DAX1 is an unusual member of the orphan nuclear receptor family of transcription factors. Mutations in human DAX1 cause X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita, while abnormal duplication of the gene is responsible for male-to-female dosage-sensitive sex reversal. Based on these and other observations, DAX1 is thought to play a role in adrenal and gonadal development in mammals. Muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) is part of the receptor complex that is involved in the agrin-induced formation of the neuromuscular junction. Paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria (PCH) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by intravascular haemolysis causing haemoglobinuria. It is due to a biphasic haemolysin known as the Donath-Landsteiner antibody, which binds specifically to the P antigen of red blood cells at low temperatures, leading to complement activation and red cell lysis at 37 degrees C. PCH is a rare disease which predominantly affects the paediatric population, occurring mostly during viral infections. We report on what is possibly the first case of PCH in an adult to be precipitated by chicken pox infection.

Experimentally induced scoliosis was investigated in pinealectomized chickens using pathologic and neurophysiologic means. In the present paper, the diencephalic origin of the chick pineal gland was analyzed by a series of experiments: prosencephalic substitution; in vitro culture of isolated diencephalons; and total or partial excission of the diencephalic roof. The results indicate that the differentiation of the chick pineal gland in the rooof of the third ventricle is not influenced by the neighbouring brain vesicles and is of diencephalic origin. Moreover, in order to obtain chick embryos with pineal agenesia, the whole diencephalic roof has to be removed.

Sequential study of permeability and cellular responses following intradermal concanavalin A in the chicken skin, using the colloidal carbon technique, revealed an increase in vascular permeability which was mostly confined to venules.
