Serological cross-reactivity between spotted fever and typhus groups of rickettsia infection in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the frequency of cross-reactions to Rickettsia typhi in patients with Japanese spotted fever (JSF) and evaluated the differences between two rickettsiae using antibody endpoint titers. METHODS: Patients' immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG titers against Rickettsia japonica and Rickettsia typhi in two phases were measured using an indirect immunoperoxidase assay at two reference centers for rickettsiosis in Japan. Cross-reaction was defined as a higher titer against R. typhi in convalescent sera than in acute sera among patients fulfilling the criteria for JSF diagnosis. The

Antigenic relationship between the venom of the night adder Causus maculatus and venoms of other viperids.

Monovalent antivenoms were raised in mice against the venoms of Causus maculatus, Vipera ammodytes, Echis carinatus, Cerastes cerastes, Bitis arietans, Agkistrodon rhodostoma and Bothrops atrox. These antivenoms as well as four commercially available antivenoms were tested against the venoms of 15 viperid species by means of immunoelectrophoresis and/or ELISA. Cross-reactive protein bands were determined by immunoblot. ELISA cross-reactions of C. maculatus antivenom were low with all heterologous venoms. When investigating the other viperine antivenoms in ELISA stronger cross-reactions were ob

A systematic review: can one prescribe carbapenems to patients with IgE-mediated allergy to penicillins or cephalosporins?

BACKGROUND: Cross-reactivity between penicillins or cephalosporins and carbapenems is anticipated as all have a beta lactam ring. However, the true incidence of immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated cross-reactivity is not known. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to collect and combine all published data on children and adults reported to have a clinical history of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to a penicillin and/or cephalosporin who were subsequently given a carbapenem. Reactions were classified as proven, suspected, or possible IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated. RESULTS: Ten studies and

Immediate and Delayed Hypersensitivity Reactions to Corticosteroids: Evaluation and Management.

Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications used widely to treat allergic inflammation. Although the endocrine and gastrointestinal side effects of corticosteroids have been described, the occurrence of immediate hypersensitivity reactions and delayed contact dermatitis due to corticosteroids remains under-recognized. Hypersensitivity reactions can occur to a corticosteroid itself, or to the additives and vehicles in corticosteroid preparations. Skin testing and oral graded challenge can help confirm the suspected culprit agent in immediate hypersensitivity reactions and help identify an

Cross-reactivity induced by Anisakis simplex and Toxocara canis in mice.

The aim of this study was to verify whether cross-reactivity appeared between Toxocara canis and Anisakis simplex in an experimental rodent model. No cross-reactions were detected using sera from mice infected with T. canis eggs. When responses obtained against T. canis ES antigen using sera from BALB/c and C57BL/10 mice infected with T. canis eggs were compared with those obtained by testing sera from mice infected with one A. simplex L3, an increase in cross-reactions was observed using the C57BL/10 strain.

Legume Allergens Pea, Chickpea, Lentil, Lupine and Beyond.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: In the last decade, an increasing trend towards a supposedly healthier vegan diet could be observed. However, recently, more cases of allergic reactions to plants and plant-based products such as meat-substitution products, which are often prepared with legumes, were reported. Here, we provide the current knowledge on legume allergen sources and the respective single allergens. We answer the question of which legumes beside the well-known food allergen sources peanut and soybean should be considered for diagnostic and therapeutic measures. RECENT FINDINGS: These "non-pr

New concepts in the management of adverse drug reactions.

Our understanding of drug reactions and their management has changed markedly in recent years with the development of several new concepts. Epidermal cell death seen in Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) may result from Fas-Fas ligand-mediated apoptosis. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) contains anti-Fas antibodies that can abrogate apoptosis. Most studies on IVIG in SJS and TEN reported improvement in arresting disease progression and reduction in time to healing. Furthermore, several studies have dispelled the myth of sulfonamide cross-reactivity. Immune-med

Observations on the antigenicity and serological relationships of stocks of Trypanosoma congolense from East and West Africa.

Antigenic relationships of 4 stocks of Trypanosoma congolense from different parts of Africa were examined by immunofluorescence (IFAT) and neutralization tests. Antisera to each stock were obtained from rabbits infected with trypanosomes transmitted by Glossina morsitans. Trypanosomes for use as antigens were obtained from local skin reactions developing on rabbits infected with 2 of the stocks. Using the IFAT and antisera at end-point dilutions approximately 40% of the trypanosomes fluoresced strongly and a further 30% less intensely with homologous antisera, indicating antigenic heterogenei

Anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions to aspirin and other NSAIDs.

Aspirin and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions. Constitutively-expressed cyclooxygenase (COX-1) inhibition is likely to be responsible for the cross-reactions and side effects associated with these drugs, as well as the anaphylactoid reactions sometimes seen in aspirin-sensitive respiratory disease. Though anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions may be clinically indistinguishable, they involve different mechanisms. Anaphylactic reactions are due to immediate hypersensitivity involving cross-linking of drug-specific IgE. Regardless

Ant allergens and hypersensitivity reactions in response to ant stings.

Hypersensitivity reactions caused by ant stings are increasingly recognized as an important cause of death by anaphylaxis. Only some species of ants ( e.g. Solenopsis spp., Myrmecia spp., and Pachycondyla spp.) cause allergic reactions. Ant species are identified by evaluating the morphologic structures of worker ants or by molecular techniques. Ant venom contains substances, including acids and alkaloids, that cause toxic reactions, and those from Solenopsis invicta or the imported fire ant have been widely studied. Piperidine alkaloids and low protein contents can cause local reactions (ster

Cross-reactivity in cashew nut allergy.

BACKGROUND: Cashew nut allergy is increasing globally and may cause cross-allergic reactions to seed kernels from botanically related plants, including citrus. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her twenties with a known nut allergy developed anaphylaxis after consuming a sports drink containing citrus-derived pectin. Skin prick testing revealed reactions to the sports drink (6 mm), lemon seed (14 mm), citrus pectin (6 mm), cashew (16 mm) and pistachio (11 mm). Serum-specific IgE testing confirmed sensitisation to storage proteins in cashew and other nuts, including Ana o 3, Cor a 9, Cor a 14, Jug

[Novel foods-What must be considered?].

Novel foods are food products that were not in circulation for consumption to any significant extent in the European Union before 1997. The introduction of novel foods harbors the risk of allergic reactions to new allergens or new cross-reactions that need to be taken into account. The aim of the study is to highlight the allergenic potential of selected novel foods. Allergens in edible insects in particular harbor the risk of anaphylactic reactions. In western industrial nations cross-sensitivity to crustaceans and shellfish are likely to play an important role in the future. Chia seeds, whic

In vivo demonstration of immunologic cross-reactivity to octylisothiazolinone in patients primarily and strongly sensitized to methylisothiazolinone.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding that concomitant exposure to different isothiazolinone derivatives may result in concomitant sensitization, clinical and animal studies have suggested cross-reactivity between these derivatives, notably between methylisothiazolinone (MI) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT). OBJECTIVE: To investigate if patients sensitized to MI show cross-reactions to OIT and/or to benzisothiazolinone (BIT) by applying the concept of the re-test method. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From March to October 2019 consecutive patients were patch tested with MI 0.2% aqueous in duplicate at the two l

Allergenicity and cross-reactivity of coconut oil derivatives: A double-blind randomized controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Counseling of patients with cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) allergy is difficult because the cross-reactivity of CAPB with other coconut-derived surfactants, coconut oil, and coconut fatty acids is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To provide pilot data regarding the cross-reactivity and allergenicity of surfactants derived from coconut oil. METHODS: A randomized double-blind controlled pilot study of 10 control patients and 12 patients previously found to be allergic to CAPB. Eleven coconut-derived surfactants, as well as coconut oil and lauric acid, were applied in random order accordi

Evaluation of contact allergy to chemicals using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) technique.

Skin blood flow in allergic contact reactions and cross-sensitivity were evaluated using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) to study the dose-response relationships in phases of induction and challenge in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were sensitized with different doses of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB) and challenged with different doses of DNCB and 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonic sodium salt (DNBS). The skin reactions were evaluated by LDF and visual reading score. The results indicated that there were dose-response relationships between the doses of DNCB and LDF measurements in both phases of induct

Assessing the safety of increased outpatient cephalosporin use following the modification of penicillin allergy cross-reactivity alerts.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about penicillin-cephalosporin cross-reactivity have historically led to conservative prescribing and avoidance of cephalosporins in patients with penicillin allergy labels, potentially causing suboptimal outcomes. Recent evidence suggests a lower risk of cross-reactivity, prompting a reassessment of alert systems. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of limited penicillin cross-reactivity alerts on outpatient cephalosporin use and the incidence of adverse reactions in a healthcare setting. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared cephalosporin prescribing and advers
