Focal transient lesions of the corpus callosum in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Focal lesions limited to the splenium of the corpus callosum are rare and little is known about their etiology. We describe three patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that presented transient lesions of the corpus callosum. We reviewed three patients with SLE whose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results revealed focal lesions in the splenum of corpus callosum. The medical records, including clinical, serological, and treatment features, were reviewed to determine the etiology of these lesions. Of 115 patients who had MRI for research purposes, three patients with focal nonhemorrh…

3D mapping of ventricular and corpus callosum abnormalities in HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: 40 million people worldwide are now infected with HIV/AIDS, an illness that often leads to rapidly progressing dementia and death. Even so, little is known about how AIDS affects the brain. Using computational anatomy techniques, we mapped how AIDS impacts the corpus callosum (CC) and ventricular system, two systems that show prominent changes on MRI. We (1) identified regions with greatest differences between AIDS patients and healthy controls and (2) correlated specific 3D patterns of structural differences with measures of immune system deterioration and cognitive decline. METHO…

Dysmorphology and microstructural degradation of the corpus callosum: Interaction of age and alcoholism.

Chronic alcohol abuse is a ubiquitous health and societal problem, with a growing prevalence in the older population. Alcoholism is a source of substantial deterioration in brain tissue and has been consistently observed in vivo and postmortem in white matter. To quantify the potential compounded effect of age and alcoholism, we used conventional structural MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine the macrostructural and microstructural integrity of the corpus callosum, one of the most prominent white matter structures of the brain, in 131 adults, age 27-75 years. Compared with the 74…

Corpus callosum atrophy is associated with gait disorders in patients with leukoaraiosis.

Cognitive impairment and gait disturbances are the most frequent clinical findings in patients with leukoaraiosis (LA). Corpus callosum (CC) atrophy has been associated with dementia in patients with LA, as well as with gait disturbances in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. We investigated, in patients with LA, the possible association between gait impairment and CC atrophy, taking into account cognitive deficits and the other brain lesions commonly present in these patients. Thirty patients (M:F=21:9; mean age 72.5+/-6.3 years) with gait disturbances and brain CT images consistent …

Bimanual coordination in alcohol-exposed children: role of the corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum (CC) is one of several brain structures affected in children prenatally exposed to alcohol. This structure plays a major role in coordinating motor activity from opposite sides of the body, and deficits in bimanual coordination have been documented in individuals with agenesis of or damage to the CC, particularly when the task is performed without visual feedback. The Bimanual Coordination Test was used to assess speed and accuracy on a task where both hands must coordinate to guide a cursor through angled pathways providing measures of interhemispheric interaction or the a…

The role of the corpus callosum in the coupling of bimanual isometric force pulses.

Two split-brain patients, a patient with callosal agenesis, and 6 age-matched control participants were tested on a bimanual force production task. The participants produced isometric responses with their index fingers, attempting to match the target force specified by a visual stimulus. On unimanual trials, the stimuli were presented in either the left or right visual field and the response was made with the ipsilateral hand. On bimanual trials, two stimuli were presented, one on each side, and the target forces could be either identical or different. Bimanual responses of the control subject

Prenatal disturbance alters the size of the corpus callosum in young monkeys.

Many factors during fetal life and early infancy have been found to affect the development of the brain. The following study investigated whether maternal stress during pregnancy would influence the size and shape of one sensitive brain region, the corpus callosum, in infant monkeys. For 30% of the gestation period, from Days 90 to 140 postconception, gravid females were disturbed using an acoustical startle protocol for 10 min per day. Magnetic resonance imaging was then employed to obtain sagittal and coronal scans of their infants' brains. Morphometric measures of the corpus callosum were c…

Axonal pathfinding mechanisms at the cortical midline and in the development of the corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum is a large fiber tract that connects neurons in the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is associated with a large number of human syndromes but little is known about why ACC occurs. In most cases of ACC, callosal axons are able to grow toward the midline but are unable to cross it, continuing to grow into large swirls of axons known as Probst bundles. This phenotype suggests that in some cases ACC may be due to defects in axonal guidance at the midline. General guidance mechanisms that influence the development of axons include chemoa…

Corpus callosum morphology of Williams syndrome: relation to genetics and behavior.

As the largest interhemispheric commissure in the brain, the corpus callosum is of particular interest in disorders that may preferentially affect white matter development such as Williams syndrome (WS). Individuals with WS possess a remarkable array of neurobehavioral peaks and valleys, including deficits in visuospatial ability, mathematics, and attention, but with relative preservation of language and affect. Our study measured the corpus callosum and its primary subdivisions using high-resolution MRI in 20 individuals with WS (13 females and seven males; mean age 28.5, SD 8.3 years; range …

[Encephalitis located at bilateral corpus callosum on MRI--a case report].

A case of viral encephalitis is described. A 38 year-old female was admitted because of high fever accompanied by cough and headaches. Two days after admission the patient began to exhibit abnormal behavior. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed pleocytosis. T2-weighted MRI revealed a high-intensity area located in the corpus callosum bilaterally that gradually increased in intensity within several days the patient's behavior returned to normal. The high-intensity area on MRI persisted for several months but diminished in intensity. Rubella may have been the etiology of the encephalitis.

Mutation of the Emx-1 homeobox gene disrupts the corpus callosum.

Expression of the Emx-1 homeobox gene is largely restricted to the developing and mature cerebral cortex. To study its function, two lines of mice were generated using gene targeting methods that have a deletion that includes the N-terminal coding region of Emx-1. Mice homozygous for the deletion were viable and fertile and exhibited no obvious behavioral defects. However, 100% of homozygous mice lack most or all of their corpus callosum, the principle fiber tract that connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres. Heterozygotes show partial penetrance for the corpus callosum abnormality. T…

Hypoplasia of the corpus callosum: a study of 445 consecutive MRI scans.

The size of the corpus callosum was assessed visually and by computer-assisted image analysis in a series of 445 consecutive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in children under 17 years of age. Fifty individuals were subjectively identified with small corpora callosa on visual inspection of the MRI scans. Seven patients had true hypoplasia of the corpus callosum after comparing the computer-measured relative size of the structure to previously established normal values. Five additional patients had complete agenesis, and two had partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. The cognitive funct…

CT appearances of haematomas in the corpus callosum in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Corpus callosum haematoma is a rare feature in subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), which may result from aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA) or pericallosal artery (PCA). In 348 patients with aneurysmal SAH, bleeding from ACoA aneurysms in 88 cases produced no abnormality on CT in 7. Blood in the cistern of the lamina terminalis was the most frequent abnormality (76/88); haematomas of the septum pellucidum, confined to patients with ACoA aneurysms, were seen in 26 (30%). Rupture of PCA aneurysms in 12 patients gave rise to blood in the pericallosal cistern, anterior interhemisphe…

[Lipoma of the corpus callosum. 3 case reports and review of the literature].

Lipoma of the corpus callosum is a rare congenital intracranial tumor. Although only 153 cases had been reported as of March 1992, the incidence of this tumor is underestimated (some cases are unpublished and others are asymptomatic). Three cases of lipoma of the corpus callosum diagnosed in children are reported herein. These tumors may be either discovered fortuitously in an asymptomatic patient or responsible for manifestations of which the most common are seizures, headache, and mental disorders. Diagnosis rests on imaging techniques. The main investigation is computed tomography which dis…

Somatosensory receptive field properties of corpus callosum fibres in the raccoon.

Anatomical studies in a number of species have shown that most areas of the somatosensory cortex are callosally interconnected. This is also … sing in the callosum. Axonal activity was recorded directly through tungsten microelectrodes in the corpus callosum of eight raccoons. Results indicated that somatosensory information is transmitted in its rostral portion. Most receptive fields concerned axial and proximal body regions and the head and face. Some receptive fields represented para-axial regions of …

Coherence patterns of the infant sleep EEG in absence of the corpus callosum.

The role of the corpus callosum in the relationship between the EEGs of the two cerebral hemispheres was studied by comparing 3 infants with congenital agenesis of the corpus callosum with a group of neurologically normal infants. Coherence functions were computed for symmetrical pairs of EEG derivations; in the frequency bands below 4 Hz they were in general much lower in the acallosal infants than in the normals.

Stereoperception in cats following section of the corpus callosum and/or the optic chiasma.

The spatial separation of the eyes in animals with overlapping visual fields means that parts of a three dimensional object project to slightly disparate retinal points in each eye. This disparity, once interpreted by the brain, is thought to be a sufficient condition for stereoperception. In the present experiment, stereopsis based on spatial disparity cues was evaluated in cats using Julesz random-dot stereograms before and after sections of the optic chiasm, the corpus callosum or both. Normal cats were able to solve the random-dot problem. Optic chiasm transection drastically diminished th…
