[Prevention of cognitive disorders in postoperative period after carotid endarterectomy].

238 patients with atherosclerosis of carotid arteries after reconstructive operations under different types of anesthesia were enrolled in the study. Neuropsychological survey with Montreal cognitive assessment scale, frontal assessment battery and clock drawing test was performed in dynamics. Minimal cognitive dysfunction was mentioned in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic stenosis after combined anesthesia with regional anesthesia. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction was developed after sevoflurane and propofol anesthesia in patients with asymptomatic stenosis. After inhalation anest

Cognitive functioning in psychiatric disorders following deep brain stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is routinely used as a treatment for treatment-refractory Parkinson's disease and has recently been proposed for psychiatric disorders such as Tourette syndrome (TS), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Although cognitive deterioration has repeatedly been shown in patients with Parkinson's disease following DBS, the impact of DBS on cognitive functioning in psychiatric patients has not yet been reviewed. OBJECTIVE: Reviewing the available literature on cognitive functioning following DBS in psychiatric patients. ME

[EMDR and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy in the treatment of Panic Disorder: a comparison].

AIM: A comparison between two treatments used in the Panic Disorder: EMDR, an evidence-based method for PTSD, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is nowadays considered the most effective psychotherapeutic approach for this disorder. METHOD: In order to evaluate any improvement obtained from the adopted treatment, a descriptive analysis through the use of the SPSS software has been carried out, on a sample of 20 subjects, divided in two groups (EMDR and CBT). RESULTS: From the data obtained, a tendency to improve is already clear from the first evaluation (after 12 sessions), in a

Cognitive disorders in mice: cytokine signaling pathways as therapeutic targets.

Surplus accumulation of regulatory T cells (Tregs) is known to be at the bottom of many morbid conditions, among them being neuropsychiatric diseases. In particular, Tregs may inhibit Th1 cells, including brain autoimmune lymphocytes, controlling the local microglial response and brain tissue homeostasis. The present study was undertaken in an attempt to suggest a novel approach for the treatment of maladaptation to mental stress associated with excessive Treg accumulation. Recently it was shown that alkylating drugs (ADs), such as melphalan and cyclophosphamide (Cy) in the dose 100-fold lower

Social-cognitive bias and depressive symptoms in outpatients with bipolar disorder.

A deficit of social cognition in bipolar disorder has been shown, even when patients are stable. This study compares the attribution of intentions (social-cognitive bias) in a group of 37 outpatients with bipolar disorder with 32 matched control subjects. Bipolar patients scored significantly higher in the Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire, showing an angry and intentionality bias (P = .001, P = .02). Differences in blame scale and hostility bias did not reach statistical significance, but a trend was found (P = .06). Bipolar patients with depressive symptoms presented a higher scor

Agnosia, apraxia, callosal disconnection and other specific cognitive disorders.

Cortical function deficits have long been studied by anatomoclinic correlations. Recent functional imaging studies have allowed scientists to better understand which cerebral areas and which networks are involved in cognitive function deficit. This chapter will review the current knowledge on agnosia, apraxia and callosal disconnection syndromes.

The effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy for temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and its effects on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have been examined in several studies. We are trying to combine results of these studies and to explore the effectiveness. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial, Pubmed and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Data were searched to collect randomised and semi-randomised controlled trials (RCTs), comparing CBT with any control group receiving other dental treatments. Two authors independently retrieved, extracted and assessed the quality of included studies. The search strategy resulte

The MATRICS consensus cognitive battery in patients with bipolar I disorder.

The Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) initiative was devised to identify a neurocognitive battery to be used in clinical trials targeting cognition in schizophrenia, a process, which resulted in the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). The MCCB has been selected by the United States Food and Drug Administration to be used as the primary outcome measure in registry trials for cognitive agents in schizophrenia. Given the clinical and cognitive overlap between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BPD), it is likely that any compound shown to

The role of CREB signaling in Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders.

Gene expression changes in the brain affect cognition during normal and pathological aging. Progress in understanding the cellular processes regulating gene expression networks in cognition is relevant to develop therapeutic interventions for age-related cognitive disorders. Synaptic efficacy mediating memory storage requires the activation of specific gene expression programs regulated, among others, by the transcription factor cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB). CREB signaling is essential for long-lasting changes in synaptic plasticity that mediates the conversion of short-term me

[Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders].

Recent years have seen the development of Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy, i.e. psychological self-help program mediated via the Internet, the patient being in contact via e-mail with the support person directing the therapy. Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy usually consists of psychoeducation, exercises and prevention of the recurrence of symptoms. Modules of the network program are thus the cornerstones of "live" cognitive-behavioral therapy. Self-help provided by Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy therapy has been found to be effective especially in the treat

Cognitive and psychiatric phenotypes of movement disorders in children: a systematic review.

AIM: The cognitive and psychiatric aspects of adult movement disorders are well established, but specific behavioural profiles for paediatric movement disorders have not been delineated. Knowledge of non-motor phenotypes may guide treatment and determine which symptoms are suggestive of a specific movement disorder and which indicate medication effects. METHOD: The goal of this review is to outline the known cognitive and psychiatric symptoms associated with paediatric movement disorders. We used a systematic approach, via PubMed, and reviewed over 400 abstracts of studies of selected disorde

Cognitive reappraisal in trauma-exposed women with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation and a high prevalence of traumatic stress. Recent estimates suggest that 2-6% of non-clinical populations suffer from BPD. Despite this relevance, this is the first study considering the neural mechanisms underlying trauma-history and temporal features of cognitive reappraisal in non-clinical BPD patients using script-driven stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined subjective ratings of negative emotional experience and brain activity following up- and down-regulation of emotional

SHORT COMMUNICATION: Apolipoprotein E genotype and cognition in bipolar disorder.

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) has been extensively studied as a risk factor for sporadic and late onset Alzheimer's Disease (AD). APOE allele (∗)3, the most frequent variant, is not associated to cognitive dysfunction (CD) or to increased AD risk. Differently, the (∗)4 allele is a well-established risk factor for CD, while the (∗)2 allele is associated with survival and longevity. CD is an important feature of Bipolar Disorder (BD) and recent data suggest that CD may be one of its endophenotypes, although controversial results exist. The aim of this research is to study the association of APOE genot

[Symptom validity assessment and forensic evaluation of cognitive and mental disorders].

Continuing from two previous reviews in this journal (Fortschr Neurol Psychiatr 2002; 70: 126 - 138; 2007; 75: 140 - 154), modern methods and research on symptom validity assessment are presented, with special emphasis on civil forensic examinations. In spite of continuing resistance from many professionals, symptom validity assessment is gradually gaining ground in German-speaking countries, but there is a developmental lag in European countries as a whole, as compared to developments in North America. Major research lines are presented, and questionnaire measures for the detection of a negat

[Cognitive functions and nonspecific brain systems in patients with panic disorders].

Ninety-three patients with panic disorders and 36 healthy controls have been studied using clinico-neurological, psychometric, neuropsychological and neurophysiological (event-related P300 evoked potentials) methods. Patients with typical panic disorders (TPD) featured a higher level of anxiety, depression and cognitive disturbances such as memory and attention impairment as compared to the control group. Patients with atypical panic disorders differ from those with TPD by the lower anxiety level, more pronounced depression and cognitive impairment. Comparing to healthy subjects, there were a

Bipolar I and bipolar II disorder: cognition and emotion processing.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment may be part of the endophenotype of bipolar disorder (BP), but little is known about patterns and severity of impairment in BP subgroups and their relation to depression. The same applies to deficits in emotion processing known to be present in BP. METHOD: To explore the relationship between depression and impairment in cognition and emotion processing and the differences between BP subgroups, we assessed 36 (25 BP I and 11 BP II) patients using a cognitive battery and a facial emotion recognition task. RESULTS: BP patients were impaired compared to published

Motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania.

OBJECTIVE: Problems with inhibiting certain pathological behaviors are integral to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trichotillomania, and other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. The authors assessed and compared motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in OCD and trichotillomania for the first time, to their knowledge. METHOD: The Stop-Signal Task and the Intradimensiona/Extradimensional Shift Task were administered to 20 patients with OCD, 17 patients with trichotillomania, and 20 healthy comparison subjects. RESULTS: Both OCD and trichotillomania showed impaired inhib
