Cadmium aggravates liver injury by activating ferroptosis and neutrophil extracellular traps formation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive environmental contaminant and a significant risk factor for liver injury. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the involvement of ferroptosis and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in Cd-induced liver injury in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and to explore its underlying mechanism. Cd-induced liver injury was associated with increased total iron, malondialdehyde (MDA), and Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4), together with reduced levels of glutathione, glutathione peroxidase-4a (Gpx4a), and solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC

Evaluation of the efficacy of MONTANIDE™ GR01, a new adjuvant for feed-based vaccines, on the immune response and protection against Streptococcus agalactiae in oral vaccinated Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under laboratory and on-farm conditions.

Streptococcosis, an emerging infectious disease caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, has had adverse effects on farmed tilapia. Several vaccines have been developed to prevent this disease and induce a specific immune response against S. agalactiae infection. In this study the use of MONTANIDE™ GR01, a new adjuvant for oral vaccination, was optimized for use in tilapia under laboratory and field studies. In the laboratory trial the immune response and protective efficacy of two doses of MONTANIDE™ GR01, 20 % (w/w) and 2 % (w/w), included into the feed-based adjuvanted vaccines were assessed com

Identification of novel antimicrobial peptides and histone-derived cryptides in the hepatic transcriptome of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) infected with Streptococcusagalactiae.

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a valuable freshwater fish species widely cultured globally and in China. Its aquaculture production is challenged by Streptococcus agalactiae, the primary etiological agent of streptococcosis. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a critical role in the innate immune system of fish, exhibiting defensive and inhibitory effects against a wide range of pathogens. This study aimed to identify antimicrobial peptides and histone-derived cryptides in the Nile tilapia. We combined high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of S. agalactiae-infected tilapia hepatic t

Pparα activation stimulates autophagic flux through lipid catabolism-independent route.

Autophagy is a cellular process that involves the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes to degrade damaged proteins or organelles. Triglycerides are hydrolyzed by autophagy, releasing fatty acids for energy through mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation (FAO). Inhibited mitochondrial FAO induces autophagy, establishing a crosstalk between lipid catabolism and autophagy. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), a transcription factor, stimulates lipid catabolism genes, including fatty acid transport and mitochondrial FAO, while also inducing autophagy through transcriptional regulatio

Neurotoxicant effects of bisphenol A, nonylphenol, and tert‑butyl phenol in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Worldwide production of alkyl phenols and ethoxylated alkyl phenols is high due to their broad industrial uses. It has been widely documented that they are endocrine disruptors, and it has been suggested that they could exert neurotoxic effects. However, a lack of information about the neurotoxic effects of APs and APEs prevails. In this study, the bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (NP), and 3‑tert-butylphenol (tertBP) effects on brain and spinal cord of Nile tilapia exposed to environmental concentrations were evaluated by assessing acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), a
