The Role of Trauma Type and Age in the Relation Between Trauma Exposure and Intelligence.

Experiencing potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is associated with deficits in cognitive functioning for youth. Previous research has demonstrated that PTE type may influence the association between PTE experiences and intelligence, such that IQ scores may differ by the type of PTE experienced. Additionally, mixed findings in the literature suggest that these associations might differ by age. The current study examined the association between PTE type and IQ and how age may moderate this association. In a sample of youth in foster care (N = 328, Mage = 13.25), physical, psychological, and sex

The role of family and individual factors in going through adolescence having a disabled sibling - analysis of a healthy child's functioning. A case-control study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Having a disabled sibling can be a source of extremely important and enriching experiences that foster the development of social and emotional competences, as well as broadening the child's perspective and knowledge. On the other hand, it also poses many challenges for the siblings, especially in adolescence. Thus, the aim of the proposed project is to investigate the specificity of the growing up process in young people with disabled siblings. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: A total of 160 dyads (320 participants) - an adolescent and one of his/her parents - will take part in this cr

Navigating complexity: understanding the experiences, motivations and challenges of conducting research with perinatal individuals who use opioids and other substances.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased opioid use (OU) among individuals of child-bearing age, pregnant and postpartum individuals with OU, and the experiences of these individuals and scientists with related expertise, are notably absent in scientific literature and discourse. The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a large, longitudinal, U.S.-based consortium project, aims to understand how brain and child development is shaped by various adversities and protective factors, including prenatal exposure to opioids and other substances. Given the persistent challenges of engaging pregnant

"It's almost like not existing": Adult children's experiences of not being recognized and their perceptions of being forgotten by their parents with dementia.

Parents living with dementia sometimes do not recognize their adult child caregivers, who may then perceive they are forgotten. Yet, research on the experience of being unrecognized and perceived as forgotten by a parent with dementia is scarce. Object relations theory suggests healthy development of a child's sense of self during early development is linked to being held in mind by a primary caretaker. Thus, it is unclear how being unrecognized and perceived as forgotten by parents living with dementia impacts adult children's identities. To investigate this phenomenon, this qualitative study

Confirmatory factor analysis of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among a community-based sample of parents and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), very little advancement has been made in how ACEs are defined and conceptualized. The current objectives were to determine: 1) how well a theoretically-derived ACEs model fit the data, and 2) the association of all ACEs and the ACEs factors with poor self-rated mental and physical health. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Well-Being and Experiences Study, survey data of adolescents aged 14 to 17 years (n = 1002) and their parents (n = 1000) in Manitoba, Canada collected from 2017 to 2018. From caregiving burden to income transformation: intergenerational employment effects of long-term care insurance.

BACKGROUND: Long-term care insurance (LTCI) has been introduced in China to address the challenges posed by an aging population. This study examines its impact on the income of older adult households, using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2011 to 2020. The analysis further explores heterogeneity and implications for income inequality. METHODS: A Difference-in-Differences (DID) approach is employed, with 12 pilot cities as the treatment group and non-pilot cities as the control group. The analysis is based on 33,435 valid observations of individuals a

Extended reality (XR) in psychosocial and forensic interventions for child and adolescent sexual abuse: a systematic review of current applications and future directions.

The integration of extended reality (XR) technologies-virtual (VR) and augmented (AR)-into child sexual abuse (CSA) interventions has grown over the past decade. This systematic review explores the application, efficacy, and ethical implications of XR tools in psychosocial, forensic, preventive, and therapeutic approaches addressing CSA. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, identifying 11 empirical studies published between 2014 and 2024. Three main intervention categories emerged: (1) professional training, (2) prevention

Perceptions of perinatal depression among low-income mothers and families in Mumbai, India.

Perinatal depression yields long-term adverse effects on maternal mental health, maternal-child interactions, and child development. Research conducted in India suggests that the risk of perinatal depression may be associated with socio-cultural factors. This warrants an assessment of cultural attitudes towards perinatal depression. Our study examined the perceptions of perinatal depression among pregnant mothers (n = 46) admitted to antenatal and postnatal care wards, as well as their accompanying relatives (n = 60), at a government hospital in Mumbai, India. We administered structured interv

Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Adolescents Entering Child Protective Services.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Persons aged 15-24 years have the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Adolescents in protective services custody may be at even greater risk of acquiring STIs, but little is known about the prevalence of STIs among this population. We therefore set out to assess the prevalence of STIs among adolescents seen in the Harris County Child Protective Services Clinic. DESIGN: A retrospective chart review from January 2009 to December 2011 was conducted. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients aged 12-18 years seen for their intake physical examination at the Harris

Cortisol response to synacthen stimulation is attenuated following abusive head trauma.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and other early-life environmental stressors are known to affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. We sought to compare synacthen-stimulated cortisol responses in children who suffered inflicted or accidental traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Children with a history of early-childhood TBI were recruited from the Starship Children's Hospital database (Auckland, New Zealand, 1992-2010). All underwent a low-dose ACTH(1-24) (synacthen 1 μg IV) test, and serum cortisol response was compared between inflicted (TBI(I) ) and accidental (TBI(A) ) groups. RESULTS: W

Late onset autistic symptoms and other fluctuating behaviors.

Suzanna was born to a 26-year-old woman who used cocaine, alcohol, and cigarettes and experienced domestic violence throughout her pregnancy. Suzanna was placed in foster care with her current adoptive family after her birth. Her initial evaluation at 4 years revealed a global developmental delay (physical: 6 months; social and communication: 12 months). Improvements in development seemed to be in response to subsequent interventions. At 5 years, she had borderline intellectual functioning, an expressive or receptive language disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.Suzanna exper

Perinatal Care of Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: An estimated one in nine women seeking perinatal care is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), yet CSA may be unknown to nurses and other health care providers. Childhood sexual abuse can have adverse physical and psychological effects for survivors, and the intimacy of perinatal care can trigger distress like intrusive thoughts. PURPOSE: To explore available literature about CSA survivors and perinatal care. Specific aims were to 1) identify nursing actions that ease undesirable feelings during perinatal care for CSA survivors and 2) identify gaps in the literature on perin

Using the 'F-words' to adopt a holistic and child rights promoting approach in developmental assessment clinics in Sydney: a quality improvement study.

BACKGROUND: The way childhood disability is understood and represented in various domains is evolving. The 'F-words for Child Development', derived from The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, is a framework that is gaining increasing prominence. This paper reports on a quality improvement project in South Western Sydney, designed to encourage a more holistic, strengths-based approach to assessment, formulation and documentation in a child developmental assessment service. We implemented the 'F-words' framework (Function, Family, Fitness, Fun and Friends) into r
