Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is an important production limiting disease in cattle. Moraxella bovis has historically been considered the primary causal agent; however, vaccines have not been consistently shown as effective in controlling disease incidence. The purpose of this study was to examine the bacterial community of calf eyes prior to disease onset using high-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA and determine if it was associated with IBK occurrence. The study was designed as a case-control nested within a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Eye swabs were collected

A case of conjunctivitis in a rabbit caused by a Haemophilus sp. is described. This was the only organism that was isolated in large numbers from the infected eye. The uninfected eye of the same rabbit contained Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Proteus mirabilis and a Neisseria sp. Effects of infection with live Haemophilus sp. isolated from the subject rabbit was studied in the eyes of rabbits and mice. Swabbing live organisms in the normal rabbit eye produced blepharitis within 48 hours. Signs of blepharitis started to disappear after 10 days without treatment. No react

Red eyes that fail to respond quickly and completely to topical antibiotic treatment require more extensive evaluation to relieve the symptoms and avert possible sight-threatening complications. The initial differential diagnosis of red eye, which includes iritis, acute glaucoma, keratitis and corneal ulcer, and rarer disorders, must be reexamined. A commonly misdiagnosed cause of red eye is the dry eye syndrome. As a primary or secondary problem, the dry eye syndrome must be treated appropriately to avert sight-threatening complications and to alleviate substantial discomfort. The dry eye syn

Actinomycosis of the lacrimal ducts is a rare chronic infection, caused by bacteria of the genus Actinomyces, usually A. israelii. The analyzed case of a 72-year-old man draws attention to the chronic nature of the infection and the need to thoroughly investigate the microbiological material sampled from the lacrimal ducts. Good effects of treatment resulted from oral use of doxycycline and local application of erythromycin. A precise removal of actinomycotic deposits and the applied antibiotic therapy resulted in a complete recovery without recurrences. The analyzed case confirms incidents in

Necrotizing fasciitis is an exceptional and severe form of subcutaneous gangrene which requires early diagnosis and emergency treatment. We report the case of a 24 year old woman presenting with necrotizing fasciitis after pansinusitis resistant to treatment. The germ detected was pseudomonas aeruginosa. The infection was controled with intensive care, antibiotics and surgical resection of necrotic tissues. The aim of this observation is to highlight the clinical characteristics of this disease, and to insist on the necessity to recognize the early symptoms and to start treatment as soon as po

Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF) is a life-threatening pediatric infection that is preceded by conjunctivitis and caused by a specific strain of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius (BPF clone). BPF was recognized during 1984 in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, when 10 children in a town of 20,000 persons died of an acute febrile illness associated with purpura and vascular collapse. Until December 1989, no cases of BPF had been reported outside of Sao Paulo and the neighboring state of Parana. This report summarizes the recognition and investigation of BPF in the state of Mato Grosso.
