Serotonin was biochemically shown to be present in the iris-ciliary body of the frog, pigeon, goldfish and guinea-pig eyes at a concentration of between 55 and 95 ng per g. A clinical and histopathologic review of 23 cases of melanocytoma of the ciliary body discloses that the tumor is unilateral, extends into contiguous structures, slowly enlarges, and commonly undergoes necrosis. We report the clinical and histopathologic features of four cases of melanocytoma of the ciliary body, review the previously reported and presented cases, and discuss the differential diagnosis of melanocytoma of the ciliary body.

The cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptor of the iris--ciliary body of the rabbit has been shown to translocate to the cell nucleus within 30 min of an injection of cortisol. Over the next 2 1/2 hr the amount of receptor returns to the control value. Para-aminohippuric acid (PAH) accumulates against a concentration gradient in the ciliary body and independently in the iris of the rhesus monkey eye. This accumulation is inhibited by incubation of 0 degrees C and shows saturation kinetics in both tissues. Melanocytoma is a locally invasive intraocular tumor usually located in the optic nerve head, iris, ciliary body and choroid. Melanocytoma can undergo necrosis and lead to pigment dispersion. We report a case of melanocytoma of the ciliary body with vitreous seeds filling the vitreous cavity. A sub conjunctival pigmented lesion was seen due to extra scleral extension of the tumor. The diagnosis of melanocytoma was confirmed by biopsy of the sub conjunctival lesion. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed to clear the vitreous cavity with good visual recovery.
