[5- year old boy with Weber-Christian Syndrome or histiocytic cytophagic panniculitis? Diagnostic difficulties. Case presentation].

The aim of the paper is to present a case of a 5-year-old boy hospitalised because of recurrent high temperature and reddish blue infiltration of skin and hypodermis lasting 3 months. Because of pancytopenia and hepatomegaly, we suspected a proliferative disease of the haematopoietic or lymphatic system. Several bone marrow biopsies, did not show neoplastic changes. Serological tests excluded virus and animal borne infections. In the histopathologic examination of skin and hypodermis biopsy there was an inflammatory infiltration of the adipose tissue without features of vessel inflammation (th

Value of fibreoptic oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy: experience with 4000 procedures at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Moshi, Tanzania.

The paper presents the results of a retrospective study and the experiences with 4000 fibreoptic oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopies (EGD), which were performed at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) between 1985 and 1989 in an open access service. Seventy per cent of all patients examined had abnormal findings with duodenal ulcer as the most frequent diagnosis (22%). Pyloric stenosis was seen in 6%, gastric ulcer in 5% and esophageal varices in 4% of all patients. High figures were found for carcinoma of the esophagus (4%) and malignancy of the stomach (5%). Gastritis was diagnosed in 11%

Different Contexts of Sexual Abuse With a Special Focus on the Context of Christian Institutions: Results From the General Population in Germany.

Recent revelations of the extent of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Germany and the United States have once more triggered the debate about sexual abuse. Those inquiries identify cases that are known to authorities or have been recorded in these institutions. However, to assess the full magnitude of the problem, data beyond recorded or known cases are needed, as it can be assumed that a vast number of cases are not reported and are hence not included in such file reviews. Therefore, representative surveys are needed. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of se

TORCH Antibodies Among Pregnant Women and Their Newborns Receiving Care at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Moshi, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis, other (syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19, and hepatitis B), rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) - known by the acronym TORCH - is a group of infections affecting both mothers and their unborn babies with adverse short- and long-term outcomes. The majority of infected mothers are asymptomatic, which leaves only speculation as to the probable cause of many congenital anomalies, stillbirths, prematurity, and death resulting from TORCH infections. The main objective of this study was to investigate previou

Mycobacterium chelonae infection presenting as recurrent cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules--a presentation previously diagnosed as Weber Christian disease.

Although the dermatologic community rarely uses "Weber-Christian Disease" as a diagnosis, it still appears in the internal medicine literature. Herein we present a patient with recurrent cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules who was initially treated with aggressive immunosupression for a presumptive diagnosis of Weber-Christian Disease. After more than a decade the patient was diagnosed with cutaneous Mycobacterium chelonea. This case is an excellent example of the difficulty in diagnosing mycobacterial infections and underscores the importance of having a high suspicion for infectious etiologie

[Satisfaction survey of the dental treatment project of Hadassah and the "International Fellowship of Christians and Jews" among the family and the professional servant].

UNLABELLED: Social inequalities in health are a serious public health problem. In Israel dental treatment is not included in the national health insurance. Low socio-economic groups are therefore significantly inferior in oral and dental health. Health for all is one of the WHO aims for the 21st century. This project, which was described in a previous article, intended to upgrade dental health of those belonging to a low socio-economic group and to minimize the inequality in dental health by providing care to children 6-12 years of age free of charge. This survey investigated the satisfaction

Successful treatment of a patient with febrile, lobular panniculitis (Weber-Christian disease) with oral cyclosporin A: implications for pathogenesis and therapy.

We report a 15-year-old Japanese girl with severe systemic Weber-Christian disease (WCD) who presented with acute onset of high fever associated with tender subcutaneous nodules. Laboratory tests showed an elevated serum concentration of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), leukopenia, and coagulation abnormalities. The anti-nuclear and anti-DNA antibodies were negative, and the serum pancreatic enzymes and alpha 1-antitrypsin levels were normal. Pulse steroid therapy was not effective, and eventually cerebellar hemorrhage occurred. After initiation of oral cyclosporin A (CyA) therapy, fever came down

[Growth hormone deficiency during the course of histiocytoses. A report on a case of Hand-Schuller-Christian disease (author's transl)].

Hand-Schuller-Christian disease frequently products histiocytic localization in the part of the posterior hypothalamus which is responsible for diabetes insipidus. Retarded growth is also relatively frequent and has multiple etiologies. An isolated deficiency in growth hormone (GH) which may be due to localization of the disease in the anterior hypothalamus is much rarer. In the case reported the possibility of this localization was only suspected because of the presence of a hyperprolactinemia. Retarded growth was obviously present but it was difficult to relate this to a GH defian 7 ng/ml. F

Clinical features of yellow fever cases at Vom Christian Hospital during the 1969 epidemic on the Jos Plateau, Nigeria.

Between 27 September and 27 December 1969, 103 patients diagnosed as having yellow fever were admitted to Vom Christian Hospital, near Jos, Nigeria. Headache and vomiting were the commonest presenting complaints, and 95% of the patients showed scleral icterus or bile pigments in the urine. Haemorrhage, signs of renal failure, and CNS involvement (agitation, seizures) were associated with a grave prognosis. The overall case-fatality ratio was 45.6%. The average duration of illness for fatal cases was 6.4 days and for non-fatal cases 17.8 days. Six illustrative case histories are presented.
