A case of myelodysplastic syndrome in a 68-year-old male in whose marrow cells two translocations were established, i.e., t(4;11)(q13;q23) and t(11;17)(p?:q11), as well as other karyotypic changes (-6,-18,15p+), is described. The relation and identity of the bands involved in the translocations affecting chromosomes #11 and #17 in leukemias in which these chromosomes are specifically affected, i.e., t(4;11) in acute myelomonocytic leukemia and t(15;17) in acute promyelocytic leukemia, are discussed in relation to the case described.

H-Y antigen was studied serologically on blood cells and cultured fibroblasts of patients with numerical aberrations of the sex chromosomes. As compared with normal males, patients with the karyotypes 48,XXXY and 49,XXXXY have reduced H-Y antigen titers; a tendency toward reduced titers can also be detected in the 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome. X-linked mental retardation (MR) associated with a fragile X chromosome was found in two Swedish families. The fragile X chromosome was demonstrated in 5/5 boys with mental retardation. Clinical data on four of these boys are presented. In one of the families, the mental retardation was associated with macro-orchidism, large hands and large, folded ears. Codeine sulfate which is obtained from opium or made by methylating morphine has been found to induce a number of anomalies in the meiotic chromosomes of S. fossilis. Feulgen technique was undertaken for experimental studies. At high doses abnormal metaphases, agglutination, achromatic lesions, some breaks and chromosomal scattering were evident. However, the frequency of abnormal metaphases was high amongst the rearrangements. The susceptibility of meiotic metaphase during peak period of breeding is indicative of inhibition in the division activity.

We have developed genetic tests for estimating the proportion of small deletions among chemically induced point mutations in Drosophila. The criteria used allow the detection of deletions that are large enough to include a viable visible mutation as well as a lethal, or a sex-linked lethal as well as a gene that is required for the development of a spermatogonium into a spermatozoon. Feulgen-DNA contents and chromosome lengths and projected areas were measured in salivary gland nuclei from Drosophila prepupae which had developed at 25 degrees or 15 degrees C. Nuclei from a given prepupa fell into 3 to 5 DNA classes corresponding to different levels of polyteny. The ultrastructure of lampbrush chromosomes has been examined in sections of end-embedded spread preparations, where the nuclear sap was dispersed prior to fixation, and in oocyte nuclei fixed entire, in 60-kV and i-MV electron microscopes. Cytogenetic studies were performed on a severely mentally retarded adolescent with multiple congenital abnormalities (congenital heart disease, cryptorchidism and infantilism, rocker bottom feet and eye abnormalities). He had a complex rearrangement as a result of three breaks of chromosome 3 and two breaks of chromosome 5, and haphazard reunion of the fragments. This complex rearrangement appears balanced. The loss of very small chromosome fragments is perhaps the cause of the dysmorphia. The possibility of position effect is discussed.

Observations on the chromosomes of cells from 5 human malignant tumors are reported. Each tumor had one or more distinctive marker chromosomes. Marker chromosomes were present in a total of 700 of 711 metaphases from these tumors, which included an early malignant lesion of the cervix showing minimal invasion.
