Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) is characterized by haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. Immunoglobulins IgA, IgG and IgM and complement factors C3 and C4 have been measured in a population of premature infants to evaluate their degree of immunological maturity. All the infants were receiving complete parenteral nutrition. In parallel, the same parameters were measured in twenty two full term, healthy neonates. Complement conversions and a pulmonary leukocyte sequestration were observed during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in all of twenty patients who received open heart surgery. A systemic neutropenia was initially observed in the early phase of CPB, and it subsequently turned into a systemic neutrocytosis during the late phase of it. BACKGROUND: A 61-year-old woman with an 8-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus presented with a non-pruritic, erythematous, malar rash. Previously, she had tested positive for antinuclear antibody and autoantibodies to double-stranded DNA and Ro/SSA, and had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The divalent cation Zn2+ enhanced the lysis of sheep erythrocytes (ShE) by guinea pig C4-deficient (C4D) serum. Enhancement by Zn2+ (0.1 mM) was demonstrated in the presence of cobra venom factor (CoVF, 2 units/ml) and optimal Mg2+ (1.0 mM). 52 symptomatic (SPB) and 64 asymptomatic (APB) pigeon breeders were investigated for the HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR; C2, C3, C4 and Bf systems, and C3, C4 and factor B serum concentrations. A prospective study of children with measles has shown a significant association between malnutrition and a poor prognosis. Levels of a number of complement components bore no relationship to the severity of the disease or to its prognosis. Some of the children with acute measles had depressed serum concentrations of factor D, Clq or C3, but complement deficiency does not appear to be implicated in the heightened susceptibility to secondary bacterial and viral infection so commonly found after acute measles.
