tract. In a first viremic stage it replicates in local lymph nodes, followed by a secondary viremic stage. In the course it spreads through the body to endothelial cells in the periphery. During acute viremia of chickenpox viral DNA can be detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) by PCR and in situ hybridization. Recently published results quantified …

RESULTS: With an 85% coverage rate vaccination is expected to reduce the number of chickenpox cases by approximately two-thirds and varicella-related complications by up to 75%. Upgrading the school entry vaccination record check strategy to improve varicella vaccination coverage: results from a quasi-experiment study.

BACKGROUND: The school entry vaccination record check strategy (SECS) is an appropriate opportunity to recommend vaccines for students to improve vaccination coverage (VC). However, it is only utilized for providing necessary catch-up vaccination for students who are missing the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) vaccines in China. We aimed to address that gap and quantify the relationship between the SECS policy and the increase of coverage in varicella vaccine (VarV). METHODS: We employed a pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design to examine the effect of the upgraded SECS policy
