Granulocyte Colony-stimulating Factor Producing Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

CASE REPORT: We report on the case of a 47-year old woman with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing relapsed oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer. Palliative immunotherapy with nivolumab was started. Absolute neutrophilic count increased during the course of immunotherapy and correlated with tumour progression. Under chemotherapy with weekly paclitaxel, dramatic tumour regression and decreasing absolute neutrophilic count were noted. G-CSF concentration in serum increased from 4.77 to 9.61 pg/ml during the final phase of tumour progression. Immunohistochemical staining of the

Candida parapsilosis Colony Morphotype Forecasts Biofilm Formation of Clinical Isolates.

Candida parapsilosis is a frequent cause of fungal bloodstream infections, especially in critically ill neonates or immunocompromised patients. Due to the formation of biofilms, the use of indwelling catheters and other medical devices increases the risk of infection and complicates treatment, as cells embedded in biofilms display reduced drug susceptibility. Therefore, biofilm formation may be a significant clinical parameter, guiding downstream therapeutic choices. Here, we phenotypically characterized 120 selected isolates out of a prospective collection of 215 clinical C. parapsilosis isol

Genomic comparison and phenotypic profiling of small colony variants of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei (B. pseudomallei) is an intracellular pathogen that causes melioidosis, a life-threatening infection in humans. The bacterium is able to form small colony variants (SCVs) as part of the adaptive features in response to environmental stress. In this study, we characterize the genomic characteristics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and metabolic phenotypes of B. pseudomallei SCV and wild type (WT) strains. Whole-genome sequence analysis was performed to characterize the genomic features of two SCVs (CS and OS) and their respective parental WT strains (CB and OB). Phylo

The Cholera Epidemic of 1907 and the Formation of Colonial Epidemic Control Systems in Korea.

It was in 1907 when Korea was annexed by Japan in the field of health care systems as the Gwangje Hospital, Uihakgyo the National Medical School and the Korean Red Cross Hospital were merged into the colonial Daehan Hospital, and massive cholera epidemic controls by the Japanese Army were enforced. However, despite their importance, the cholera epidemic of 1907 in Korea and preventive measures taken at that time have not yet been studied extensively as a single research subject. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a more concrete and broader understanding of the Korea-Japan annexatio

A 59-year-old man with chief complaints of right-sided rib pain and fever was admitted to our hospital. A type 2 tumor in the ascending colon was revealed by total colonoscopy. Computed tomography examination revealed multiple tumors in the liver. The white blood cell count was high as 13,740/μL. Chemotherapy was planned after treatment with antibiotics, but it was not successful. Right colectomy was performed for infection control. mFOLFOX6 therapy was performed, but liver metastases progressed rapidly, and he died on the 39th postoperative day. The immunohistochemistry revealed G-CSF produci

APIStrip, a new tool for environmental contaminant sampling through honeybee colonies.

Honeybee colonies are proven bio-samplers in their foraging area, as organic contaminants such as pesticides are continuously deposited in their hives. However, the use of honeybee colonies for the biomonitoring of contaminants requires the sampling of biological matrices such as bees, pollen, honey or beeswax. This active sampling alters the colonies, especially in the case of frequent sampling intervals. In this study, a non-biological passive sampler based on Tenax TA is described: the APIStrip (Adsorb Pesticide In-hive Strip). A concentrated solution of Tenax in dichloromethane has been ap

Discovery of Eurytrema Eggs in Sediment from a Colonial Period Latrine in Taiwan.

In this study we take a closer look at the diseases that afflicted Japanese police officers who were stationed in a remote mountainous region of Taiwan from 1921 to 1944. Samples were taken from the latrine at the Huabanuo police outpost, and analyzed for the eggs of intestinal parasites, using microscopy and ELISA. The eggs of Eurytrema sp., (possibly E. pancreaticum), whipworm and roundworm were shown to be present. True infection with Eurytrema would indicate that the policemen ate uncooked grasshoppers and crickets infected with the parasite. However, false parasitism might also occur if t

Quantification of Neisseria meningitidis Adherence to Human Epithelial Cells by Colony Counting.

To cause an infection, the human specific pathogen Neisseria meningitides must first colonize the nasopharynx. Upon tight interaction with the mucosal epithelium, N. meningitidis may cross the epithelial cellular barrier, reach the bloodstream and cause sepsis and/or meningitis. Since N. meningitidis niche is restricted to humans the availability of relevant animal models to study host-pathogen interactions are limiting. Therefore, most findings that involve N. meningitidis colonization derive from studies using cultured human cell lines. Human epithelial cells have been successfully used to e

Monkey viral pathology in the Sukhum colony and modeling human viral infections.

The data characterizing spontaneous infections of Old World monkeys: measles, poliomyelitis, hepatitis A (HPA), encephalomyocarditis, coronavirus infection, simian hemorrhagic fever (SHF), are presented. The experimental infections were reproduced with the isolated pathogens. On these models, pathogenesis and epidemiology of these diseases were studied. The efficiency of poliomyelitis, measles and HPA vaccines is shown. The priority of data on the discovery of earlier unknown disease-SHF and "Sukhumi" virus-are emphasized. Several important pathogenic mechanisms common for various hemorrhagic

Local factors associated with on-host flea distributions on prairie dog colonies.

Outbreaks of plague, a flea-vectored bacterial disease, occur periodically in prairie dog populations in the western United States. In order to understand the conditions that are conducive to plague outbreaks and potentially predict spatial and temporal variations in risk, it is important to understand the factors associated with flea abundance and distribution that may lead to plague outbreaks. We collected and identified 20,041 fleas from 6,542 individual prairie dogs of four different species over a 4-year period along a latitudinal gradient from Texas to Montana. We assessed local climate

Generation of Mouse Spermatogonial Stem-Cell-Colonies in A Non-Adherent Culture.

OBJECTIVE: The properties of self-renewal and division in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) support spermatogenesis. There is a number of reported methods for in vitro SSC culture systems. The development of a culture system that effectively supports isolation and selfrenewal of germline stem cells (GSCs) is of tremendous benefit for clinical trials, experimental research, and as potential treatment for male infertility. The current study aims to consider the cultivation and behavior of GSCs in a non-adherent culture system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, we cultured testic

Abatacept and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and neutropenia.

Neutropenia in patients with inflammatory diseases increases the risk of infection due to the disease itself and the related immunosuppressive treatments. We report the case of a 54-year-old female with rheumatoid arthritis and following development of chronic neutropenia. All investigations excluded pathogenic relations with drugs and/or other clinical situations; the gravity of neutropenia required a treatment with G-CSF and the increased articular inflammatory activity justified a biologic-therapy, abatacept (CTLA4 inhibitors). The juxtaposition of immunostimulants and immunosuppressors led

Control of Hymenolepis nana infection as a measure to improve mouse colony welfare.

After cannibalism had appeared in the reproductive units of a white mouse colony, treatment against confirmed Hymenolepis nana, a tapeworm with zoonotic potential, was performed on 67 mice in the reproductive and nursery units. Faecal droppings were evaluated by flotation and sedimentation methods. The sedimentation method revealed a higher number of positive results before, during and after the treatment, but the flotation method yielded some additional positive cases. In the reproductive unit, H. nana eggs were confirmed in 50% of the tested mice by the flotation and in 70% by the sedimentat

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in repeated IVF failure, a randomized trial.

Recent studies have revealed key roles for granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) in embryo implantation process and maintenance of pregnancy, and some studies showed promising results by using local intrauterine infusion of GCSF in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). This multicenter, randomized, controlled trial included 112 infertile women with repeated IVF failure to evaluate the efficacy of systemic single-dose subcutaneous GCSF administration on IVF success in these women. In this study, the Long Protocol of ovarian stimulation was used for all participants. Sealed, n

The influence of locally applied granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on osteoporotic bone.

OBJECTIVES: The compromised capacity of bone healing in osteoporotic population renders a serious concern of patients and clinicians. This study aimed to investigate the influence of G-CSF on bone reconstruction using an osteoporotic animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty skeletal mature female Spraque-Dawley rats underwent bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) and were assigned into three groups (n = 20). Three months after OVX, defects of 5 mm in cranial and 2 mm in femur were surgically created on all the animals. The defects were left unfilled, filled with gelatin sponge (GS), or filled with gr

Evaluation of growth and foraging in laboratory colonies of Coptotermes gestroi (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae).

Coptotermes gestroi is an exotic species in Brazil that forages on several food items at the same time. Different laboratory tests were performed with 6-year-old colonies of this termite in order to follow the development and displacement of these colonies, considering which castes and instars were transferred or moved from their original chamber. Two bioassays were carried out, one with similar alternative foods (Pinus sp. sawdust), and the other with different alternative foods (large block of Pinus taeda and small block of Pinus elliottii). The colonies of C. gestroi did not show preference

Parasites and Pathogens of the Honeybee (Apis mellifera) and Their Influence on Inter-Colonial Transmission.

Pathogens and parasites may facilitate their transmission by manipulating host behavior. Honeybee pathogens and pests need to be transferred from one colony to another if they are to maintain themselves in a host population. Inter-colony transmission occurs typically through honeybee workers not returning to their home colony but entering a foreign colony ("drifting"). Pathogens might enhance drifting to enhance transmission to new colonies. We here report on the effects infection by ten honeybee viruses and Nosema spp., and Varroa mite infestation on honeybee drifting. Genotyping of workers c

Infestation of research zebra finch colony with 2 novel mite species.

A zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) housed in a neuroscience laboratory was observed to have numerous feather mites. Subsequently, similar mites were found on other birds in the animal facility and research space. The most abundant mite was a novel, undescribed species in the genus Neocheyletiella. Whereas known Neocheyletiella mites have previously been characterized as skin parasites of various birds worldwide, the species on the zebra finches is unique because it lives and builds nests in the feathers. Infrequent specimens of a 'true' feather mite, a new species of Megninialges, were presen
