A Comparative Study of Condylar Bone Pathology in Patients with and without Temporomandibular Joint Disorders Using Orthopantomography.

This study aimed to compare condylar bony pathology in patients with and without temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) using orthopantomography at Ajman University dental clinics between 2017 and 2021. Patient data from the Ajman University archives were collected after obtaining ethical approval. OPG (orthopantomogram) views were evaluated for potential TMJ pathology. Three independent observers underwent calibration and image analysis, with their agreement level calculated using Kappa statistics (score 0.781). Condylar changes were coded from 0 to 6. Statistical tests such as the Mann-Whitn

Gene Therapy for Polyglutamine Spinocerebellar Ataxias: Advances, Challenges, and Perspectives.

Polyglutamine spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) comprise a heterogeneous group of six autosomal dominant ataxias caused by cytosine-adenine-guanine repeat expansions in the coding region of single genes. Currently, there is no curative or disease-slowing treatment for these disorders, but their monogenic inheritance has informed rationales for development of gene therapy strategies. In fact, RNA interference strategies have shown promising findings in cellular and/or animal models of SCA1, SCA3, SCA6, and SCA7. In addition, antisense oligonucleotide therapy has provided encouraging proofs of conc

Schizophrenia and neurosurgery: A dark past with hope of a brighter future.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and progressive psychiatric disease that remains difficult to manage in the 21st century. Current medical therapies have been able to give reprieve and decrease incidence of psychotic episodes. However, as the disease progresses, patients can become ever more refractory to current pharmaceutical agents and the polypharmacy that is attempted in treatment. Additionally, many of these drugs have significant adverse effects, leaving the practitioner in a difficult predicament for treating these patients. The history of neurosurgery for schizophrenia, among other psychiat

[The anaesthetist's liability and bullfights].

Whether you are an aficionado or completely uninitiated, everyone has an opinion on bull-fighting. The bull-fighter is in constant risk of injury. A medical team made up of surgeons, anesthetists, emergency physicians and nurses remains present throughout the show. For the anaesthetist and surgeon, a wounded bullfighter is an emergency because the vital and functional prognosis are engaged. The team must act in conformity with normal practice and the Code of Medical Ethics because any lack of coordination between the practitioners is punishable by law in the same way as technical fault. Police attitudes toward people with intellectual disability: an evaluation of awareness training.

It is argued that more favourable police attitudes to people with intellectual disability (ID) are essential in meeting the police code of ethics, which stresses impartiality and respect for human dignity. The need to acknowledge and investigate the extent of support for eugenic attitudes in other key professionals who have a significant role in the successful inclusion of people with ID in community settings is discussed. The present paper reports on the evaluation of an awareness training event conducted by the Royal Ulster Constabulary in terms of the impact on attitudes towards people with

Trajectory changes in psychosocial adaptation levels of patients after implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices and development of the intervention programme: a mixed-methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has become an important treatment for various types of arrhythmias and severe heart failure, effectively improving patient prognosis and increasing survival rates. However, patients after CIED implantation need to go through a process of coexisting with and adapting to the internal electronic device. This may result in limitations in daily activities, discomfort and lifestyle changes, which can easily lead to negative emotions and psychosocial maladjustment in the patients, seriously affecting their physical and m

Representational Veracity in Data Science Health Research: Targets, Proxies, Labels, and Descriptors.

Prevailing ethical oversight of data science health research concentrates on privacy, consent, bias, and fairness. These concerns are necessary but insufficient, because each presupposes an answer to a prior question that is seldom asked directly. That is, "do the targets, proxies, labels, classifications, ontologies, and population descriptors on which a current study rests still truthfully represent the persons, populations, and phenomena they are taken to describe, at the point of use rather than the point of collection?" In this viewpoint, we name that question representational veracity (R

How Gender-Sensitive Disaster Management is Addressed in the Turkish Parliament: A Qualitative Study from Feminist Bioethics Perspective.

BACKGROUND: The devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria on February 6, 2023, caused significant destruction and loss of life, to the extent that they have been termed the "Disaster of the Century." Although women are disproportionately affected by disasters, they have historically been overlooked in disaster management. However, with the increased awareness brought about by the feminist movement regarding secondary inequalities arising from structural disparities such as gender roles and economic dependency, the concept of "gender-sensitive disaster management" has gained promine

Barriers to biomedical care: Qualitative insights into health-seeking behaviors and systemic challenges among people affected by leprosy in Tanzanian communities.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis in leprosy reflects both how people interpret symptoms and seek care, and how effectively health systems recognize and manage the disease. Qualitative evidence from Tanzania remains limited on how the interaction between patients and health care workers affect provision of care to people affected by leprosy in a timely manner. The main aim of this study was to explore health-seeking behaviors and systemic challenges affecting access to biomedical care among people affected by leprosy in selected Tanzanian communities. METHODS: Ethics Statement: Ethical approval f

Addressing the Key Challenges of Decentralized Clinical Trials in Europe: Multistakeholder Perspective Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) represent an emerging model in clinical research, accelerated by the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. By leveraging digital technologies and local health care resources, DCTs aim to increase accessibility and reduce participant burden compared to traditional site-based models, which often face recruitment failures and high attrition rates. While various regulatory initiatives in Europe, such as the Accelerating Clinical Trials in the European Union program and the European Medicines Regulatory Network recommendation paper (upda

"The research assistants kept coming to follow me up; I counted myself as a lucky person": Social support arising from a longitudinal HIV cohort study in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Participation in longitudinal research studies in resource-limited settings often involves frequent interactions with study staff and other participants, as well as receipt of incentives and transportation reimbursements. Social support-receipt of material and emotional resources from one's social network-has been linked to antiretroviral adherence in sub-Saharan Africa. The extent to which social support arises from study participation, its range and depth, and its implications for observational study conduct, have not been extensively described. METHODS: We conducted individual

Ethnographic investigation of patient-provider communication among African American men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, African American men bear a disproportionate burden of prostate cancer (PCa) compared with all other groups, having a higher incidence and mortality, poorer quality of life and higher dissatisfaction with care. They are also less likely to receive guideline-concordant treatment (eg, undertreatment of aggressive disease). Inadequate patient-provider communication contributes to suboptimal care, which can be exacerbated by patients' limited health literacy, providers' lack of communication skills and time constraints in low-resource, safety net settings. This study is d

Increasing timely access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder using novel digital health and system dynamics modelling approaches: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the continued burden of opioid overdose in communities in the USA, effective treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD), such as medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), remain underused. Motivational interviewing techniques and linkage to MOUD via digital health are innovative practices developed to overcome persistent barriers to accessing MOUD treatment. These practices are merged in a comprehensive digital health platform, RecoveryPad (developed by the Center for Progressive Recovery). The Swiss Prison Study (SWIPS): Protocol for Establishing a Public Health Registry of Prisoners in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: The health aspects, disease frequencies, and specific health interests of prisoners and refugees are poorly understood. Importantly, access to the health care system is limited for this vulnerable population. There has been no systematic investigation to understand the health issues of inmates in Switzerland. Furthermore, little is known on how recent migration flows in Europe may have affected the health conditions of inmates. OBJECTIVE: The Swiss Prison Study (SWIPS) is a large-scale observational study with the aim of establishing a public health registry in northern-central Sw

Perineural local anaesthetic catheter after major lower limb amputation trial (PLACEMENT): study protocol for a randomised controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Pain after major lower limb amputation for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a significant problem. A perineural catheter (PNC) can be placed adjacent to the major nerve at the time of amputation with a continuous local anaesthetic infusion given postoperatively to try and reduce pain. Although low-quality observational data suggest that PNC usage reduces postoperative opioid requirements, there are limited data regarding its effect on pain. The aim of PLACEMENT is to explore the feasibility of running an effectiveness trial to assess the impact of a PNC with continuous local an

Impact of Abortion Bans on Emergency Care for Patients With Vaginal Bleeding: An Ethnographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Dobbs decision enabled widespread state abortion bans, creating legal ambiguity for clinicians managing reproductive emergencies in the ED. While impacts on obstetricians are documented, less is known about how these laws influence emergency medicine practice. We explored how ED clinicians navigate care for patients with vaginal bleeding under Indiana's restrictive abortion ban. METHODS: We conducted a team-based ethnographic study at an urban academic ED and Level 1 Trauma Center in Indiana between August 2023 and October 2024. Data included six weeks of site-based observatio
