Treatment of convulsive status epilepticus in Brazil: a review.

Status epilepticus (SE) is the most severe presentation of epilepsy. Currently, SE is defined according to 2 sequential time frames: time 1, after which it is unlikely that the seizure will resolve spontaneously, therefore requiring the initiation of therapy; and time 2, when long-term consequences become more likely. For convulsive SE, these time frames are well defined: 5 minutes for time 1 and 30 minutes for time 2. "Time is brain" in the treatment of SE, as delays in diagnosis and treatment are associated with worse outcomes. After clinical stabilization, the first step is the administrati

Sanjad-Sakati Syndrome Revealed by Hypocalcemic Convulsions.

Sanjad-Sakati syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by facial dysmorphia, growth retardation, and congenital hypoparathyroidism. Epidemiologically, this syndrome is primarily observed in children of Arabian descent. However, cases have also been reported in non-Arab countries. Although its exact prevalence is uncertain, the estimated incidence in Saudi Arabia ranges from one in 40,000 to one in 600,000 live births. We report a case of Sanjad-Sakati syndrome in a female infant, born to first-degree consanguineous parents, who presented with convulsive seizures since the age

Management of convulsive status epilepticus: recent updates.

Convulsive status epilepticus (SE) is a medical emergency associated with high morbidity and mortality. Recently, clinical trials and meta-analyses investigating medical treatment of SE have been published. Benzodiazepine is well known as the first-line treatment for SE. Recent evidence suggests the equivalence of intravenous fosphenytoin, valproate, and levetiracetam for treatment of established SE. There is lack of evidence regarding treatment for refractory SE. Intravenous midazolam is commonly used, and recent evidence supports the use of ketamine. Additional studies are needed to improve

Dementia with non-convulsive seizures: a case report.

Non-convulsive seizures (NCSs) are highly treatable, but appropriate management is usually delayed because of inaccurate diagnoses as a result of variable clinical presentations, including an altered mental state. It is difficult to detect NCSs in patients with dementia. We report a case of NCS superimposed on cognitive decline caused by Alzheimer's dementia. The patient's history was carefully recorded. An electroencephalogram was recorded with sphenoidal electrodes, which showed epileptiform discharges in the right mesial temporal lobe and focal, sharply contoured, slow wave activity in the

A case of syncopal convulsions triggered by glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

Syncopal convulsions and epileptic seizures are clinically hard to distinguish and differ in terms of treatment approaches. It is important to consider the cardiac arrhythmias that impair cerebral perfusion in the differential diagnosis of antiepileptic treatment-resistant convulsions. Here we offer a 72 year old male patient glossopharengial neuralgia after swallowing associated with recurrent episodes of syncopal convulsions. The patient was successfully treated with temporary pacemaker and carbamazepine. This phenomenon is noteworthy in terms of both asystole triggered by glossopharengial n

Beneficial Effects of Ibuprofen on Pentylenetetrazol-induced Convulsion.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic. Although some studies have focused on the anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic properties of ibuprofen during febrile convulsions, only one has investigated its antiepileptic effects. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of ibuprofen in rats exposed to pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizures. In total, 48 rats were randomly divided in two groups: Group A for electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and Group B for behavioral assessment. All

Febrile convulsions increase risk of Tourette syndrome.

PURPOSE: Febrile convulsion (FC) and Tourette syndrome (TS) are both common neurological disorders in infants and children. Both disorders share clinical similarities, such as paroxysmal symptoms with normal neurodevelopment and expected remission over time. This population-based study investigated the association between FC with TS during childhood neurodevelopment. METHOD: We used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to conduct a retrospective cohort analysis on 1586 FC patients. A reference cohort of 6344 non-FC patients, matched for age, sex, urbanization level, parental

[Cerebral nocardiosis as surprising cause of a convulsive seizure].

Underlying a convulsive seizure of an adult patient many different types of cause can be detected, such as alcohol withdrawal, disturbance of the cerebral circulation, cerebral hemorrhage, brain tumor, metabolic disturbances, drugs or infection. In connection with severe central nervous system infections, such as brain abscesses, convulsive seizures occur in approximately one out of five patients. A patient with brain abscess may be nonfebrile and have normal values of inflammatory markers. The diagnosis is based on contrast-enhanced CT scanning or magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Even

Effects of sociodemographic factors on febrile convulsion prevalence.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to determine the lifetime risk (LTR) of febrile convulsion and the effects of socioeconomic factors affecting this risk among school children in Izmir province, Turkey. METHODS: Information was collected from school children aged 7-17 years in a school-based cross-sectional study. Stratified cluster sampling technique was used to define the study population, which represents the schools located in the metropolitan area of Izmir. Data were collected through a standard questionnaire from the parents. RESULTS: LTR was 9.7% (girls, 9.3%; boys, 10.1%,
