Reaching the unreached: Building resilience through engagement with diverse communities.

The Department of Homeland Security Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships (DHS Center) is one of 13 federal centres whose mandate is to engage faith-based and community groups with governments in the delivery of human services. Working alongside local jurisdictions, over the past five years, the DHS Center developed the Building Resilience with Diverse Communities (BRDC) engagement process to improve relationships with faith-based and community organisations and to 'reach unreached' populations in emergency preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. BRDC works to improve com

Commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of children in the United States.

Child commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking are global health problems requiring a multidisciplinary approach by individuals, organizations, communities, and national governments. The adverse emotional, physical, and social consequences for victims are legion and in many areas of the United States and the rest of the world, victim resources are scarce. Since violence, deprivation, abuse, and infection are so integral to the exploitation experience, victims may present for care to community and academic pediatric and adolescent health care providers. It is essential that medical pr

Community Asset Mapping: Promoting Inclusion and Equity and Countering Stigma in Applied Substance Use Research.

People Who Use Substances (PWUS) are among the most stigmatised groups in society. Stigma associated with substance use is known to be detrimental to the individual's wellbeing, and substance use is often used as a mechanism by policy makers and services to legitimise exclusion. PWUS often do not benefit from the drug and alcohol services that are available to them. Community Asset Mapping (CAM) is a strengths-based approach involving the re-engagement of communities through active involvement in research. There are criticisms and concerns about equity and the burden on participants involved i

Distributed Event-Triggered Algorithm Designs for Resource Allocation Problems via a Universal Scalar Function-Based Analysis.

In this article, we are concerned with distributed algorithm designs for resource allocation problems via event-triggered communication. The target is to search an optimal resource allocation scheme such that the summation of objective functions is minimized. Due to communication efficiency and privacy concerns, distributed algorithms with event-triggered communications are proposed in this article. The communication is only permitted or triggered if variation of gradient of the local objective function exceeds a threshold. By constructing a novel technical lemma and a universal scalar functio

The POWER of LEARNing and LEADing Together: Shared Learning Communities.

Southern community-based organizations often lack adequate resources to implement high-quality, culturally appropriate HIV programs and services. Shared learning communities (SLCs) combine in-depth training, tailored coaching, and peer-to-peer learning to strengthen HIV programs and services. This paper describes five SLCs, participant characteristics, and their capacity-building components.

PhysioNet As A Global Platform for Biomedical Research.

PhysioNet (www.physionet.org), a public platform for sharing biomedical and clinical data, has become a foundational resource for data-driven health research. Created in 1999 as an outreach component of an NIH-funded research project to host physiological signals contributed primarily by a team of Boston-area collaborators, it has since grown into a global repository hosting more than 400 published resources and supporting over 190,000 registered users. PhysioNet resources now span physiological waveforms, structured electronic health records, clinical text, imaging data, annotations, and soft

Long-term studies should provide structure for inclusive education and professional development.

Long-term studies are critical for ecological understanding, but they are underutilized as inclusive opportunities for training ecologists. We use our perspective from the Año Nuevo elephant seal programme along with surveys from community members to propose that long-term studies could be better leveraged to promote inclusive education and professional development in ecology. Drawing on our experiences as mentors and mentees, we demonstrate how long-term studies can use their resources, including rich data, robust logistics and extensive professional networks, to improve recruitment and reten

Uncovering the World of Dietary Supplements and Performance-Enhancing Substances in the Military.

This article highlights key topic areas related to dietary supplements (DSs) and performance-enhancing substances. It also discusses evidence-based resources the medical community can use when discussing high-quality DSs with Servicemembers interested in taking DSs. We briefly overview how DSs are regulated in the United States, discuss problematic categories and issues related to quality, expand upon what are often considered performance-enhancing substances yet sometimes sold as DSs, and then offer solutions to counter the consequences of the dark side of the DS industry. Solutions include t

Predictors of Health in Substance Use Disorder Recovery: Economic Stability in Residential Aftercare Environments.

The exit from active substance use presents barriers to achieving and maintaining health, especially as individuals lack the economic resources to afford healthcare access. Treatment settings that strengthen resources may support stability in recovery and influence health. Analyzing a sample of recovery home residents over two years (N = 494), the current study assessed individually held resources (e.g., wages, employment) and the average economic conditions of a resident's house (e.g., house employment rate) to understand their association with self-reported health status. Employment status,

The pitfalls of bioterrorism preparedness: the anthrax and smallpox experiences.

Bioterrorism preparedness programs have contributed to death, illness, and waste of public health resources without evidence of benefit. Several deaths and many serious illnesses have resulted from the smallpox vaccination program; yet there is no clear evidence that a threat of smallpox exposure ever existed. The anthrax spores released in 2001 have been linked to secret US military laboratories-the resultant illnesses and deaths might not have occurred if those laboratories were not in operation. The present expansion of bioterrorism preparedness programs will continue to squander health res

Perspectives Toward COVID-19 Sanctions in the Orthodox Jewish Community in Brooklyn and Queens: A Qualitative Study of Medical Providers Experience.

The Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jewish Community in New York City suffered significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The community came under public scrutiny after some members staunchly advocated for reopening of certain resources central to community culture. This study utilizes qualitative techniques to examine the perspectives of medical providers that serve the Haredi community toward pandemic-related government sanctions, as well as the resultant effects the restrictions had on community receipt of healthcare. We interviewed 15 community-based healthcare providers regarding their experienc

A Systematic Review of Professionals' Views About Community Management Policies for Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses.

A contentious criminal justice policy issue in recent times has been community management policies for individuals convicted of sexual offenses. This systematic review attained professionals' views, areas of concern, and recommendations for community management policies. It went beyond the extant literature by exploring perceptions of heterogenous professional groups involved in the criminal justice system. Of the 25 studies, 12 were quantitative, nine qualitative, and four mixed methods, and included custodial and community correctional officers, probation officers, psychologists, police offi

From Awareness to Action: The Community of Sarnia Mobilizes to Protect its Workers from Occupational Disease.

An exploratory qualitative case study investigated how different sectors of a highly industrialized community mobilized in the 1990s to help workers exposed to asbestos. For this study, thirty key informants including representatives from industry, workers, the community, and local politicians participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The analysis was framed by a "Dimensions of Community Change" model. The informants highlighted the importance of raising awareness, and the need for leadership, social and organizational networks, acquiring skills and resources, individual and

An integrated system of community services for the rehabilitation of chronic psychiatric patients in Shenyang, China.

The evolution of the Zhengyang Community Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre described in this paper proves that community-based mental health services initiated and developed by enthusiastic and committed community members can be successful in the Chinese setting. The most important step is to utilise community resources to secure a stable source of income, preferably by establishing a profitable welfare enterprise that can both finance the provision of other services and provide work for mentally ill clients who cannot obtain regular employment. The ultimate goal is to reintroduce as many cl…

[World Health Organization places psychiatry high on the agenda, also consequences for the Netherlands].

In October 2001 the World Health Organization (WHO) devoted its yearly World Health Report to psychiatry under the title 'Mental health: new understanding, new hope'.
