Emotion recognition in cross-linguistic legal context: a comparison between human-based and computational approaches.

Emotion shapes credibility assessments, judicial decision-making, and perceptions of procedural justice, yet its reliable detection in courtroom settings remains a significant methodological challenge. This study provides a multimethod evaluation of emotion-recognition approaches in cross-linguistic legal discourse using a corpus of 20 Chinese and English courtroom video clips. Eighty-eight bilingual observers provided continuous valence ratings, completed post-task Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) assessments, and contributed electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate variabilit

Uncertainty CNNs: A path to enhanced medical image classification performance.

The automated detection of tumors using medical imaging data has garnered significant attention over the past decade due to the critical need for early and accurate diagnoses. This interest is fueled by advancements in computationally efficient modeling techniques and enhanced data storage capabilities. However, methodologies that account for the uncertainty of predictions remain relatively uncommon in medical imaging. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is important as it helps decision-makers gauge their confidence in predictions and consider variability in the model inputs. Numerous determinist

MicroRNAs in neurodegenerative diseases: from molecular mechanisms to clinical biomarkers, detection methods and therapeutic strategies-advances and challenges.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) pose significant challenges in early detection and treatment due to their complex pathophysiology and heterogeneous clinical presentations. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression, have emerged as promising diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets in NDDs. Pathological examination of affected tissues reveals early synaptic dysfunction, protein misfolding, and neuroinflammation occur prior to overt clinical symptoms, highlighting the importance of sensitive diagnostics approaches in prodromal stages. This review summarizes fo

A Review on Blood Flow Simulation in Stenotically Diseased Arteries.

Heart diseases which can lead to stroke and heart attacks, affect numerous individuals worldwide due to disruptions in blood flow within the body. A common underlying cause for such hemodynamic disorders is a constriction in the artery, which is known as a stenosis, which is attributable to a range of causes including atherosclerosis or plaque accumulation. Many theoretical and computational studies have been presented in this area providing a useful compliment to experimental (clinical) studies. These studies have benefited clinical practice by providing insights into complex fluid dynamics a

Development and OECD-Guided Experimental Validation of Eigenvalue-Based QSAR Models for Skin Permeation.

In silico methods such as quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) are widely used in drug development for prescreening of 'drug-likeness'. Most of these tools correlate biological properties to two-dimensional (2D) descriptors, which do not account for important structural elements pertaining to three-dimensional (3D) geometry and shape. To address this, we have developed the 'EigenValue Analysis' (EVANS) methodology, a variant of QSAR in which descriptors are computed as a hybrid of 2D physicochemical properties and 3D geometry. Having previously applied EVANS to build QSAR mode

Modulation of mind wandering using transcranial direct current stimulation: A meta-analysis based on electric field modeling.

Mind wandering (MW) is a heterogeneous construct involving task-unrelated thoughts. Recently, the interest in modulating MW propensity via non-invasive brain stimulation techniques has increased. Single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in healthy controls has led to mixed results in modulating MW propensity, possibly due to methodological heterogeneity. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a systematic meta-analysis to examine the influence of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) and right inferior parietal lobule (rIPL) targeted tDCS on MW propensity. Importantly, b

Quantifying the Energetics of Protein-Mediated Stabilization of Membrane Deformation.

Membrane curvature plays a central role in a wide range of biological processes, yet a quantitative and transferable description of its underlying energetics remains challenging. In this work, we develop a "reaction coordinate" within the Umbrella-Sampling framework to compute the free-energy cost associated with local membrane bending in both coarse-grained and atomistic simulations. The methodology is systematically validated across diverse lipid environments, including pure bilayers with varying tail unsaturation, tail length, and headgroup chemistry, where it reproduces established trends

Gate-Tunable GeSe/MoSe2 Heterojunctions for In-Sensor Image Processing.

The physical separation of sensing and processing units in traditional vision systems creates latency and energy-efficiency bottlenecks. In-sensor computing, capable of processing visual information directly in the analog domain, offers a promising solution. Herein, we report a high-performance, gate-tunable GeSe/MoSe2 van der Waals heterostructure designed for simultaneous light sensing and in-sensor computing. By engineering a Type-II band alignment at the heterointerface, the device achieves efficient charge separation, thereby enabling the suppression of dark current and effective gate tun

Simulative structure and binding sites of lyral with olfactory receptor 10J5 using computational prediction methods.

Olfactory receptor (OR) genes are extensively distributed throughout the human organism. Although these receptors are predominantly located in the olfactory epithelium, binding between odorant chemicals and corresponding ORs initiates downstream events in other tissues. In particular, exposure to allergen fragrances results in the induction of contact dermatitis. At present, current methodologies are limited in their ability to predict the consequences of fragrancy chemicals on humans. The aim of this study was designed to simulate the bindingstructure between lyral and OR10J5, a known allerge

Texture Analysis and Synthesis of Malignant and Benign Mediastinal Lymph Nodes in Patients with Lung Cancer on Computed Tomography.

Texture analysis of computed tomography (CT) imaging has been found useful to distinguish subtle differences, which are in- visible to human eyes, between malignant and benign tissues in cancer patients. This study implemented two complementary methods of texture analysis, known as the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and the experimental semivariogram (SV) with an aim to improve the predictive value of evaluating mediastinal lymph nodes in lung cancer. The GLCM was explored with the use of a rich set of its derived features, whereas the SV feature was extracted on real and synthesized C
