Human contraception: development of new scientific opportunities.

Our current methods of contraception were largely developed in the 1950s and 1960s. Collectively these methods can limit population growth, although their acceptability at a personal level remains marginal. The number of abortions in the UK has risen progressively, from < 130,000 in 1980 to > 170,000 in 1990, and more people have sought sterilization. In global terms, population continues to increase on a scale unrecorded in human history. More than 800 million people, equal to the current population of North America, Europe and Japan, will be added to the world population of 5400 million by t

Contraceptive use by number of living children in Ghana: Evidence from the 2017 maternal health survey.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant literature describing the link between parity and contraceptive use. However, there is limited knowledge about the disaggregation by parity of the type of contraceptives. In this study, we describe the use of contraceptives by parity among women of reproductive age in Ghana, focusing on use of highly effective methods (injection, pill, intrauterine device, implant, and sterilization). METHODS: Using the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health Survey, a nationally-representative cross-sectional household survey, we describe contraceptive method use by number of living chi

The intrauterine contraceptive device: an often-forgotten and maligned method of contraception.

Although 90% of women at risk for unintended pregnancy in the United States use contraception, <1% of these women use the intrauterine contraceptive device. The mechanism of action of intrauterine contraceptive devices has been controversial, but several studies suggest that interference with sperm migration or function and with fertilization may be the most likely mechanisms. More important, there is lack of compelling evidence that the intrauterine contraceptive device acts as an abortifacient. The risk for pelvic inflammatory disease among users now appears to be extremely low, primarily as

Clinical study of Multiload Cu375 in Pakistan.

Three hundred and sixty five volunteers were observed for a total of 4882 woman-months for the clinical evaluation of MLCu375. Data were analyzed by life-table method at 6, 12 and 18 months. Most women were 21-30 years old, and of parity 2-4. Continuation rates of 78.2 and 68.8 at 12 and 18 months, respectively, and a pregnancy rate of 0.3% proved the device to be highly effective and well tolerated.

[First visit for contraception].

The first visit for contraception essentially aims at listening and providing information and counseling. The choice of the contraceptive methods takes into account the contra-indications of the method as well as the patient personnel history, the type of demand, the needs and the fears. For young women, the most preferred choice is the combined pills, very effective and with minima sides effects but other methods (IUD, barrier methods) should be kept in mind. Observance requires proper information and reassurance on side effects particularly on menstruation disorders (amenorrhea, spotting) to

Association Between Oregon's 12-Month Contraceptive Supply Policy and Quantity of Contraceptives Dispensed.

IMPORTANCE: Eighteen states, including Oregon, have passed legislation requiring insurers to cover dispensation of a 12-month supply of short-acting, hormonal contraception. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Oregon's 2016 12-month supply law was associated with an increase in contraceptive supply received. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study of hormonal contraceptive users using Oregon's All Payer All Claims database examined the quantity of contraceptive supply dispensed 3 years before and 3 years after the 2016 policy change. We also assessed changes among patien

Contraception after in vitro fertilisation (IVF): a qualitative study of the views of women who have had spontaneous pregnancies after successful IVF.

BACKGROUND: The use of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) has increased rapidly since its inception in 1978. Women seeking IVF have a wide range of subfertility causes including unexplained subfertility. A growing subgroup of women seek treatment for other reasons than fertility problems, for example, women in same sex relationships and single women. This study aims to better understand the contraceptive needs of women after successful IVF pregnancy in order to improve service delivery and prevent unplanned and rapid-repeat pregnancies. METHODS: A qualitative study of views of women who have had sp

Changes in U.S. Healthcare Provider Practices Related to Emergency Contraception.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency contraception (EC), including EC pills (ECPs) and the copper intrauterine device, can prevent pregnancy after sexual encounters in which contraception was not used or used incorrectly. The U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR), initially released in 2013, provides evidence-based clinical recommendations on the provision of EC. The objective of this analysis was to assess the percentage of health care providers reporting frequent provision of select EC practices around the time of and after the release of the U.S. SPR. METHODS: We condu
