Imagery rescripting for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder not responding to outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy.

This study tested the effects of Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in seven individuals who remained symptomatic after at least one earlier exposure and response prevention treatment. ImRs was provided twice per week for three weeks. A single-case experimental design with repeated measures was utilized to test the intervention effectiveness with measurements at baseline, pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 2.5-5.5 weeks and 3-month follow-up. Results revealed a statistically significant overall decrease in OCD symptoms from baseline to 3-month follow-up

Costs and Outcomes of a Therapist-Guided Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Multicenter Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) has demonstrated efficacy and potential cost-effectiveness in treating depression, anxiety, and panic disorder in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, evidence of its outcomes and costs in routine care settings on a national level remains limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the program costs and outcomes of therapist-guided iCBT for depression, social anxiety, and panic disorder posttreatment (T2) and at 6-month follow-up (T3) in a broad context, in addition to exploring how the program's costs and…

Application of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy among children and adolescents with childhood household dysfunction.

Childhood household dysfunction (CHD) is a common adverse childhood experience, which brings the heavy physical and mental afflictions to children and adolescents. Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps children and adolescents who have experienced childhood trauma with traumatic memories. It aims to enhance the coping abilities of CHD children and adolescents, thereby improving the negative effects caused by trauma and effectively reducing psychological burden. TF-CBT can effectively improve post-traumatic stress disorder, emotional …

Predictors of treatment outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy for intermittent explosive disorder: A preliminary analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined potential treatment outcome predictors of a multicomponent cognitive behavioral intervention for inter … nd to significantly predict treatment outcome. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the notion that cognitive behavioral therapy can be effective for a wide range of individuals with IED, with little variation in efficaciousness based on presence of demographic characteristics, comorbid disorders, or treatment motivation/engagement. This seems to be particularly the case for …

Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Chronic Tinnitus in a German Tertiary Clinical Real-World Setting.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was shown to be effective in reducing tinnitus-related distress in numerous controlled trials. Real-world data from tinnitus treatment centers are an important addition to controlled trials for demonstrating the ecological validity of the results from the randomized controlled trials. Thus, we provided the real-world data of 52 patients participating in CBT group therapies during the time period from 2010 to 2019. The groups consisted of five to eight patients with typical CBT content such as counseling, relaxation, cognitive restructuring, attention training…

Psilocybin-Assisted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults with Major Depressive Disorder: Rationale and Treatment Development.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that one to two administrations of psilocybin have acute antidepressant effects for people with major depressive disorder. These data on psilocybin have generated considerable enthusiasm, but little empirical attention has been paid to the therapy that adjoins psilocybin treatment (psychedelic-assisted therapy, or PAT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we present the initial protocol and plans to empirically test the psychosocial therapy that adjoins psilocybin treatment with the goal of optimizing this therapeutic approach for adults with major depress

Stepping Together in Stepped Care Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Case Report of Core Components.

New service delivery systems are needed to expand the reach of evidence-based practices for childhood trauma. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective approach for treating -childhood trauma, yet treatment barriers remain. Stepped care models that incorporate parent-led -treatment with therapist assistance may be one approach to improve access. This case study highlights the core components of a parent-led therapist-assisted treatment called Stepping Together that serves as a Step 1 treatment within a stepped care model. The components and structure of Stepping Together are described, alon…

Changes in neural activity following a randomized trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious for hoarding disorder (HD), though results are modest. HD patients show an increase in activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) when making decisions. The aim of this study is to determine whether CBT's benefits follow improvements in dACC dysfunction or abnormalities previously identified in other brain regions. METHOD: In this randomized clinical trial of 64 treatment-seeking HD patients, patients received group CBT, delivered weekly for 16 weeks, versus wait list. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to e…

Comprehensive Cortical Structural Features Predict the Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), 40% of OCD patients show a poor response to CBT. This study aimed to identify the cortical structural factors that predict CBT outcomes in OCD patients. A total of 56 patients with OCD received baseline structural MRI (sMRI) scanning and 14 individual CBT sessions. The linear support vector regression (SVR) models were used to identify the predictive performance of sMRI indices, including gray matter volume, cortical thickness, sulcal depth, and gyrification value. The patients’ OC s…

Examining the effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy on children and adolescents' executive function.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents impacted by childhood trauma often demonstrate executive function difficulties, which negatively affect self-regulation and potentiate the risk for trauma-related psychopathology and functional impairment. Evidence-based treatments for traumatized youth such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) aim to equip youth directly with skills for effective self-regulation and may thus also improve executive function. Moreover, adolescence is a sensitive period for executive function development, and interventions aimed at improving executive funct…

Cognitive behavioral therapy with and without biofeedback in fibromyalgia: Assessment of functional and clinical change.

The study compared the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with biofeedback or with emotional expression in individuals with fibromyalgia, and a waiting list control group. 88 women participated in a naturalistic study with random assignment. The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, SCL-90R, and a visual analog quality of life scale were used. Both intervention groups improved, but differed in physical and emotional control response. Using the reliable change index procedure, clinical improvement occurred in 18.8% of participants, and 4.8% achieved scores comparable with clinical…

Attachment style change and working alliance in panic disorder patients treated with cognitive behavioral therapy.

An insecure attachment style (AS), described as being highly anxious and/or avoidant, is often assumed to be stable over time, yet some studies show that AS can change. To the extent that AS may be malleable over shorter time periods, it potentially impacts key therapy processes and outcomes. In the present study, we first investigated the stability of AS in patients with panic disorder (N = 49) treated with short-term cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) including follow-up. Second, we tested whether time-specific change of AS predicted subsequent symptom severity, interpersonal distress (ID), …

Cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with mild to moderate depression: Treatment effects and neural mechanisms.

In this study, we combined clinical assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to investigate the brain mechanisms in mild to moderate depression (MMD) patients following cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Data were collected from 30 MMD patients and 18 healthy controls, and we divided patients into two treatment periods (4 weeks, 8 weeks). Clinical assessment indicated that depression characteristics, as quantified by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), were significantly higher in MMD patients than in healthy controls. At the baseline, MRI data revealed abnormalities in…

Hedonic hunger as a mechanism of action in outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Hedonic hunger (i.e., the motivation to consume palatable foods in the absence of an energy deficit) has been associated with the onset and maintenance of loss of control (LOC) eating. However, it remains underexplored as a mechanism of action in outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN). In the present study, we hypothesized that reductions in hedonic hunger would significantly mediate reductions in overall eating pathology and LOC episodes in two samples (N1 = 28, N2 = 23) of 20 and 16 sessions, respectively. METHOD: Participants completed the Eating …
