Optimization of Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Polyphenols from Crataegus monogyna L.

Hawthorns (Crataegus monogyna L.) contain numerous bioactive compounds, with its extracts demonstrating health benefits. This study focused on optimizing a more sustainable extraction method, specifically microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), to obtain polyphenols from hawthorn leaves and flowers. HPLC/UV analysis identified key compounds, including gallic and chlorogenic acids, isoquercetin, rutin, hyperoside, vitexin, and quercetin. Principal component analysis (PCA) assessed correlations between extraction conditions, total phenolic content (TPC), and key compounds. PCA grouped conditions in…

Development and evaluation of a prostate-targeting wild chrysanthemum rectal heating gel for prostatitis treatment.

This study aimed to develop a rectal heating gel for targeted treatment of prostatitis, on the basis of the synergistic effects of wild chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemu indicum) extract (rich in buddleoside and chlorogenic acid) and a phase-change microemulsion (PCME). A microemulsion system was developed with n-docosane serving as the thermal energy storage medium. The PCME was systematically characterized for particle size, stability, phase transition temperature, as well as heat-retention capacity. Results demonstrated good stability, with a phase transition temperature of 42.94-43.57 °C and lat…

Evaluation of the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects of Trigonella foenum-graecum L and Coffea arabica L seeds in STZ induced diabetic mice: impact on kidney and liver functions.

INTRODUCTION: diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease of the endocrine system characterized by elevated blood sugar levels due to disorders in insulin action, and secretion. This study aims to evaluate the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects of Trigonella foenum-graecum L and Coffea arabica L seeds in STZ (streptozotocin) induced diabetic mice: impact on kidney and liver functions. METHODS: twenty-six male mice aged 2 weeks, were divided into five groups: normal control, diabetic control (DC), positive control (PC), galactomannan-treated (GM), and chlorogenic acid-treated (CGA).…

Effect of variety, soil fertility status and agronomic treatments on carrot mineral and phytochemical composition and consumer liking of flavor traits.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of variety (Nantes and Imperator), soil fertility status (high and low) and … tatus and stimulate greater yield. Carrot phosphorus was correlated with falcarindiol biosynthesis. Chlorogenic acid and falcarindiol were correlated with antioxidant capacity, but not falcarinol or total phenolic compounds. CONCLUSION: Carrots were not strongly affected by agronomic treatments in terms of yield or phytochemical status; however, soil biological a …

Hepatoprotective Effect of Auricularia delicata (Agaricomycetes) from India in Rats: Biochemical and Histopathological Studies and Antimicrobial Activity.

Auricularia delicata, an edible mushroom, has been used as a traditional medicine in Manipur, India, for various gastrointestinal and liver … njury. Phytochemical analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography revealed the presence of chlorogenic acid in the extracts. Its protective property might be due to the presence of a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant effect of chlorogenic acid. The antimicrobial activity accounts for its use against diarrhea. Hence, A. delicata could be one of the best s …

Essential Roles of Natural Products and Gaseous Mediators on Neuronal Cell Death or Survival.

Although precise cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration still remain enigmatic, key factors associated with degenerative disorders, such as glutamate toxicity and oxidative stress, have been recently identified. Accordingly, there has been growing interest in examining the effects of exogenous and endogenous molecules on neuroprotection and neurodegeneration. In this paper, we review recent studies on neuroprotective and/or neurodegenerative effects of natural products, such as caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid, and gaseous mediators, including hydrogen sulfide and nitr…

Inhibitory effect of p-coumaric acid by Rhodiola sachalinensis on melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells.

Rhodiola has been widely used in traditional Asian medicine. In this study, we tested the hypopigmentation effects of R. sachalinensis and its active compounds including catechin, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, and p-tyrosol. Results have shown that only p-coumaric acid inhibits melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. However, p-coumaric acid did not inhibit tyrosinase activity when L-DOPA was used as a substrate. Instead, p-coumaric acid inhibited tyrosinase activity when L-tyrosine was used as a substrate. We further analyzed the changes of cAMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) phosp…

Preharvest sorbitol application modulates phytohormone profiles and enhances nutraceutical quality of extra-early nectarine (Prunus persica).

Foliar sorbitol applications (1, 2, and 5%) at different developmental stages were assessed in extra-early nectarines. Early, high-dose treatments (5% E1) acted as potent metabolic modulators, shifting the hormonal balance by increasing abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and ethylene signaling, promoting advanced ripening and concentrated harvest. This hormonal regulation was associated with enhanced accumulation of high-value phytochemicals: significantly enhancing peel anthocyanins (e.g., cyanidin-3-glucoside), total phenolics (chlorogenic acid, flavan-3-ols), and carotenoids, …

Fabrication, characterization and in vitro digestion of camellia oil body emulsion gels cross-linked by polyphenols.

This study was designed to investigate the formation of camellia oil body (OB) emulsion gels covalently cross-linked by oxidized polyphenols: catechin (OCT), caffeic acid (OCF), chlorogenic acid (OCA), and tannic acid (OTA). The structural characteristics, thermal stabilities, antioxidant activities, rheological properties, and lipid digestion kinetics of the cross-linked OB-polyphenol emulsion gels were studied. The results of free sulfhydryl and amino group contents, FT-IR, fluorescence spectroscopy, surface hydrophobicity and thermal stability analyses confirmed the formation of covalent in…
