Alpha hemispheric asymmetry in children with learning disabilities and normally achieving children during story comprehension and rehearsal prior to narrative production.

Twelve children with learning disabilities attending a remedial summer clinic were compared with 12 normally achieving controls balanced for age, sex, and handedness on alpha amplitude and production of narratives. Specifically, all subjects participated in three conditions. Condition 1 was a vigilance condition, Condition 2 involved listening to a story without an ending that had to be retold, and Condition 3 was an opportunity to rehearse the story mentally and construct an appropriate ending. Alpha amplitudes were monitored during the three conditions to determine any hemispheric asymmetry

Patterns of the left thalamus embedding into the connectome associated with reading skills in children with reading disabilities.

We examined how thalamocortical connectivity structure reflects children's reading performance. Diffusion-weighted MRI at 3 T and a series of reading measures were collected from 64 children (33 girls) ages 8-14 years with and without dyslexia. The topological properties of the left and right thalamus were computed based on the whole-brain white matter network and a hub-attached reading network, and were correlated with scores on several tests of children's reading and reading-related abilities. Significant correlations between topological metrics of the left thalamus and reading scores were o

Sex Differences in Intelligence on the WISC: A Meta-Analysis on Children with Specific Learning Disabilities.

Several studies have examined performance on the Wechsler batteries in typically developing children and adolescents. In particular, some studies suggest that cognitive functioning may differ between males and females. In this framework, the present study aims to investigate, through a meta-analytical approach, whether there are sex differences in the profiles emerging from the WISC battery in children with a Specific Learning Disability. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted, resulting in a final selection of 12 published studies which utilized the WISC and included at least one

Machine Learning to Improve the Access to the Clinical Pathway for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities.

A prompt diagnosis of specific learning disabilities (SLDs) is prevented by an overwhelmed healthcare system. As teachers lack clinical preparation, school-based screening needs to be improved. This work proposes methods to (1) identify children's profiles, (2) select children who need a visit, and (3) provide a better understanding of the characteristics connected with the start of the clinical pathway. We analyzed data from 364 children referred to clinical consultation. Starting from a 96-item screening questionnaire filled in by teachers at school, we computed a severity score for 19 diffe

Creating Family-Centred Support for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Africa: Examples of Local Community Interventions.

Preschoolers with disabilities and their family caregivers are overlooked by many public health initiatives, especially in low-income countries. Yet they can benefit from early intervention to promote their development soon after birth and to provide a better quality of life for their families. In this paper, we describe how a community-based approach has been implemented with minimal funding in two areas in Zimbabwe: a township in Harare and in rural areas of Manicaland Province. Our aim in sharing this information-allied with references to research studies recently undertaken in Africa-is th
