Neural Basis of Action Simulation in Architectural Perception: A Multi-voxel Pattern Analysis Study.

A growing body of neuroscience evidence indicates that perceiving everyday objects and environments triggers mental simulations of potential actions, preparing the brain for movement even before any motion occurs. Although previous research on navigation has demonstrated how the spatial configuration of corridors and doorways guide locomotion, it remains unclear whether architectural elements (e.g., doors, windows, stairs) that require direct interaction evoke distinct, action-specific representations in the brain. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate whether the passive perception of

Neurophobia in health profession students and practitioners: a systematic review and synthesis without meta-analysis (SWiM).

BACKGROUND: Neurophobia, defined as the fear of or aversion to neurology and neuroscience, is a challenge across health sciences and may contribute to workforce shortages. Previous reviews have exclusively focused on medical populations and have not systematically addressed measurement variability or the effects of educational interventions. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review builds on previous studies by analyzing neurophobia across the health sciences, focusing on prevalence rates, measurement instruments, associated factors, and the effects of educational interventions. METHODS: A systemat

Social Working Memory: a Systematic Review.

Social Working Memory (SWM) refers to the ability to maintain and manipulate socio-cognitive information-such as others' mental states, intentions, emotions, and traits-in order to guide social interactions. This systematic review aimed to (1) synthesize theoretical conceptualizations of SWM, (2) examine experimental paradigms and measurement protocols, and (3) outline future research directions. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus, following the PRISMA guidelines. Thirty studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that: (a) it

Soft-Tissue Mobilization and Pain Neuroscience Education for Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain with Central Sensitization: A Prospective Randomized Single-Blind Controlled Trial.

This study was conducted to demonstrate the therapeutic effect of soft-tissue mobilization (STM) combined with pain neuroscience education (PNE) for patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain with central sensitization. A total of 28 participants were recruited and randomly allocated to either the STM group (SMG) (n = 14) or the STM plus PNE group (BG; blended group) (n = 14). STM was applied twice a week for four weeks, with a total of eight sessions, and PNE was applied within four weeks, for a total of two sessions. The primary outcome was pain intensity, and the secondary outcomes wer

Insensitivity to social reputation in autism.

People act more prosocially when they know they are watched by others, an everyday observation borne out by studies from behavioral economics, social psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. This effect is thought to be mediated by the incentive to improve one's social reputation, a specific and possibly uniquely human motivation that depends on our ability to represent what other people think of us. Here we tested the hypothesis that social reputation effects are selectively impaired in autism, a developmental disorder characterized in part by impairments in reciprocal social interactions but …

The lateralized linguistic cerebellum: a review and a new hypothesis.

During the past 2 decades the collaboration across disciplines and the methodologic and conceptual advances of contemporary neuroscience have brought about a substantial modification of the traditional view of the cerebellum as a mere coordinator of autonomic and somatic motor functions. Growing insights in the neuroanatomy of the cerebellum and its interconnections, evidence from functional neuroimaging and neurophysiological research, and advancements in clinical and experimental neuropsychology have established the view that the cerebellum participates in a much wider range of functions tha

The effect of anxiety and hostility in silent mentation on localized cerebral glucose metabolism.

Ten normal, wakeful, young (average age, 25.3 +/- 6.6 years) male subjects received positron emission tomographic (PET) scans 45 to 120 minutes after an infusion of D-[18 F]deoxyglucose in order to assess localized cerebral glucose metabolic rates during silent visual and other sensory imagery and cognitive mentation. The typescripts of the verbal reports, limited to 5 minutes, of this type of mentation (including free-associations to all the silent mental events), were blindly content-analyzed to provide objective measures of various kinds of anxiety and hostility. Many significant positive a

Associations between psychological distress symptoms and cognitive function among trauma-exposed women: Moderating role of the developmental period of trauma exposure.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related internalizing symptoms, including anxiety and depression, are associated with emotional-cognitive alterations. These alterations, such as biased attentional processing and reduced emotional inhibition, are thought to contribute to persistent distress. However, these associations may vary across individuals. Developmental neuroscience suggests that the timing of trauma exposure (childhood, adolescence, adulthood) can differentially influence brain development and emotional processing. This study examined whether the developmental period of first

From neighborhoods to brain health: an outreach model linking health literacy, cognitive care, research, and the arts, in San Francisco.

Traditional community outreach, research recruitment, and engagement strategies in aging neuroscience often fail to target and capture the diversity of structural and environmental conditions that shape the risk of age-related neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), including Alzheimer's disease. In this manuscript, we describe the rationale, implementation, and outcomes of the Community Outreach Program (COP) of the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center (MAC), emphasizing its neighborhood-based initiative designed to engage vulnerable populations to improve brain health literacy, access to cognitive car

Time in mind: a multidisciplinary review on temporal perception, cognition, and memory.

This review examines temporal cognition through the lens of Mental Time Travel (MTT): the subjective experience of recalling past events and using them to construct future scenarios. The analysis specifically addresses how language and cultural context affect these abilities, integrating psychology, linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and anthropology. Findings from comparative cognition challenge whether they are uniquely human. Although such an approach was traditionally taken in non-human primates, the field of comparative cognition has become much more diverse. Comparative insights derive…

Diet-gut microbiota-immune-brain interactions in aging: mechanistic pathways and clinical implications.

With rising life expectancy and global population aging, cognitive decline has become a major and growing public health challenge. Advances in nutritional neuroscience highlight the gut microbiota-immune-brain axis as a key biological pathway through which diet may influence cognitive function during aging. The gut microbiota, a metabolically active ecosystem, responds dynamically to habitual dietary patterns and produces bioactive metabolites capable of modulating immune signaling, neuroinflammation, and neuronal function. Diets rich in microbiota-modulating foods (e.g., dietary fiber, polyph

Outcome measures for children with movement disorders.

The huge contribution of advances in the pediatric neurosciences, improvements in clinical practice, and new therapeutic options, has led to the development of new models of treatment and rehabilitation for dystonia in the last decade. It is now generally agreed that a multidimensional therapeutic approach is needed for children with motor disorders, whose motor function-conceived as a complex perceptive, motor and cognitive process - is impaired at a crucial time in their development, with a fall out on how their various adaptive functions evolve. Neurophysiological studies, modern neuroimagi

When Development Falls out of Sync: A Developmental Timing Framework for Learning Disabilities.

Learning disabilities are traditionally conceptualized as domain-specific disorders arising from deficits in reading, attention, or numerical processing. Although these approaches have substantially advanced understanding of dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyscalculia, they do not fully explain the marked heterogeneity, developmental variability, frequent comorbidity, or changing learning trajectories observed across children. This conceptual review proposes a developmental timing framework in which learning disabilities emerge, in many cases, from maturational a

Structural covariation between cerebellum and neocortex intrinsic structural covariation links cerebellum subregions to the cerebral cortex.

The human cerebellum is increasingly recognized to be involved in nonmotor and higher-order cognitive functions. Yet, its ties with the entire cerebral cortex have not been holistically studied in a whole brain exploration with a unified analytical framework. Here, we characterized dissociable cortical-cerebellar structural covariation patterns based on regional gray matter volume (GMV) across the brain in n = 38,527 UK Biobank participants. Our results invigorate previous observations in that important shares of cortical-cerebellar structural covariation are described as 1) a dissociation bet

Psychotherapy for older adults with depression: a narrative review.

The purpose of this narrative review was to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy for older adults with depressive disorders or clinically significant depressive symptoms; describe extensions of psychotherapy across populations, settings, providers, and modalities; review mechanisms and predictors of treatment response; and consider future directions. Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses demonstrate that psychotherapy benefits many depressed older adults, with the strongest evidence for a variety of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches, including problem-sol

Bridging Brain and Machine: A Neurocognitive Framework for Early Alzheimer's Detection Through Hierarchical Speech Processing.

Alzheimer's disease progressively disrupts temporal-frontal language networks, manifesting through degraded speech production detectable years before clinical dementia diagnosis. Traditional automated detection systems rely on handcrafted acoustic features, including mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, that may discard diagnostically relevant temporal dynamics through fixed spectral transformations. Drawing inspiration from cognitive neuroscience models of hierarchical speech processing, we propose the neuro residual acoustic learning framework, an end-to-end system operating directly on raw …
