The serological prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle in Malawi is unknown. Serum samples from 200 Malawian zebu cattle were tested for C. burnetii antibodies using the complement fixation test. The percentage of positive and suspicious titres was 1.5% and 5% respectively.

Further pathophysiological studies of the hypotensive shock syndrome associated with acute Babesia bovis infection in cattle have demonstrated changes in the plasma concentrations of conglutinin, complement C3, fibronectin and immunoconglutinin. Decreases in the first three components are presumably due to their contribution towards intravascular sludging of infected erythrocytes within the microvascular system during the acute phase of infection. In contrast, the increase in fibronectin and immunoconglutinin in the recovery phase suggests the involvement of these proteins in the reticulo-endo

The Clq assay for antigen-antibody complexes was performed on 79 blood samples from 43 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). The results were compared with assays for the activation products of C3 (C3c,d), for the concentration of C3, for rheumatoid factor, and for antinuclear antibodies. A statistically significant association was found between Clq binding and positive tests for latex fixation and C3c,d in systemic and polyarticular JRA, but positive results of each assay were found independently. These 3 assays were usually negative in pauciarticular JRA. No relationship was fou

In agar gel double-diffusion and complement fixation tests with sera from patients with proven cases of histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, or coccidioidomycosis, these two fractions of H antigen and the one of M antigen reacted only with sera from proven or suspect cases of histoplasmosis and showed reactivity …

The fixation of the first component of complement (C'1a) by human antibodies and human cells has been studied by the use of the C'1a fixation and transfer test (C'1a FT test) of Borsos and Rapp.Cold agglutinin antibodies appear to require no more than one antibody molecule to fix one molecule of C'1a. Most warm agglutinin antibodies are IgG in immunoglobulin type and require at least two molecules of antibody to fix a molecule of C'1a. Donath-Landsteiner antibody has the same requirements for C'1a fixation. A single example of a warm agglutinin antibody which appears to require one molecule of

Previous experiments have shown that a mixture of cardiolipin and cholesterol in absolute ethanol (named "cardchol") might be used as an antigen in complement-fixation tests. The reactivity in the complement-fixation test of CWRM (an "ordinary" cardiolipin antigen) was compared with that of cardchol in several experiments, and it could be demonstrated that the reactivity of cardchol was especially pronounced in sera from false-positive reactors. In about 50% of such cases, quantitative determination of the antibody content showed that cardchol was more reactive than CWRM, whereas in syphilitic

Sera of forty insulin-treated Nigerian diabetics attending the outpatients clinic of the University College Hospital (U.C.H.), Ibadan, and an equal number of non-diabetic control subjects matched for age, sex and social status were tested for presence of complement fixing (CF) antibodies against five viruses: Coxsackie A and B1, mumps rubella and enterovirus group antigen. Antibody levels to Coxsackie B1, mumps, rubella and enterovirus did not show any significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). The serum levels of antibody to Coxsackie A virus were significantly higher in non-di

The in vitro addition of mice or human unparasited scale extracts to the serum of 8 patients with scabies and 5 healthy controls did not significantly modify the fixation of 125I-C1q as compared to control tubes (serum with physiological saline). These results suggest that antigens or substances derived from the scabies mite are not involved in the immune complexes present in the serum of the parasited patients.

A modification of the [125I]C1q binding assay was developed to allow the estimation of C1q binding activity (C1q BA) in pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid sera. The modifications include lower final concentration of PEG 6000 (1-5%) which permitted the use of sera that had been stored at -20 degrees C for extended periods of time; use of 131I instead of 125I and an [131I] C1q concentration of 5 microng/ml rather than 1 microng/ml. EDTA was used at a final concentration of 0-13 M to obviate the need for heat inactivation of sera. Sera from seventy-one patients with pemphigus and from 142 patients

In the autologous phase of nephrotoxic induced by sheep antibody to glomerular basement membrane (GBM) in Dunkin-Hartley and C4 deficient strain guinea-pigs, less than 50% of animals developed proteinuria at the height of the autologous antibody response despite high anti-sheep immunolglobulin tetres and fixation of guinea-pig IgG and complement in the kidney. tonly two of thirty-sdven animals (5-4%) developed progressive. In a passive model of autologous phase injury using high titres rabbit antibody to sheep IgG, proteinuria failed to occur despite fixation of up to 95 microng rabbit antibod

Antibody response to Campylobacter jejuni/coli infections in man was studied by microagglutination assay against homologues organisms isolated from patients and by complement fixation test against a commercially available group-specific antigen of C. jejuni/coli. Titers of agglutinating antibodies raise within 1-2 weeks post infectionem (p.i.) to an extent of about 320 (reciprocal titer) and persist about 3-4 months. CF-antibody titers raise only to about 40 but they persist for a long time. Because of the low titers in the CF-test and because of a missing seroconversion the CF-test is not sui

Several epidemics of febrile illnesses associated with haemorrhagic manifestations occurred in India during 1963 and 1964. These epidemics were restricted to the eastern coastal areas. However, in northern India, for the first time, a widespread epidemic of febrile illness associated with haemorrhagic manifestations occurred at Kanpur in 1968. In the present study, the virological findings of the epidemic are reported. The role of dengue type 4 virus in the epidemic is demonstrated by the isolation of the virus from a number of cases, including one with haematemesis, and conversion of antibody
