OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk indicators of tooth loss in Jordanian adults.
METHODS: A sample of 509 Jordanian adults was randomly selected. The subjects were interviewed regarding demographics, social economic status, smoking habits, and oral hygiene practices and then clinically examined by a single examiner. Multiple regression analysis was performed to estimate the simultaneous impact of risk indicators on tooth loss.
RESULTS: The subjects' mean age was 42.6 years with an average of 20.9 teeth remaining per person. The overall educational level of the sub

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate caries-preventive treatment practices in relation to caries state and eruption of first permanent molars (FPMs) among 6-year-olds (n = 3489) examined and treated in public dental clinics in Helsinki during 1992.
METHODS: The study subjects were selected on the basis of their caries state using a two-point study design: the high-caries group (n = 99) had the greatest number of DT + dt, the cavity-free group (n = 32) had neither past nor present caries. Evaluation of dentists' caries-preventive treatment decisions was based on data from detailed personal oral health reco

OBJECTIVES: To describe: (1) the 24-month incidence of tooth loss in a diverse sample of dentate adults; and (2) the clinical, attitudinal, behavioral, and sociodemographic correlates of tooth loss incidence.
METHODS: The Florida Dental Care Study is a prospective longitudinal cohort study of persons who at baseline had at least one tooth, were 45 years or older, and who resided in north Florida. An in-person interview and clinical examination were conducted at baseline and 24-months after baseline, with 6-monthly telephone interviews between those times. A two-level hierarchical generalized

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study was conducted to describe the incidence of tooth extraction in a group of regularly attending adults and to assess factors that are predictive of tooth loss.
METHODS: Baseline and annual incremental clinical data were obtained from 23 general dental practitioners on a group of their regularly attending, dentate adult patients over a 5-year period. The patients completed a postal questionnaire with questions relating to dental health behaviours, attitudes and knowledge, and social factors.
RESULTS: Complete clinical data were obtained from 2799 patients. Fou

Differences in the tooth and tooth surface survival rates between four cohorts born in 1965, 1970, 1975, and 1980 were analysed in a historical cohort study including data on the permanent teeth of children aged 5-7 years at baseline and 19 years at the end of the study. A statistically significant reduction in caries occurrence in fissured surfaces in the three oldest cohorts was seen during the 3 years after the eruption of the teeth. Caries occurrence in the cohorts born in 1975 and 1980 did not differ from each other. The occurrence of caries in smooth surfaces was low in all age cohorts.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation for changes in behavior due to research participants' knowledge that behavior is being observed (also referred to as a Hawthorne effect or reactivity) has received little attention in the dental literature. The Florida Dental Care Study, a prospective, non-randomized, longitudinal study of oral health outcomes, provides some inferential power to evaluate for an effect on dental care use due to participants' knowledge that this behavior was being observed. The purpose of this paper is to document that an observation effect can occur in dental studies, and to estimate its

UNLABELLED: Swallowed fluoride toothpaste in the early years of life has been postulated to be a risk factor for fluorosis, but the epidemiological evidence is weakened by the fact that most of the relevant studies were done in developed countries where an individual is exposed to multiple sources of fluoride.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the risk of fluorosis from fluoride toothpaste in a population whose only potential source of fluoride was fluoride toothpaste.
METHODS: Case-control analyses were conducted to test the hypothesis that fluoride toothpaste use before the age of 6 years increased

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between self-reported oral handicap as measured by socio-dental indicators and both dental state and felt need for dental treatment in a group of frail and functionally dependent older adults. A total of 263 housebound adults over the age of 60 years were investigated with regard to their self-reported dental handicap using the socio-dental indices derived by Locker (Community Dent Health 1992;9:109-24). Of these, 117 were in long-stay residential facilities, 67 in sheltered housing and 79 in private housing. The majority were fema

Research is needed to establish what nomenclature and case definition for early childhood caries (ECC) are most relevant to health care professionals and to the public. Profiles or indexes for predicting the prevalence of ECC in communities should be developed on the basis of the socioeconomic factors, immigrant status and ethnic/racial backgrounds of populations. Future research should target risk factors of ECC, particularly prenatal and perinatal histories, nutritional status and microbiologic factors. Determining the relation of malnutrition of infants and young children, low birthweight,

Oral submucous fibrosis is a high risk precancerous condition and is suggested to be caused by areca nut chewing. Areca nut chewing is popular in Hunan Province of China, and is more concentrated in Xiangtan City. Two and nine cases of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) were first noticed in 1984 and 1985 respectively, and an epidemiologic survey was subsequently performed in 1986. The epidermiologic method of cluster sampling was used. The Yuhu District, one of the five urban districts of the Xiangtan City with a population of 100,000 was selected as a whole body in the survey, 57 independent unit

The prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in Malaysia was determined by examining a representative sample of 11,707 subjects aged 25 years and above throughout the 14 states over a period of 5 months during 1993/1994. A two-stage stratified random sampling was undertaken. A predetermined number of enumeration blocks, the smallest population unit in the census publication, was selected from each state. With the selected enumeration block, a systematic sample of living quarters was chosen with a random start. The survey instrument included a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics and a c

Knowledge about age-related changes in attitudes to dental appearance and orthodontic treatment may guide the orthodontist in educating and providing advice to potential patients and their parents. The purpose of the present study was to compare attitudes to malocclusion in groups of young and middle-aged adults from populations having been exposed to similar provision of care. The material comprised samples of orthodontically untreated 18-yr-olds (n = 50) and 35-yr-olds (n = 73) from Oslo, Norway. From a clinical examination, radiographs, and measurements on dental study casts, the subjects w

1386, 5-6-yr-old and 1326, 12-yr-old schoolchildren in the mainly rural province of Matebeleland South, in Zimbabwe, were examined for dental caries and interviewed about their oral hygiene practices. Fluoride contents of the drinking water source of the schools were determined and were found to be in the range 0.05-2.5 ppm. Among 5-6-yr-old children, 25.2% were affected with caries and the mean dmft score was 0.6 whereas 19.8% of the 12-yr-old children had caries, and the mean dmft score was 0.3. In both age groups low fluoride levels in drinking water (<0.8 ppm) were associated with higher p

This investigation studied the dental health status of a group of 184 Australian Aboriginal children with a mean age of 4.4 +/- 0.8 years, who were attending pre-schools in metropolitan Brisbane, a non-fluoridated state capital city. The DDE (Developmental Defects of Enamel) Index was used to chart enamel hypoplasia and enamel opacities. WHO criteria was used to diagnose dental caries. The results showed that 98% of children had at least one tooth showing developmental enamel defects. Each child had a mean of 3.8 +/- 1.7 teeth affected by enamel hypoplasia and another 1.1 +/- 0.8 teeth affecte

Prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis was assessed in 1739 Singaporean children aged 9, 12 and 16 yr in three different ethnic groups. All subjects had resided since birth in Singapore, which has a tropical climate. The water supply was fluoridated in 1957 at a level of 0.7 ppm. In this sample, mouth prevalence was 82.6%, tooth prevalence was 66.9%, the community fluorosis index was at 1.96; 9.2% of children had severe fluorosis and 26.2% had moderate fluorosis. There were no significant gender or racial differences. Prevalences were higher than those reported in most other studies. Due

This study aimed to provide oral epidemiological data describing periodontal destruction among older adults in South Australia. A cross-sectional survey design was employed and periodontal assessments were made among 801 persons aged 6+ drawn at random from the non-institutionalized population. Measurements of pocket depth (PD) and gingival recession (GR) were made at three sites on all teeth and used to compute loss of attachment (LOA). An average of 17 teeth per person were measured. LOA of 4+ mm at one or more sites was observed among 89.1% of persons. A mean of 78.1% of sites per person ha
