Correlates of condom use and number of sexual partners among high school adolescents.

Factors associated with condom use and number of sexual partners were examined in a statewide sample of public high school students in grades 9-12 (N = 3,893). Data were collected in spring 1990 using the 70-item, self-report Youth Risk Behavior Survey, developed and piloted by the Centers for Disease Control. Composite scores were constructed to measure aggression, physical recklessness, alcohol use, illegal drug use, cigarette use, lack of exercise, and academic self-image. Since simple polychotomous logistic regression models revealed a significant race by gender interaction, multivariate m

Update on pregnancy, condom use, and prevalence of selected sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents.

Adolescent pregnancy and its consequences continue as major sources of morbidity in the United States. A teenager who becomes a parent is at a significant disadvantage in becoming a contributing adult, both psychosocially and economically. The physician who cares for adolescents has the responsibility of helping parenting teens to find needed support so that they will be able to overcome this significant hurdle. Attention from public agencies has focused on increasing condom use as one approach to adolescent pregnancy prevention. The major advantage of using condoms is that they also prevent t…

Consistency of condom use for disease prevention among adolescent users of oral contraceptives.

A six-month prospective study examined consistency of condom use for disease prevention among 308 adolescent women who had received a prescription for oral contraceptives at a family planning clinic. Only 16 percent used condoms consistently over a six-month period, yet 30 percent were considered at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) because of multiple, sequential or concurrent relationships with male partners. The type of relationship in which the adolescents were involved did not predict consistency of condom use. Consistent condom use was associated with having asked a part…

Allergy to rubber condom urinals and medical adhesives in male spinal injury patients.

In the National Spinal Injuries Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, rubber condom urinals, kept on the penis with a medical adhesive, are used for incontinent male patients where possible. However, contact allergy to rubber condoms and/or the adhesives is a common problem and can cause considerable morbidity in paralysed patients. This paper investigates the rubber chemicals and adhesives most commonly implicated in causing contact allergy. The survey was divided into two parts: 1. Patch testing symptomatic inpatients 2. A questionnaire sent to new patients from January 1974 to ascertain the ov…

Incidence of acute urinary tract infection in young women and use of male condoms with and without nonoxynol-9 spermicides.

BACKGROUND: Acute urinary tract infection is one of the most common infections seen in primary care. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study among a cohort of 519 women, ages 15-29 years, enrolled in a contraceptive acceptability study to examine whether recent use of male condoms increases urinary tract infection risk. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-five incident urinary tract infections were identified during 12-month follow-up periods in a cohort study that was conducted between 1996 and 1999. After exclusions for urinary tract infection recurrences, pregnancy, antibiotic use, diabe…

Atopy, the use of condoms, and a history of cesarean delivery: potential predisposing factors for latex sensitization in pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess the prevalence of latex sensitization among women admitted for delivery and the relevant risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective study 333 consecutive patients admitted for delivery were screened for specific immunoglobulin E antibodies to latex and for atopic status. A questionnaire was filled in and included questions about the obstetric and surgical history, known contact with latex, and previous use of condoms. RESULTS: Nine of 333 (2.7%) women showed latex-specific immunoglobulin E. All 9 women had atopy (100% vs 26. 2% in the latex-negative gro…

Sexually active HIV-positive patients frequently report never using condoms in audio computer-assisted self-interviews conducted at routine clinical visits.

HIV prevention has become a new priority for HIV clinicians, as their patients live longer and more sexually active lives. Prevention interventions can be effective in clinical settings, but first patients must be screened and inconsistent condom use must be disclosed. Audio computer-assisted self-interviews (ACASI) are an effective way to elicit this sensitive information. We assessed condom use by ACASI among 198 English- or Spanish-speaking HIV patients at 2 community hospital-based HIV clinics in Queens and the Bronx, New York. Among 120 patients reporting sex with a regular partner in the

Relationships between condoms, hormonal methods, and sexual pleasure and satisfaction: an exploratory analysis from the Women's Well-Being and Sexuality Study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how condoms and other contraceptives influence women's sexual enjoyment, which could shape use patterns. METHODS: Data from an online study of women's sexual health and functioning were used to examine how three categories of contraceptive use - hormonal method only, condoms primarily, and dual use - could help predict decreased sexual pleasure associated with contraceptive method and overall sexual satisfaction in the past 4 weeks. RESULTS: In analyses controlling for age, relationship length, and other variables, male condoms were most strongly associated …

Intention to use condoms among three low-income, urban African American subgroups: cocaine users, noncocaine drug users, and non-drug users.

Cocaine use, marijuana use, alcohol use, and polysubstance use (e.g., alcohol and cocaine, alcohol and marijuana) are associated with high-risk sexual behavior and higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The purpose of this study was to examine readiness for using condoms among three groups (cocaine users, noncocaine drug users, and non-drug users) of African Americans living in low-income urban settings. African Americans in this sample differed in sex risk behaviors according to their drug use status. Noncocaine drug users reported higher …

The relationship of substance use with sex to the use of condoms among young adults in two urban areas of Scotland.

The relationship of the use of alcohol or drugs in conjunction with sexual activity and the use of condoms and other contraceptives was examined among 1378 respondents in a household survey of two urban areas of Scotland. In bivariate analyses, respondents who reported having had sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs were no less likely than respondents with no such experience to report consistent use of condoms, and having had sex under the influence of substances was positively related to lifetime condom use. Multivariate analyses that included gender and urban area as predictors yield…

Condom use increased after a peer group intervention implemented by community volunteers in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention remains a global priority, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Our research team previously developed an evidence-based peer group program for HIV prevention called Mzake ndi Mzake (Friend to Friend). A community-engaged collaboration adapted the program for community ownership and implementation. Here we report whether this HIV prevention program, implemented by community volunteers, increased condom use among sexually active individuals in rural Malawi. METHODS: Three communities sequentially rolled out the program. Effectiveness was evaluated using a stepped wedge

Exploring Condom Use Behaviors Among African American Adolescent Boys in the Deep South.

Risky sexual behaviors among adolescents can increase adverse outcomes including unplanned pregnancy or contraction or transmission of disease. Adolescents who engage in risky sexual activities are at increased risk for adverse health and social outcomes compared to those who do not engage. Despite declines in adolescent pregnancy and birth rates, the diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is steadily increasing among adolescents. Moreover, African American adolescent boys in the United States, specifically in the southeastern region are disproportionally at greater risk for STIs,
