Scaling up home-visiting to promote early childhood development and prevent violence in Rwanda: a hybrid type-2 effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Children in impoverished families-especially those affected by violence-face risks to healthy development. In the years of strong economic recovery since the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, the Rwandan Government has invested in early child development, social and child protection and violence prevention, but few strategies for scaling evidence-based interventions (EBIs) in these areas have been studied. METHODS: We present a Hybrid Type-2 Implementation-Effectiveness study of the PLAY Collaborative implementation strategy to engage government and other stakeholders in scaling Su

Child protection and welfare concerns in an adult emergency department.

AIM: Emergency clinicians may be the first professionals to identify child protection and welfare (CPW) concerns. Under Children First legislation, mandated persons are legally required to report such concerns to Tusla Child and Family Agency (CFA). This study aimed to enhance emergency clinician knowledge and confidence in identifying and reporting CPW concerns. METHODS: A retrospective review of Emergency Department (ED) referrals to Medical Social Work (MSW) from January 2023 to October 2024 was undertaken. Risk and safety of children and youth in child protection systems: A systematic review of risk assessment instruments.

BACKGROUND: The volume of referrals concerning child abuse and neglect underscores the importance of systematic risk assessment to identify and analyse factors that increase its likelihood, enabling timely intervention (Brem & Forrester, 2023). OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examines actuarial risk assessment instruments employed in child protection systems and identifies the specific risk factors they evaluate. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, EBSCO, and Web of Science databases, supplemented by manual searches, following PRISMA guidelines. Methodological qual

[Child abuse: its knowledge, attention and diffusion in three pediatric hospitals in Mexico].

Child abuse (CA) was observed in Mexico since the early 60's through isolated publications from clinical cases and where manifestations of physical injury or sexual abuse predominated. Since the 90's, the Clinic for Integral Care of the Abused Child was established at the National Institute of Pediatrics (CAINM-INP, for its Spanish acronym), which actions were addressed to the care, teaching and research on this topic. This approach was replicated in two hospital centers in the country: the Clinic for Integral Care of the Abused Children at Children's Specialty Care Hospital of Chihuahua and t

[Prevalence of drepanocytosis in Guadeloupe. A systematic detection in kindergartens].

The authors appreciate the prevalence of drepanocytosis in a supposed healthy group of blood donors at the Transfusion Center. They propose to carry out a systematic detection of the various hemoglobin types existing in the isle at all stages of active-life: birth, school-time, prenatal consultations, controls for enrolment in the army, etc. They describe the action of the "mother and child protection service" which could develop information and genetic advice to try to limit the dissemination of the drepanocytic tract as well as to avoid the birth of homozygotes. To improve the control, they

Long-term economic consequences of child maltreatment: a population-based study.

Child maltreatment is prognostically associated with long-term detrimental consequences for mental health. These consequences are reflected in higher costs due to health service utilization and productivity losses in adulthood. An above-average sense of mastery can have protective effects in the pathogenesis of mental disorders and thus potentially cushion adverse impacts of maltreatment. This should be reflected in lower costs in individuals with a history of child maltreatment and a high sense of mastery. The aims of the study were to prognostically estimate the excess costs of health servic

The sexual abuse of adolescent boys in humanitarian emergencies: A qualitative study of how international humanitarian organisations are responding.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, public health research has increasingly shown that humanitarian emergencies can negatively impact the wellbeing of adolescents. However, recent studies have largely not addressed the differentiated impact on adolescent boys or how humanitarians are responding. OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand how humanitarian organisations respond to child sexual abuse against adolescent boys in humanitarian emergencies. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Sixteen humanitarian staff based in Geneva, Switzerland, and 35 humanitarian staff and 52 child protection caseworkers from the

In the best interests of society.

Each year, exposure to violent trauma takes its toll on the development of millions of children. When their trauma goes unaddressed, children are at greater risk for school failure; anxiety and depression and other post-traumatic disorders; alcohol and drug abuse, and, later in life, engaging in violence similar to that to which they were originally exposed. In spite of the serious psychiatric/developmental sequelae of violence exposure, the majority of severely and chronically traumatized children and youth are not found in mental health clinics. Instead, they typically are seen as the 'troub

Educating early childhood care and education providers to improve knowledge and attitudes about reporting child maltreatment: A randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Early childhood care and education providers (CCPs) work with over 7 million young children. These children are vulnerable to physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and neglect. However, CCPs make less than 1% of all reports of suspected child abuse and neglect that are made to child protective services. CCPs are therefore an untapped resource in the public health response to child maltreatment. However, their knowledge and attitudes about duties to report child maltreatment are poorly understood. Moreover, no rigorous research has tested whether their knowledge and attitudes about …

The relationship between child protection contact and mental health outcomes among Canadian adults with a child abuse history.

Despite being a primary response to child abuse, it is currently unknown whether contact with child protection services (CPS) does more good than harm. The aim of the current study was to examine whether contact with CPS is associated with improved mental health outcomes among adult respondents who reported experiencing child abuse, after adjusting for sociodemographic factors and abuse severity. The data were drawn from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (CCHS-2012), which used a multistage stratified cluster design (household-level response rate = 79.8%). Included in thi

Detecting and preventing child maltreatment in primary care and PHNs' role-a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a global problem that puts children at risk of mental illness, substance abuse, and premature death. Interdisciplinary collaboration is important in preventing and detecting child maltreatment. In Norway, children undergo universal preventive health assessments and receive complimentary follow-up care from specialized public health nurses in child and family health clinics. These nurses conduct regular check-ups and home visits to monitor children for signs of maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe how public health nurses at chil

"Knock me down a little bit more": Support networks of parents impacted by the child welfare system, a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Families impacted by the child welfare system (CWS) face increased risks of poverty, family dysfunction, and poor child outcomes. Strong support networks, comprised of formal support from government programs or service providers and informal support from family and friends, are an under-researched potential mechanism to facilitate family engagement and protect against child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study's objective was to describe formal and informal supports among parents with substantiated maltreatment who recently entered the CWS to understand parents' situations and cond

A review of recent literature on the impact of parental substance use disorders on children and the provision of effective services.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update of recent studies of the incidence and impact of parental substance use disorders (SUDs) on children, and to identify effective treatment programs to assist parents with SUDs and their children. RECENT FINDINGS: Children of parents with alcohol and drug use disorders (COPADs) suffer from physical, mental and behavioral problems at higher rates than other children and are more likely to develop their own SUDs in adolescence. Parenting styles and familial dysfunction contribute to the intergenerational transmission of SUDs. Studies of the negative effects
