Developing and implementing a large-scale summit to improve health services delivery for rural, remote and Indigenous populations.

Inequities persist in health services delivery for rural, remote and Indigenous populations internationally. These populations require attention to improve health outcomes for individuals, communities, providers and the health system. Strong collaboration and trusting relationships in rural and Indigenous communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada enabled rapid health services delivery changes in rural BC in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, the Rural Coordination Centre of BC and First Nations Health Authority co-hosted the BC Rural and First Nations Health and Wellness Summi

Does co-location of medication assisted treatment and prenatal care for women with opioid use disorder increase pregnancy planning, length of interpregnancy interval, and postpartum contraceptive uptake?

INTRODUCTION: Women with opioid use disorder have higher rates of unplanned pregnancies, shorter interpregnancy intervals and lower rates of contraceptive use compared to women without substance use disorders. This contributes to worse perinatal and reproductive health outcomes for this population. It has been suggested that co-location of medication assisted treatment (MAT) and reproductive health services could allow for improved outcomes among women with substance use disorders. The aim of this study was to determine if location where women received MAT influenced their pregnancy planning,

Preventing avian influenza in humans: the role of simple public health interventions.

An influenza pandemic due to influenza virus A H5N1 subtype is considered highly likely. Strategies for prevention and control of a pandemic include actions that need to be taken by the national authorities and communities. The availability of a vaccine and antiviral drugs in sufficient quantities for billions of people in the developing world is doubtful. Simple cost effective public health interventions can significantly reduce the risk of contracting infection. These interventions include precautions that will prevent people from contracting infection from sick or dying poultry and their pr

Profile of young people's advice clinic in reproductive health, 1988-93.

For an unprepared sexually active teenager the 1990s present a minefield of potential problems in addition to the most obvious problems of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Promoting the importance of a healthy sexual and reproductive life to young people requires openness, better sex education, realistic discussion of related issues, and provision of contraception, as well as support if things go wrong. The Woodhouse Park Clinic in south Manchester opened in October 1988 with the aim of providing weekly advice sessions to young people up to the age of 18. Advice is given o

Transitions to Care in the Community for Prison Releasees with HIV: a Qualitative Study of Facilitators and Challenges in Two States.

One in seven people living with HIV in the USA passes through a prison or jail each year, and almost all will return to the community. Discharge planning and transitional programs are critical but challenging elements in ensuring continuity of care, maintaining treatment outcomes achieved in prison, and preventing further viral transmission. This paper describes facilitators and challenges of in-prison care, transitional interventions, and access to and continuity of care in the community in Rhode Island and North Carolina based on qualitative data gathered as part of the mixed-methods Link In

Social Work-Supported Strategies to Reduce Postoperative Readmissions in Orthopedic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg

Beyond individual-level approaches to dementia prevention: a socioecological reappraisal.

Dementia prevention has largely focused on modifying individual behavioural and clinical risk factors. Although this approach has advanced understanding of dementia risk, it could under-recognise the broad social, environmental, and structural conditions that shape brain health across the life course. In this Viewpoint, we apply the socioecological model, a well established public health framework, to map 61 modifiable dementia risk and protective factors identified in the published population-attributable fraction literature across four levels of influence: individual, interpersonal, communit

Testing in two pandemics: community perspectives on HIV testing during COVID-19 in NYC.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted healthcare systems, including access to HIV testing services. In 2021, community organizations participating in a NYC HIV testing initiative reported a substantial decline in HIV testing between 2019 and 2020. To examine how providers adapted during this period, Health Department staff conducted stakeholder interviews and focus groups to identify the underlying causes of this testing decline. Providers described both enabling and obstructive factors in delivering services during the pandemic. Telehealth, cross-training, service bundling and flexibl
