OTX2 duplications: a recurrent cause of oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum (OAVS) is the second most common cause of head and neck malformations in children after orofac … e present in 100% of patients. The variability in expressivity was significant, ranging from simple chondromas to severe microtia, even between intrafamilial cases. Heterologous overexpression of OTX2 in zebrafish embryos showed significant effects on early development with alterations in craniofacial development. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that pro …

Tracheal chondrosarcoma: A case report, systematic review, and pooled analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal chondrosarcoma is a rare malignancy, and formal treatment guidelines have not been established due to the lack of high … ndrosarcomas of the lung, bronchus, larynx, or other head and neck subsites were excluded. Cases of chondromas were excluded. Thirty-five patients with tracheal chondrosarcoma were identified in the literature since 1959. Advanced age was significantly associated with recurrent or persistent disease (p = .003). The majority (77%) of cases were treated with …

Clinical, radiologic and pathologic characteristics of the Carney triad: a case report and literature review.

This report describes a patient with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage as initial presentations of the Carney triad, a synchronous or metachronous condition involving gastric leiomyosarcoma, extra-adrenal paraganglioma and pulmonary chondroma. A 26-year-old woman presented with dizziness and several episodes of melena over 3 days. Physical examination revealed pale conjunctiva but normal hemodynamic status. Gastroendoscopy showed one antral submucosal tumor with evidence of an associated bleeder (the bleeder over the mucosal surface of the gastric tu…

Chest CT combined with artificial pneumothorax: value in determining origin and extent of tumor.

To determine the presence of chest wall and mediastinal invasion by lung cancer and to establish the origin of chest tumors, we studied 12 patients with intrathoracic tumors by using chest CT combined with artificial pneumothorax. Six patients had primary lung cancer, two had metastases, and one each had neurofibroma, pericardial cyst, chondroma of the rib, and malignant mesothelioma. All 12 tumors abutted the chest wall or mediastinum and could not be separated by conventional CT. Between 400 and 800 ml of air was injected into the pleural space before a second CT scan was obtained. No invasi…

Review of tracheal neoplasia in dogs and cats (1961-2024).

Tracheal neoplasia is considered infrequent in domestic animals. A detailed summarized description of the demographic trends of the patients … 58.8% (97/165) were cats. The most common tracheal neoplasia in dogs in descending order were osteochondroma, plasma cell tumor, chondrosarcoma, malignant epithelial tumors (adenocarcinoma and carcinoma), and chondroma. In dogs, most of the affected animals were males (53%), with a mean age at the time of diagnosis of 6.7 years, and most of the tumors were …

Immunohistochemistry for SDHB divides gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) into 2 distinct types.

The Carney triad (CT) is gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), paraganglioma, and pulmonary chondroma. The GISTs of CT show different clinical, molecular, and morphologic features to usual adult GISTs but are similar to the majority of pediatric GISTs. We postulated that these GISTs would show negative staining for succinate dehydrogenase B (SDHB). We performed SDHB immunohistochemistry on GISTs arising in 5 individuals with CT, 1 child, 7 individuals with GIST in young adulthood including 2 with germline KIT mutations, 3 individuals with neurofibromatosis 1, one 63-year-old female with multi…

Submucosal arytenoidectomy: new surgical technique and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Arytenoidectomy is indicated in cases of bilateral median vocal cord paralysis (most commonly due to recurrent laryngeal nerve pa … rael. METHOD: We present six cases: five cases of bilateral vocal cord paralysis and one case of a chondroma of the arytenoid with mechanical fixation of the cord. All patients suffered from dyspnea on mild exertion. An arytenoidectomy using the submucosal approach was performed on all six patients. RESULTS: Airway results were evaluated via fibre-optic v …

Avulsion of flexor digitorum profundus secondary to recurrent enchondroma.

We report a case of avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus secondary to recurrent enchondroma. The tumor was curetted with bone grafting of cancellous bone from the distal radius, and the fragment avulsed by the flexor digitorum profundus tendon was fixed to its original site using a pullout suture through the distal phalanx to the nail. The lesion healed and function recovered 6 years after surgery.

Common tumors of the hand.

Many types of cell structures that exist within the hand contribute to the broad spectrum of hand tumors, the majority of which are benign. When evaluating patients, the physician must be aware of the various types of tumors that can exist in order to predict the type of tumor present and also to advise the patient preoperatively concerning the possibility of recurrences, relief of symptoms, and the chances of malignancy.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the foot. A report of a missed diagnosis.

A chondromyxoid fibroma in the calcaneus of an 11-year old girl was primarily diagnosed as a solitary bone cyst. During three years the tumor was curetted three times. Soft-tissue involvement increased with each local recurrence; finally a below knee amputation was necessary.

[Aneurysmal bone cysts (author's transl)].

Authors describe histological observations of 15 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts. Frequent occurrence of areas similar to giant cell tumor or solitary bone cyst was found together with fields producing chondroid intercellular substance. Attention is called to the differentiation of the two lesions described above and occasionally tumors and tumor-like conditions of chondroblastic origin. The vascular changes observed in the surroundings (arteriologsclerosis) support the earlier hypotheses attaching importance to local hemodynamic disturbance in the pathogenesis of the lesion. In certain cases p

Nonepithelial Tumors of the Larynx: Single-Institution 13-Year Review with Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Nonepithelial tumors of the larynx are rare and represent a minority of all laryngeal neoplasms. Imaging has an important role in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and surveillance of these entities. However, unfamiliarity with these neoplasms can cause diagnostic difficulties for radiologists, especially because many of the imaging findings are nonspecific. By using a systematic approach based on clinical history, patient age and gender, lesion location, endoscopic results, and specific imaging findings, the differential diagnosis can often be narrowed. These tumors typically affect the subm

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma arising from a calcifying enchondroma--a case report.

A man, 79 years of age, developed a malignant fibrous histiocytoma which arose in relation to a calcifying enchondroma of the distal femur. Radiographs showed a fracture through an intensely calcified bony tumour with no bony destruction. The clinical diagnosis was a dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma. Histology showed an anaplastic sarcoma with calcified tissue showing extensive areas of necrosis and degeneration. No chondrosarcomatous foci were found.
