OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and adjuvant bile-salt therapy for the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis.
DESIGN: A prospective case study. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 54 months.
SETTING: A university teaching hospital.
PATIENTS: Two hundred and twenty-three patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis, a gallbladder that opacified at oral cholecystography and three or fewer radiolucent stones with a maximum total dimension of 3 cm. Of these patients, 197 were given bile salts (ursodeoxycholic acid or chenodeoxycholic acid, 8 to 10…

BACKGROUND: Severe thyrotoxicosis remains a high-risk endocrine emergency, particularly in thyroid storm and amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicos … mmon and generally mild, and withdrawal from routine clinical use reflects the obsolescence of oral cholecystography rather than safety concerns.
CONCLUSIONS: Iopanoic acid offers safe, rapid and predictable T3 reduction as short-course rescue or bridging therapy in thyroid storm and refractory, iodine-unresponsive AIT, where it can be lifesaving. It is not recom …

We present a case of an 81-year-old woman, without medical history, with a swelling in the right lateral abdominal wall. Ultrasound and multislice CT were sufficient to confirm the diagnosis of a herniated gall bladder through the abdominal wall. This is the first case in which MRI proved to be a useful modality to exclude malignant characteristics and revealed an accurate differentiation between the gall bladder and the different layers of the abdominal wall. The gall bladder, including three stones, was removed laparoscopically. Histopathological research revealed signs of a chronic cholecys

Duplication of the gallbladder, a rare congenital anomaly, is important in clinical practice because it may cause some clinical, surgical, and diagnostic problems. We present imaging findings of a double gallbladder including coronal reformatted computed tomographic sections, to our knowledge not previously presented, and discuss the radiologic signs that may be helpful in diagnosis. We also present another case of a double gallbladder in which only one gallbladder was imaged 10 years after cholecystectomy.
